At least you tried them, Lisa. They ARE widening - which works fine for some, but not for others. Onto the next pair of culottes that make your heart completely happy. xo

Oh thanks for the review. I think there will be more culottotes to come as they seem to be appearing all over the internet. Or maybe that is wishful thinking!

Thanks for the review! Sorry they didn't work out. Flowy seems to be a key element to look for, at least for me. I have a hard time with skirts and pants that are less drapey or thicker fabrics, too.

Too bad we couldn't have seen these on you! I am admiring culottes (well, maybe not these!) from afar -- I don't think they are for me. Look forward to seeing you in some others. Next time, try then on and take a photo!!!

lisap, thank you for this review. I love the look of the CM culottes but they were a bit spendy for me when I'm just experimenting with the silhouette. I agree, now, the AT cropped pants aren't culottes and I wasn't sure of the fabric but after your review I think the AT fabric may be more drapey and therefore easier for me to wear.

Oh....so sad. But I am grateful for this review. It is really helpful to hear about how they work in person. The closet Club Monaco is hundreds of kilometres away from me so it is either online ordering or trying on in my city visits, which can be quite rushed.

I'd love a pair of culottes but it sounds like these won't be the ones.

Sorry all, for the confusion. I understand the difference between cropped pants and culottes, and was not going for a cropped pant look with the CM pair. They are culottes and were reviewed as such. Still did not find them at all flattering, and was disappointed as I quite love Club Monaco and have a lot of their pieces.

Yes, Kerry's AT pair are indeed a cropped pant. I quite like those, but they are a different animal.

Perhaps you are looking for a more tailored wide leg pant that is cropped. I went to the other thread after reading your post and the AT pants didn't look full enough for culottes. I think the trick with this style is to get a fabric that drapes beautifully so that the fullness hangs down creating soft vertical lines instead of bagging out and adding volume.

Marley - I don't know either. Maybe you're right - the AT ones are actually cropped pants and the CM ones are true culottes? But the CM ones were in no way drapy or soft enough to pass as a skirt. If they did, it would be a big bulky skirt Either way, it was enough to clarify what I wanted - and the slimmer leg is for me. Maybe a jersey or wool crepe or something drapey would be nice in that leg width. Still on the lookout !

That is a shame, but at least it has helped you decide what will work for you. I am contemplating a pair for the NZ summer.
I tend to find trousers/shorts/jeans are try on in the store items for me as the chance of them being wrong is quite high!

Lisap - do you think the AT ones look like culottes? I looked at the pic and didn't think so - my idea of culottes is that they have wider legs all the way down - and actually give the appearance of a skirt. Or, are there varying leg widths for culottes?

Picked these up in black yesterday without trying them on - so typical and what I swore I would stop doing, could have saved myself a trip back .

The pros:

beautiful wool twill, slouchy fit, lower waist, trouser style waistband w no loops, button back welt pockets; lots of length for taller women; front slash pockets

The cons:

single pleat front (although in the right fabric, I like this design feature, like in a cool wool for example) which didn't work with this relatively heavy weight wool, IMO

leg width starts from the top of the pleat and from the highest roundest part of your bum and stays very, very wide down the length of the pant

I can't even post a picture here, because after giving them two chances today trying them on at different times with two different tops, they are back in the bag and ready to return.

Angie suggested I try for a "just flattering enough" look with these, but I can't even get past "not flattering at all". They are hip widening in the elliptical sense and just too wide through the leg. I am simply not confident enough to try a just flattering enough look with a $200 pair of pants that I may or may not wear again next fall.

All this is ok though - I now know what I am looking for in a culotte: clean front, straighter leg, lighter weight cool wool, lining optional.

Who will these work for? I'm not even sure. It's a lot of bulk that wasn't flowy and drapey. And trust me: they are 10 times wider through the leg than the picture would lead to you believe. I had to check twice to make sure it was even the same pant!
