The slouchies now ARE somewhat different. I'm just saying I think that they will eventually become unfashionable again once they filter down to the masses, since it IS a style that has to be done "right" in order to look good. I guess the same could be said for most styles, but (at least to me) slouchies can look very bad if done wrong. That being said, Angie's "slouchy" pics (posted on a different thread) are done quite well, and I have seen some members here do them "right" as well. I really have yet to see many people wearing them in real life. (The one person I have seen wearing them IRL is my young, cute coworker, who is like 24 and very slim, and pairs them with same-color wedges and a fitted, tucked in top, which combats the shortening effect these pants can have.)

I think the lower rise makes today's pants different. DD has thrifted some Mom jeans and she can pull off anything, but I will not touch them with a ten-foot pole! Angie is right as usual. It's the new take on old styles that makes them look fresh. I need to tattoo that on my forehead.

Rae's description of mom jeans is right on, and that is different from the new trousers by a mile.

I want the rise of mom jeans to come back. LOL! I'm so tired of having mid-rise jeans only come up to 2.5-3 inches *below* my belly button, making me constantly feel like my pants are coming down, no matter how tight I get them!

What Rae and Debs said by a billion percent.

Shoppingisfun (and AJ), fashion that is repeated is 99% improved and modernized from the last time it was on trend. There is always at least a subtle but huge difference in styling and fabrication. That's why the thrifted versions can look stale and dated, but the modern versions look fresh and new and on trend. They ARE different.

Almost any old look will come back "in" eventually. Chances are, if it wasn't flattering the first time, it will not be flattering this time. I am no fan of slouchy pants in general, but I do believe they can either be done the "right" way or the "wrong" way. If slouchies become mainstream, we will begin to see them--instead of being styled cutely, the way some of the members here wear them--be worn too big, too small, too short, too long, and with running shoes. It is then that they will once again become Mom Jeans.

Rae, I totally understand what you are saying and agree 100% There is something about "mom jeans" that looks almost like a mistake, not intentional like this new slouchy silhouette.

I'm more concerned about the return of mom jean proportions via the high-waisted styles I'm seeing. Lower rises were a revelation to this short-torsoed gal! I hope a variety of rises will continue to be available!

IMO Mom Jeans were not slouchy on top and also were not quite as tapered as today's super-stretch jeans. From what I remember, Mom Jeans combined a high rise, worn high on the waist with the crotch point in place, with possible pleats poofing out in the front, a tight butt with another too-high rise, and a tapered but not skinny leg. For instance, I can't imagine tucking MJs into tall boots. MJs also had no drape - if there was slouch, it was unintentional from ill fit or bagging out.

To my eye, today's slouchy pants are meant to sit on the hip with the crotch dropped, and the legs taper more dramatically to more of a skinny-leg fit (some start near the knee, some just down at the ankle), drape/slouch in the legs/hips, and intentional butt/thigh surrender.

Eh, now reading that back it sounds complicated... did any of that make sense, lol?

Maybe having them slung around the hips with a dropped crotch point will distinguish them?

Since pants seem to be headed in the slouchy on top and tapered towards the ankle silhouette, won't that just mean we will have "mom jeans/pants" again?
