I just saw you got a thrifted cropped jacket already! Strong work! You're a fashion superhero, filling wardrobe holes at the speed of light!

And MaryK, is it funny/scary that I recognized you from behind in that pic even before you said it was you? I think I may be spending too much time on here...

I like mine cropped pretty short, as well. I like it short enough to look intentional, especially since I'm short waisted.

ETA: another pic, this one with a dressy skirt

I know my denim jackets are a little on the long side! I'll have to see what shortening them would cost.

I would use those jackets for pants and look for a more cropped one for skirts and dresses.

American Eagle and GAP have a couple ones at the moment. I think you should aim for a closer fit as well. I think Angie's jacket might barely close or be snug if buttoned up. I love that type of fit in a jean jacket and I would wear the snug / cropped jackets with pants as well. Perhaps Angie could confirm this.

Shannon, I never picked up on the fact that your denim jackets are a bit long for skirts/dresses until you asked! I agree with Rae, that you should hold out for a thrifted cropped jacket. Altering the ones you have would get wonky with the pockets and button rivets, I would think. You might have better luck with a juniors cut, as they tend to be more fitted in the sleeves (and better possibility of being cropped), and you probably would never need to actually button it if it's a little narrow in the torso.

I tend to agree with you Rae - if it were just a straight chopping off of the hem, it would be inexpensive, But taking off a couple of inches and reattaching the band is costlier, plus looking at where the pockets are placed - I think they would look in the wrong spot on a shorter jacket. I'll check out my thrift stores and see what's around.

But it's good to know the ones I have are too long for skirts/dresses - I always kind of wondered and now I have confirmation!

Shannon, I think you can thrift a cropped denim jacket for cheap if you can hold out a bit - cheaper than alteration, probably. I find them often and now have way too many. They also have a bunch of options at Forever 21 ATM. I could always keep an eye out for a $1 one at the swap meets, too (unless you think shipping would cost more than alterations as well).

So you can shorten a denim jacket! Yay! I have a nice Eddie Bauer denim jacket that is so soft and comfortable but the length is too long. It might be worth taking it to my tailor to get it shortened and fitted because the fabric is so nice.

You are definitely in the market for a more cropped denim jacket, Shannon! Keep the band at the bottom of the denim jackets, but check the price of the alteration (shorten but reattach the band).

Based on your visuals Angie (thank you), I think both of mine are too long. The darker one is a looser very light denim and less fitted, and the faded one is more fitted (actually really like the fit of it) but is also too long I fear. Would it be worth taking the bottom 2-inch wide hem off the faded one and having it re-hemmed?

I think it depends on your proportions and the cut of the pieces you are layering over. For me, top of the hip bone is usually a good length but I also wear more cropped styles and longer jackets if they are fitted.
