There's nothing wrong with it and I get the need to balance priorities.

But I'm in the PNW too, and oh-so-very tired of my black rain (and lately wool) coats by April -- and you know we're often dealing with downpours in June!

I had an 2nd raincoat in aqua for a while (shorter and I kept getting soaked thighs, blergh) and now have a driftwood one.

I really enjoy having the non-black coat when the days are longer and I am wearing lighter colors and color-colors -- and especially when I'm still wearing dark neutral clothes. Helps me feel more seasonal.

Good luck!

I only wear trenches during Spring and Fall since they are quite light (my understanding of a trench, anyways). I've never liked black trenches -and I love black outerwear. Just, idk, spring requires some springy colors. I'd vote RED in a hartbeat, or green, or cream, or beige, or blue, or orange, or purple, yellow, mustard...

I think a black trench is fine in the spring, but I crave a bit of color this time of year too.

The Jolt jacket is cute and quite cropped! I tried it and even in a large (which was too big in the body), it was quite short on me, and I have a relatively short torso. But you are petite, Brenda, right? So it may work well on you. The dark red color is really nice.

I love colored trenches! That being said, I would still wear a black one in spring (if I had one). I am not a fan of beige trenches with my skin tone, and lots of other skin tones (too soul-sucking).

Banana Republic had a bright pink one in the store really recently (a couple of weeks ago)...I can't find it on their website anymore but you might check your local BR if you like pink. I thought it was FAB but couldn't afford it. That GAP one is nice too.

Yeah, tomato red isn't my color. But the red one at the Gap would work fine I think. And it comes in petite... a must. I'm not necessarily in a hurry and was planning on waiting until next year to get a colored one. Then I saw the Gap one...

Thanks for all of your thoughts! I'm open to more.

I have two black trench coats, and I got tired of the black...ended up buying a magenta-ish spring trench at Marshalls on a whim while on vacation last month.

I love the colour! The weird thing is that I am still wearing dark jeans and maybe a dark sweater, plus dark coloured booties...and the magenta/orchid-like trench is *amazing*.

Let me go and look up the Jolt jacket, as I'm not familiar with it. Meanwhile, I don't think there's anything wrong with a black trench in the spring :)

ETA: I looked up the red Jolt jacket on the Nordstrom site, and while I love the colour and style of it, if I had to choose between a coloured trench and a coloured denim jacket, I would personally go for the coloured trench. I only say this because I am not convinced I'd get as much use out of a red denim jacket compared to a vibrant, coloured trench coat. A trench coat can be dressed up or down, and can be worn in more situations, whereas the denim jacket in the red colour seems more casual to me. I also think I would have a harder time coming up with outfits to wear with the red denim, whereas with a trench, I can just throw it on over top of whatever I'm wearing (for the most part) and it doesn't have to "go" with the rest of my outift as much as a short coloured denim jacket might. Just my own rationalization here about what I would choose. That said - I really like that red denim jacket too, it's just that I'd go for the coloured trench if it came down to a choice between the two.

I also vote for a black one in the Spring. I do think that a nice color is a great addition. Since you have some time, because you already own the black, are you in a rush ? Have you found the perfect color one...or do you feel that another is missing ?

I say that if you can go without one and a few more months allows you to save for something a bit more special that you love, then wait.

I agree that a black trench will work fine for Spring. I would just add white or color with the outfit beneath or a scarf or bag or shoes. It would be lovely of course to have a couple of colorful toppers but I have so many other things I need to purchase that I don't think a colorful coat may be in my future for awhile.

I think you can definitely wear a black trench in spring. A bright coloured outfit with an open black trench would still be 'springy,' it might just be a bit less casual than the outfit would be with a lighter trench.

I live in the PNW and have wet weather for 6-8 months out of the year. I definitely want a colored trench sometime. I'm just not sure if I should jump at one now or wait until next year. Prioritizing this is hard for me because I can use both jackets and outerwear a lot for most of the year.

Well if you already have a perfectly good trench, why not try the Jolt jacket for a change. It all depends on where you live and how much use you'll get out of a second trench. Do you have a nice long spring? lf so it's worth having a couple of choices for a coat.

I think black is fine for spring - I suspect people gravitate to the brighter colours because we're tired of the dark, heavy clothing of winter. But black is classic - and you can always brighten up the overall look with a spring scarf or bright bag with the trench. I say if the fit and quality of your black one is great, then stick with it.

I have a black trench coat that I love. Is wearing a black trench in the spring ok? I ordered the Jolt red denim jacket, but I'm unsure how much use I will get out of it. I'm tempted to get the red Gap trench coat instead. But if a black trench is fine for most of the year round, I might wait and try to get a colored trench next year and find ways to wear the jacket assuming it fits well. I'm waiting for the sized-down jacket to arrive so I can try it.

The point is, I can only get either the Jolt jacket or the red trench.... not both. Any thoughts?
