Yes, cut that thread. However, I usually leave the pockets on my blazers stitched closed, so I don't put stuff, or my hands, in them, stretching them out.

That stitching is called "tack stitching" and is used to hold pieces of cloth together during construction and shipping. Think of it as being in the same category as a brand label on a jacket sleeve, or a closed buttonhole or pocket which is intended to be functional.

If you want to keep a vent or pocket closed to overcome fitting issues in RTW, there are better, or at least less visible, techniques a tailor can use to fix the problem. Leaving a big tailoring tack in the back of your coat or jacket could leave you open to some snarky comments...

You're supposed to cut the thread. It's just to keep the garment tidy until you get it home.

Cut it. It's meant to prevent the vents from getting snagged or creased funny while in the store, but the jacket won't hang right until you cut them open.

I always cut that. I figured it was to help the jacket lie flat and not get snagged/ripped during transport or in the retail environment, much like the loose stitching that holds pockets closed on jackets or coats (that have real pockets). I suppose if it didn't show and the jacket was oversized or something so that area would never flex I might leave it closed, but otherwise I cut.

I am fairly certain they should be opened, but I can't tell why I think this way. I guess I always thought the stitching was temporary too keep the garment neat while in the store.

You know how they're stitched together very loosely when new? Are you supposed to leave that stitching intact, or rip it? If it's a preference, which do you do? Thanks.
