I finally have time to check in with this thread again and am impressed with the collective wisdom here!
As some of you point out, changing handbags is a great opportunity to sort clutter.
And it seems small, organized pouches and duplicate items are the way to go.
Thanks again to all who weighed in!

Ha, in Halifax you need an umbrella AND sunglasses. In the same day. Or same hour...

Great thread, I haven't figured this out either. Would love to carry a smaller bag, and switch them more frequently - mine accumulates so much CRAP if I don't! But I always find myslef without something I need, if I try to cut back.

I hardly keep anything in my bag, and swap my bags all the time.

I carry:

wallet

small umbrella (6 months of the year)

I change my bag frequently but don't carry that much stuff: keys, wallet, sunglasses, reading glasses, phone, epipen, lipstick, emory board, nail clipper, pens, and rarely my checkbook. If I'm traveling I change to a small zippered pouch, eliminating all but drivers license, credit card, ATM card and some cash.

One more tip!

I have an app on my phone called keyring. it stores pictures of all my loyalty and discount cards. Eliminating more than a dozen cards helped me to move to a smaller wallet.

I use an organizer like Deb illustrated to move items between briefcase and various totes. It works great and I love the organizational aspect of it.

For especially important items, such as wallet and prescriptions, I use a tiny pouch that can be moved between various totes and purses. This strategy becomes especially important on weekends and when I am going to the gym.

Joy, I really like your solution of multiple wallets for different purposes. I had sort of half hit on that with the wristlet thing but wasn't doing it consciously or consistently. I think it's a great tip -- thank you!

I do the same as Deb--I use a purse organizer (one I made). That way I don't forget anything. If I'm switching to a small crossbody (for lots of walking, for example), I just transfer wallet, keys, lipstick.

To add to all the great info you already have, I have 3 billfolds and take the one(s) I will need that day.

1. a very small billfold that fits in a pocket or clutch with some bills and change, a Visa card, drivers license, medical cards.

2. a long narrow billfold with Cosco card, Nordstoms, and a couple more credit cards and some gift cards for places I am most likely to stop (coffee shop, etc.) I take #1 also. The two plus phone, sunglasses, keys fit in a larger clutch.

3. a larger shopping billfold with more credit cards, loyalty cards, gift cards. I can carry more cash in it. If I take this billfold, I take #1 too. Carrying this one means using a satchel bag or larger.

I have all bags ready to go with a comb, packet of tissues, pen and tiny breath freshener sheets; adding a protein bar. I rarely carry makeup or grooming things except a comb.

Having the three wallets or even two has really simplified changing purses for me.

Oh, and windchime, I am a big fan of bags that are not so compartmentalized. I'd rather have fewer compartments and more open space -- that way I can easily fit something larger, like a bottle of water or my iPad -- in some of my larger bags.

Thanks, everyone; this is really helpful! Instead of looking for a bag with multiple compartments for organizing (I do hate digging through my purse searching for something), I am going to think in terms of organizing my items into separate little pouches and tossing the pouches into my handbag. It also makes lots of sense to have duplicates of some items such as chapstick and pens, in each bag.
SHINY--your organization station sounds lovely. I love figuring out ways to make antiques work for 21st-century life.

I had been using a similar organizer to what Deb posted, but it didn't work for all my bags, especially clutches. I am loving Janet's system and now want a pouch for incidentals! Though it would still probably not solve the clutch situation.

I loved the oversized clutch trend because oversized clutch can fit my wallet, there's no need to take out DL & CC & cash because that's all the clutch can fit.

Mostly -- I have come to see the swap time as good -- & necessary! -- time to clean out the trash that has accumulated in my bag.

Essentials:
- foldable comb/brush
- lipstick
- chapstick
- phone
- wallet
- kleenex
- glasses

Keys: I don't keep those in my bag. I toss them into a bowl in the front hallway as soon as I walk in the door. I often toss my sunglasses in there as well, I just don't do that in summer because I don't want my DD's walking off with my sunglasses, but having a bowl or shelf or "place" near the front door is a good way to corral stuff you need to remember the next day - regardless of what bag you decide to carry. Just stuff the stuff in the bag on the way out. My "place" near the front door also includes hats, scarves, gloves, umbrellas -- grab and go.

