I first thought it was a synthetic when I took it out of its wrapping. It's 100% cotton, but I've never touched "cotton velvet" before. You're right that I'm probably comparing it to silk-velvet.

I think it feels like that because it's made from cotton. Silk and rayon velvets are definitely lush. I used to wear all iterations of velvet back in my goth days.

I'm not an expert on the difference between velvet and velveteen, but from the things I'm reading on the internet, I'd call it velveteen. However, if Boden mentioned that it was made from cotton on their product page, I imagine you might have a difficult time making a case that they misrepresented the product. It wouldn't hurt to try, though.

This info was interesting to me:

That is true. I will think about it. I guess it's the Romantic in me that's hoping for some luxe velvet. I should talk to a customer service rep and see what they say. I'd like to get return shipping paid for if it's not exactly what they claim it is....wish me luck there.

Mochi, if you aren't excited by the feel of the fabric, then return it. The jacket has to make YOU happy and feel good. If you're feeling let down by it now, then that's a sad thing Remember, you're supposed to enjoy your clothes!

Well, whatever you call it, it's a pretty coat. I have a shorter jacket made from that same fabric (mine's blue). I can tell you that I love my short coat made with this fabric, feel that it's nicely made and get a lot of wear out of it.

It's true...it has a shorter pile than what I would associate with classic velvet. It also doesn't have a sheen. Velvet made from silk would be more shiny than velvet made from cotton.

Yeah, I do like it. It would feel like lack of truth in advertising if it weren't technically velvet, but I guess I should get over it.

"greater body" is kind of fancy speak for less drapey. Again, velveteen is just what I'd guess from the online photos and your description. It's still a really cute purple coat!

Wiki says:

"Compared to true velvet, velveteen has greater body, does not drape as easily, and has less sheen"

Sigh. If I DO return it, I'm going to make Customer Service pay for shipping. That would not be fair! (Boden doesn't do free returns. Or free any shipping at all.)

I'm not sure what "greater body" refers to.

Sure! Tomorrow in better morning light I'll take pics. I have another K/R from the same order. I'm fairly strong on the side of K for both but of course open to opinions. It's not going to affect the drape, either, I would think. It's just that since I was little, I've always loved the FEEL of velvet, and the way it would change colors depending on which way you rubbed it...maybe I was a weird kid!

That was a dumb title for the post, but I had no other way of posing it as a question! Maybe it's simply an observation.

This order from Boden just came in:

http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/.....vGroupID=2

In the same purple, in fact. The cut and fit are good. The only disappointment I'm feeling (very slightly) is with the feel of the fabric. It's velvet, and 100% cotton (I am a natural-fiber snob), but it doesn't have that rich feel I associate with velvet. On thinking about it, I'm considering that it maybe just doesn't have that long pile that velvet typically has, but I've never come across an example of velvet that felt like this. It really shouldn't be an issue; I just am a very tactile person (even though I'll never feel this against my skin). I guess I'll keep it anyway since it seems to be well-made and was a good buy. Glad it was half-price, though!
