If you are going to countries like Belgium and Holland, consider the likelihood of rain during your time there. I travel often to the UK and find that my down filled outer garments don't do well when they get wet. Look for down alternatives instead. My friend has a coat in the S & K brand in taupe. She finds the colour doesn't get grubby.

The bust area runs small, I think. The coat lining is a gorgeous lime green that I love. Good luck on your coat adventure.

Thank you, my friends are the additional information and, Angie, Those extra links are really helpful to see the color quality and style which looks really nice. I’m really loving the olive green with the plaid hood and the navy one, too. Thank you, Zaeobi, and that seasonal market sounds lovely, food, shopping seeing the sights, nothing better. Joy, thank you for the sizing details although I wasn’t quite sure on the bust area.

I don’t think we’re going to be in very cold weather, although it will likely feel cold to me, and we were thinking of Belgium and The Netherlands.

No help with puffer jacket sizing sorry, since I'm in the same boat as you (living in a subtropical climate will do that to you lol), but I can recommend the German Christmas Market in Birmingham (UK)'s city centre, for great food (& warm drinks!) plus everything else you can think of for gifting to others (clothes/ gifts etc).

Vicki, I'm hooked on my Save the Duck puffer! Best puffer I have ever had. I can't rave enough about this style of puffer and the GENIUS zipper. It's streamlined and shaped, very warm, weather resistant, and lightweight. The infinity zipper zips as high up as you want it to, so you can create excellent insulation, especially when wearing the hood.I wear it with a matching scarf and beanie and feel pulled together. It's perfectly machine-washable too.

I don't know of you will be going a VERY cold place - then the S&K is better.

Thank you, Angie, Suz and LJP! I especially like your suggestion of Save the Duck, for all the reasons you mentioned. I have never heard of this company before. I DO want something lightweight, a brand that is kind to all living things and has non-constricting armholes (that can be so annoying to me).

You’ve opened my eyes up to color, too. Off I go to take a few more virtual jaunts and, Angie, I’ll post my travel question elsewhere and I appreciate the suggestion.

I’ve had a couple of their coats over the years and agree that their fit block is slim and with a tight high armhole . I size up for my larger chest .

Vicki, how exciting that you might get a chance to travel to a colder climate over the holidays.

I don't own a Soia and Kyo coat at the moment but based on try-ons I would say they fit quite slim as a rule and work well for a smaller frame (at least in the styles I'm most familiar with) and some people would need to size up for shoulders or hips or bust. But not everyone. It also depends how much (and what) you intend to layer under the coat. If you are between sizes on their charts, I would tend to go with the larger size. If you are not on the edge of their sizing, then probably your normal size.

In terms of colour, I'd go with one you love if you can find it. Black is not just classic -- it is also ubiquitous, which for those of us who live in cold climates can become a dreary sight both on the street and on our own bodies, but which those who only wear one of these jackets on a trip might prefer.

Also, consider how heavy a coat you need. There are different weights of down and this makes a huge difference to warmth. If animal welfare is a concern, check to see that the coat is made from responsibly sourced down. You can also find coats that are not down-filled that work, as well -- check out Save the Duck if this is a concern for you. Note that synthetic fillers also come with environmental costs, so there are no easy answers here.

(I do still wear down myself but understand and respect the concerns).

Vicki, if you need a narrow fit - the brand runs TTS.

I got both my S&K coats in my usual size, and can adequately layer under them. I am narrow shouldered and a regular size bust.

If you are broad in the shoulders, larger in the bust, or like room on the midsection - size up.

As for colours, I have had cream and now have navy. (I don't wear black). But I wear my citron Save the Duck puffer SO MUCH MORE! I prefer that it isn't down too. My down navy S&K is very heavy duty and only for snow and below freezing temperatures. The citron is lighter weight.

FUN TRIP PLANS! May I suggest you ask the question about markets in a separate thread so that it isn't overlooked ;)

To anyone who has buying experience with the Soia & Kyo winter coats and jackets, can you tell me if the brand is TTS or should I size up? In researching, I’ve seen both comments on sizing. I’m looking at the Karelle jacket and am not sure which size to buy. Being in Southern California I don’t have a lot of experience buying outerwear and I may have a chance to travel with a friend to a colder climate. Here are two photos, one of the style I’m interested in and another one that came up. While I’m posting I’d like to also ask if you have any color recommendations for these types of coats. I’m leaning toward black because it’s classic but that is hard to find in my size at the moment. I’m not sure about the lighter colors I’m seeing, like Fawn or Taupe, because it seems like they would get dirty and they may not work with my lighter coloring. Also, OT, if you live abroad, I would love to know if you are familiar with any holiday markets that would be a fun destination. Thank you for any input you can offer.