This place is a dresser - 1920s dining room server with drawers and cubbies. In the drawers we stash all post-office items (envelopes, stamps, pens, pencils, strapping tape), change for parking meters, bus tokens, and yes, checkbook too. There are two cubbies, one houses DH's scarves, hats, gloves, etc.. the other stashes mine. It's kind of kindergarten but it works.

I've only started regularly changing bags in the last year or so. I keep a fairly small number of items that are must-haves in a large clutch on the shelf of my entryway closet. If I'm using a tote (which doubles as a carry-all for kids' stuff too) then I'll pop the clutch in to keep my stuff separate and easy to locate. I also have a smaller wallet option which is more like a card case for times when I want to carry a small cross-body bag or clutch and not have to deal with my bigger wallet. I find I'll use the same bag for a few days, so I keep it in the front closet, but when I switch out it goes back to my bedroom closet. That way my stuff is either in one of two places--"home base" in the big clutch in the closet or in the bag I'm currently carrying, also stored in that closet while I'm at home.

I don't keep anything in mine, but use both an organizer and/or multiple pouches to contain items. The latter I learned from DH, whose man bag is the most organized of any I've seen! I love little mesh zipper pouches you can find in office supply areas of stores for my bag. I use an opaque one for my unmentionables

Like the others, I have downsized what I carry. I bought a new wallet and a very small make up bag. Those two items, plus a folding hair brush, pen, readers, phone and keys are all I carry on a regular basis. I might have one or two clutches for which I can't fit all those things so I leave out the readers since I keep a pair at the office.

For a few of the things you mentioned- I have the tiny pack of breath strips in my make up bag and regular mints, Kleenex, and hand sanitizer at the office and in my car. Photos are on my phone. I use a debit card instead of checks so no need to carry a checkbook.

I am transitioning from being a one or two bag per season woman to someone who has a bit more variety in her bags.

So far, I'm doing what Janet does, combined with what Lyn does. I keep a pen and a bit of kleenex in every bag all the time. I put my lipstick, etc. in a little pouch. And my items to transfer look similar to Janet's: small pouch, wallet, specs, phone, keys. Some of my smaller bags don't like my large wallet -- in that case I have a little wristlet like Lyn's that I use instead.

That's true unless I am going on a trip and carrying a big tote -- then I'll have computer, books, kindle, etc. in addition. But that's a different situation.

I keep it simple. I streamlined how much I carry in my bags after my physical therapist gave me a talking to early last year about carrying too much weight on my shoulders. (I also try to not carry bags on my shoulder so much now, too, so clutches are good for me).

What you see in the picture is what gets shifted from one bag to the next. Wallet, business card case, eyeglass case, keys, phone, and pouch with incidentals (lipstick, aspirin, comb, etc.). It takes me maybe a minute to change out purses.

My mum bought me something similar to what Deb uses, it's brilliant. Sometimes I wanted to change my bag but it was too much work...now I just pop into the new bag and go

I only have a few things; wristlet doubles as my wallet and I keep this separate from my purse. All of my purses have an iPhone charger in them, as well as some pens, a lip balm.

I don't really need anything else, aside from my work keys and ID which I keep on a peg by the wall next to the wristlet. I can just grab keys + wristlet to go with any bag.

I have just a few things in my handbag: my wallet, a small notebook, my phone, and a small zippered pouch that has all the small bits and pieces in it (mints, comb, lipstick, nail file, etc.). That small make-up bag is key for me, because it contains all the clutter in one place.

Some of you have awesome collections of handbags and frequently change them out to coordinate with your outfits.
So far, I've pretty much used one bag during winter and a different one in warm weather. Both my bags have several interior compartments which I like to keep organized, and I usually need 10 to 15 minutes for the twice-annual handbag change.
I carry the following in my bag: lip gloss, nail file, comb, breath mints, hand sanitizer, kleenex, two pairs of reading glasses (one for print and one for music), cash (bills), change purse, pouch for drivers license, credit cards, library card, bus pass, etc., checkbook, pens and pencils, photos of DS and DH, and keys.
I've been thinking about adding another handbag or two but would need to streamline my handbag changing process.
My question for you frequent bag changers is: do you have any tips for efficiently switching from one bag to another?
