If you're shortwaisted, empire tops are made for you. But if you have a large chest it might be a problem because the seam will cut across your chest rather than falling underneath, where it should go. It sounds hit or miss. You'll have to see what works.

Avoid gathered seams. I don't even know why these exist. They don't flatter anyone and make most women of all sizes look pregnant. I cannot understand why manufacturers continue to create these monstrosities rather than just leaving them flat. I think this is what you meant by "babydoll top." Frankly I think they look horrid on everyone.

Look into the brand Sweet Pea. It has the empire waist style down flat (pun intended). Most of their clothes are tops but they do have some dresses.

Esprit also has cute empire waist dresses.

BTW your body type sounds spookily like mine. I too am 5'2, size 2-4, with a 31" inseam and short waist. However, I am not athletic in the least.

Hi,

I like the emire waist dresses that are being shown as of late...on the hanger that is. I just wondered if some body types are not able to wear the empire waist look as easily?

I tried on a ton of different empire waist or waistless dresses and they did nothing for me. Some of them looked really cute and summery. Whenever I looked in the mirror, I thought it was a pretty dress, but just not on me.

I also noticed the sizing was off for me. I was trying on the juniors' sizes and the bust didn't fit at all, even in the size large. Hmm...never had that happen.

I'm about 5'2, 115 pounds, usually a size 2 or 4 in misses...I'm athletic (muscular) but also curvy (hourglass), but very short-waisted (not a lot of torso, but have a long inseam and a lot of leg for my height...31 inch inseam).

I wonder if it's just the baby doll type of size that doesn't work for me? I found a cute Max Studio knit empire dress that was more fitted on the rib cage area that looked great on me.

I am not too upset that I won't be in fashion, but just wondered if anyone else has had challenges with the empire waist dresses that are currently in style?

Thanks in advance!
