Okay, so I am thinking I will ask my hairdresser just to trim the bangs and start working toward more of a side-swept look. If I have time I will try to go in for a real haircut before baby arrives, and if that doesn't pan out, I am sure I can manage to do it at least before Christmas. Also, thanks for all the bangs-love. I have a slight insecurity about them since it's not really something I discuss, except for one time when my mother and my friend were together trying to convince me to grow them out. Also a little girl did too when I once had a really bad haircut :)

Thanks so much for all your thoughts. It was really helpful in sorting this out.

ETA:
Shiny -
It seems like all the new moms I know cut their hair shoulder length, or if it was short already than a different short cut. I wonder if it's because of the grabbing issue or just emotional? I did read that after three months or so my hair will probably start massively falling out due to hormonal fluctuations. Man. The things we do.

Hi, I think that your hairstyle looks fairly low maintenance and the fringe looks like it is growing out nicely. You could grow it out and if you fancy having a fringe for a night out, you can get clip-in fringes now. I think Kim Kardashian had one in recently and it looked very natural.

If you choose to grow them, you will need to pass through a side-swept phase anyway, so you might as well try it! I think it would look great on you.

It's nice to get them trimmed as you transition to side swept so that the stylist can angle and texturize them to help them take that shape.

You look fantastic. You could go a bit longer for the side swept but you mentioned you can achieve the current look with very little work. With the new baby you might end up having to pin your hair back if you are growing out the bangs. Just a thought from my over practical side. Have a great time at the baby shower!

I think you'd look gorgeous either way. In terms of a baby being on the way... I personally find bangs a bit of a bother. After the first couple of weeks, they start to go wayward and by six weeks a trim is needed. I think with a baby in tow, it is easier to have all long hair that can be pulled/pinned back (or, of course, to go short) and if you can't be bothered with things like trims, it doesn't matter.

You look great either way, and I am jealous of anyone who looks good in bangs, so my knee-jerk reaction is to tell you to keep them.

However, if there's ever a convenient time to grow your bangs out, it's now! Because with a baby in the house you can get away with pulling your hair back in a hairband or barrettes and looking a little unkempt. People will understand if you haven't had a chance to get to the hairdresser. And you do have quite a bit of volume so I do not think your bang-free hair will be straight.

Be aware that once you give birth your hair has a tendency to shed and thin, as hormones adjust. So growing bangs out may be good strategy as it will give you illusion of more hair.

Finally, I just wanted to say that I chopped my hair into a pixie sometime after my first was born. Because she kept grabbing my hair and pulling on it, and that drove me nuts! And I do not really like how my hair looks in a ponytail.

RRae, as I recall that day was very windy and I didn't have a lot of time that morning to get ready. I think the wind is making it look "styled". My routine is usually to do a simple blow dry on the first day (mostly head upside down and then touching up the parts around my face and the cowlick I tend to get in back), and then I do minor touch-ups to control cow-licks on the second and third day before washing again. If I air-dry I find it looks okay the first day (and pretty wavy) but not as good after that.

Well you look awesome without bangs too! So at least you can't go wrong!

Is your hair naturally like that in the photo or does it take a lot of styling? I agree with you on point number 2, at least bangs add a bit of style when you don't have time. I put my hair in a ponytail a lot and my face looks better with some bangs around it, then all of it slicked back.

Well, it took some searching but I found a semi-bangs-free photo (below).

I really appreciate all the wise thoughts here. Two things are making a lot of sense to me:
1. that at least with this hair I know how to style it efficiently, and
2. even if I don't really have time to do much, at least the bangs inherently make it look a bit more of a style

Zapotee, I like that idea--it's kind of a middle ground, the more side-swept and blended look.

In the mean time, my hairdresser said I could stop by first thing Saturday morning to trim my bangs before the party. I got my eyebrows done today, so that when they are once again visible, they are in good shape. So I will keep thinking on it.

By the way, Runner Rae, I am also always thinking I will grow my bangs out, but just never quite manage. My mother hates them :o) And I'll confess, she is coming for Christmas, so I thought I might throw her a bone on that one.

I would ask the hairdresser to cut layers in between the fringe and the rest of your hair. See link below:

I think the bangs look really lovely on you and chances are good that with the new little one, you may find yourself growing the bangs out unintentionally over the next few months. Sticking with what you know and is working for you for now may make things easier in the short term and you can reassess at any time after the baby comes. I personally spent a great deal of time in a ponytail (happy to get a shower) for the first little while after each of my kids came home form the hospital...and your bangs would add a definite allure to that look..

I am up in the air on this. I also have sun damage where my bangs lie. I am growing mine out this summer (it's not easy!). I noticed on most every pic in the latests mags that even those with bangs had them long and sideswept and I felt like changing it up a little. The old saying that if your hair is the same as in high school . . . blah, blah, blah. I don't know if now is the best time for you with the baby coming and all, though. Growing out bangs is a pain and you'll find your hands always at your hair. With baby 'stuff' I'll bet hands aren't always clean to be going into your hair??

Keep the bangs. You are familiar with them right now and familiar (like the Fast Fallback Outfit) is going to be verrrrry helpful in the near future...LOL

You would look great either way, but I'd wait until things have settled down with the bambino to do anything really new. Remember too that your hormones may act pretty wild for the first few weeks (or months) so don't make a lot of drastic changes for a little while...

ETA: Also, you may grow your bangs out whether you plan to or not, just depends on how busy your new little one is! LOL There may be no time for trims!

I always say I'm going to grow mine, and every time I get to the hair dresser , I end up cutting them again. That's because I look better with bangs!

I love your inspiration picture, but the thing is, unless you have bouncy hair or a lot of time each day, it's probably not going to have that overall look. My hair would be flat and straight everyday. I'm too lazy to do it, and right now with a 4 month old I don't have time!

Do you have any photos of yourself without bangs? If you do, take a look at them and try to really decide what looks better, and I'd say stick to that. If you don't want your forehead to show, or to have to apply a lot of makeup to it each day, then I would suggest to stick with the bangs.

For what it's worth, I think the bangs look great on you! You could show us a bang-less photo too if you have it.

I think keeping the bangs is a great idea, they will instantly add style if you have a day where you only find the time to pull the hair back. the only additional consideration I can offer, will you have easy access to a babysitter in order to get your fringe trimmed once the baby arrives?

My baby shower is this weekend, which I only just found out this week! My friends are so chaotic they invited everyone but never confirmed with me!

Anyway, I want to look nice and take the last chance of sorts to get myself in order before newborn chaos begins. So, I need to make a quick decision about my hair. My bangs/fringe is/are really long right now. Should I go for a trim and keep my current style or grow them out a la inspiration photo. Or is there something else I should be considering?

The biggest reason I have bangs is that my forehead is probably the single worst-aged part of me. I played a lot of outdoor sports when I was younger, the sunscreen sweat off, and my forehead is really sun-damaged, essentially. I feel this ages me, but now that I am actually getting older, I feel less vain about it, so I am considering baring the forehead. My hairline is fine--I don't need the bangs.

By the way, I don't find my bangs a lot of work--I just wet it and blow dry every morning--takes only a minute, so I am not worried about the upkeep. They also don't look horrible if I don't do that, just better if I do. (My hair isn't the kind that goes in crazy directions when I wake up in the morning.)

Finally, I know I haven't been on the forum much this week--there are a lot of last minute things for me to take care of right now, but I would really appreciate your advice.

1. me today
2. I LOVE the hair on this blogger
