Your example helps a lot. I think most thin knits, jersey and so on, will usually look too delicate and clingy for sweater or ribbed tights. Something crisper--wool gabardine or even denim (for a skirt, say, which can be structured)--would work well, I think, and not just chunky or wintry fabrics.

Firecracker - I making a note of the slip tip especially. And knit hats too, Aida. Ya, I think bringing in other heavier textures is important. Just looks funny otherwise.

I wear sweater tights a lot, like more than any other type. I do not limit to just sweater dresses, but do as Angie said and mix up good winter textures in there. I'll mix mine with lighter fabrications too, but only if I can ALSO bring in heavier ones (e.g. silky shorts but with boots and a fuzzy jacket). You can also wear with a skirt and then do a sweater on top. Knit hats also work well here

I like your tights with the boots! and I think the dress would work if you winterized it with a leather jacket.
I have tights like yours (cables and all!), and I've worn them with a black cowl-neck dress in a t-shirt fabric, and boots. Worn with a slip, the textures don't grab each other, and I thought the look was fine, even though the dress isn't that heavy. I like mixing textures in one color.

How about a leather skirt with either s blouse and blazer or a cashmere sweater. No sweater tights required in GA...the whole state just shuts down when it freezes.

Hmm. Angie confirms the suspicions. Textured fabrics. I need to remember the phrase.

I guess this begs the question, how can I winterize my pull-on dresses. Maybe I just need to wear two pairs of tights.

Even though I have a zillion sweaters, I'm not seeing anything that looks right to me. I don't know. I'll have to play around. My cardi's tend to be thin. My crewneck jumpers - well, 'nuff said, awful preppy. My heavier sweaters long, patterned coat thingies.

It's actually a little too hot for a turtleneck or something underneath on top, because of the unremovable factor. I have one cropped cotton turtleneck that's about the right shape - but it's orange. Bright orange.

I don't have many short jackets and they tend to be thin (and/or rather fancy blazers) or also would make for a weird fabric combination. I think I need to look at my wardrobe again for combinations. I really like these sleeveless, jersey dresses for *at home*, but the bare knee thing in winter won't do.

I think mixed textures would be fine, although I'd probably go for something a bit heavier just because if I want to wear sweater tights I am probably cold. A knit, wool, something felt-like, denim, tweed, etc. would probably all go well for me.

I would have worn my grey knit dress with sweater tights yesterday, if I'd had them.

Rachy - that looks somewhat like the texture of my tights and dress from yesterday. My dress is long sleeved and has a collar, so maybe the bareness on top of your dress is what is throwing it off. Do you have a short jacket or medium weight cardigan that would work over this?

I have just added sweater tights this fall and have yet to wear them.
Not planning to have to use with sweater fabrics only, but I do plan to "evaluate" the weight of the skirt or dress, color, wintry-ness of the outfit and so on.

I can see sweater tights looking great with a flirty skirt if worn with a boxy knit sweater on top, for example. Something that makes it all fit together and not look like I'm out in my woolen underwear and party dress by mistake.
And since my tights have texture and pattern, I think they look better if not fighting with too much other texture or pattern, but I think that's case-by-case.

I actually wore them with my DVF wrap dress yesterday, which is not a super heavy material and not textured at all (woven silk). I wore tall boots, so the tights were mostly covered. I was very happy with how they looked together.

I have sweater tights but don't own any sweater dresses (just purged my only winter dress as I never wear it). I usually throw a long tank or summer dress over and then pop a cardi or sweater on and I'm toasty.

I think it might look good with a cropped sweater (or hi-lo) if you are playing with proportions, or a big scarf as you suggested.

Usually I'd wear a heavier dress on top. But sometimes I layer a light/medium weight dress + sweater tights with a turtleneck sweater underneath, or a thicker knit cardi on top. It's a work-around for our short summer season and I get to wear my summer items a few more times.

I like sweater tights. I have not found a texture to add to my collection. The pair I do have are a beautiful deep burgundy and are really war, (felt lined). I use them to add color to a neutral outfit. I don't think it's necessary to wear sweater tights with a sweater dress. I like the mix of textures/styles with more refined pieces, all-season wool, crepe silk/satin etc.. I could also get into a more rustic look by combining them with a woven wool, denim, or tweed skirt /dress

Yes, if it's cold enough to wear them I don't want to wear something lightweight on top either. I find my wool skirts and a chunkier knit sweater work just fine, it doesn't have to be a sweater dress.
