Have you looked online? If you search for sarong on amazon.com a wide variety of prices, colors and materials show up. I personally like the big bright colored ones that can be tied a variety of ways.

I saw some reasonably priced and colorful ones (black and white comes to mind right now) at Old Navy here in Ontario, so maybe give them a try.

Unfortunately I don't have Target or Land's End access as I'm in Canada. I did try Zellers, which is basically Canadian Target, but all I found were tunic-style cover-ups.

@Bianca: Yes! I'm open to other alternatives, but I really would like other alternatives IN ADDITION to a sarong. xD I think it would look really cute with a new swimsuit I just bought. Also I quite like the versatility of it.

@Diana: LOL, I actually am Indian and really should try the Indian shops! My one worry is that the fabric won't be right-- for some reason I keep imagining I'll just keep running into pashminas and shawls at the Indian stores. I think this is compounded by the fact that I live in a place that basically gets about a month of warm(-ish) weather and then its back to the snow!

@Lynne: I am using the word cover-up loosely. xD I don't need it to be like super-functional at actually covering me up that much. The one way I'm imagining it most is just simply tied around my waist. I actually wouldn't mind if it was a bit sheer for effect (just a bit!).

@Queen Mum: Oh Target. I will totally hit you up when I get to the States. xD

@Angie: I haven't, but I'm going to work today and there's a Forever 21 in that mall. I will definitely be looking for one.

I saw some pretty sarongs at Target the other day. Have you looked there?

50 seems excessive. I love sarongs and own several :). If you're just using as a cover up, a scarf is fine. Is white going to cover you up as much as you need? Next time you're on hols near a beach, choose one in a nice colour.....a full size is great for a skirt, dress, beach pillow, pram cover.....did I mention I love sarongs :).

I think a plain scarf would be fine, so long as it is big enough! And Bianca's suggestion for a little sundress is good too - it's one of the few times I feel comfortable wearing those super short sundresses they sell at places like Forever 21!

Otherwise, if you have an Indian (or Tibetan - for some reason, there are like 4 or 5 tibetan stores near me...) store nearby they tend to have lots of pretty, well-priced big scarves and wraps.

I say use a scarf! Sometimes those stands at the mall sell them, or the accessory department. I really haven't seen sarongs lately. Have you looked at other alternatives? I got a large tunic from old navy a while back. Also little sundress cover up s work nicely. Target has some cute ones. You can always try lands end....

I'm looking for a sarong, but I've only seen one so far that fits my needs (plain white) and its like $50. I'm not sure I'm OK spending that much money on a rectangle of fabric.

Do you guys think I could just use a huge cotton scarf? I'm basically gonna use it as a cover-up. Or any recommendations for where to get one? It's for my LA trip, so specific LA suggestions would be great too.
