Have worn thongs for years to avoid VPL, carrying my weight in my rear. Never heard of Hanky Pankys - going to look up based on all the recommendations above!! I mainly wear GapBody, and I size up for comfort. I also tried Spanx thongs recently - they're ok, too. Barely notice.
I never, ever wear thongs to bed. Cannot stand them at night. Sleep in shorts.

Interesting to read the comments from my fellow big butt buddies regarding boyshorts becoming thongs, lol. I have the same issue but, instead of thongs, I went in completely the opposite direction with slip shorts!

I've personally found my holy grail in the Uniqlo body shorts - they're fitted like shapewear but don't have an uncomfortable tummy control panel. They also come with a cotton gusset, to avoid the yeast infections & hygiene issues that others have mentioned. I know it's technically not the topic of your post, but I find it to be a more comfortable solution to VPL!

Oh and just for the record I don't find "thongs" (g string) comfortable so I don't wear them

I sometimes wear thongs, and I look for a thong with a wide rise (the fabric that goes up the back) and and also have wide enough fabric on the sides (like 1.5-2" wide) so that the thong stays put and doesn't wiggle into places I don't want it to be in.

Another vote for the Soma's Vanishing Edge undies. I could never get comfortable in thongs but love the Somas. I have mostly the high cut briefs. There is never a VPL. For a year or so I got by with 3 pair of Somas by hand washing and hanging them up each night. I could have probably managed with one pair. They ususally dry overnight.

I wear thongs when i have a tricky outfit don't want to worry about VPLs. I honestly don't really like underwear in general (hopefully that doesn't make me a weirdo on here.) but since it's still something we have to wear i just try to pick up the softest fabrics i can find. Then when i wear a thong i don't even feel it.

I am a true-blue Hanky Panky thong fan. In fact, I get excited when the new colors come out each season - and save my pennies so that I can have one in each color. I have never felt any discomfort in them - ever - and I can't imagine wearing anything else but Hanky Pankys! (Nordstroms Rack usually has them for about $5. less than at Nordstroms.)

I bat for Team Thong! My mother and teenaged daughter both gang up on me about the butt floss, but I have to have them!

If they're not for you, they're not for you. But they're definitely for me! I'm with Lisa, in that my behind is quite round and the boy shorts just don't stay put. With that much fabric migrating to where it should not be there is WAY more of a wedgie problem than with thongs. My heavens! And given the round butt issue, my VPLs are very in-your-face if I don't have the right underwear on.

I agree with the posts here that some styles are uncomfortable, but most are fine for me. I'm sure it was rough at first, but now it's been so long that I don't remember ever not wearing them (except as a child, I guess). I love the indulgent brands, silk and lace as much as any gal, but for everyday I buy cute cotton ones super cheap at Target.

April--- I already posted my exact solution to the cotton invisible undies problem on this thread--- Natori bliss girl shorts--- the lace edges instead of seams eliminate VPL. They are a hipster--- so more like a low rise brief in the cut-- bootay coverage, but no extra fabric to fight with the thighs.

Thank you goldenpig for asking and all the ladies who responded. I am one of the team that doesn't wear thongs. I tried a pair once and hated the feeling that my underwear were creaped up all the time. I was in stiches reading the review of the c-string.

I was on an underwear hunt for a while last year. For my pear shape, the rump is too big and boyshorts do not stay put on me. Even the Shimera one's which I believe Angie likes, they are super soft but do not stay.

For more coverage days I have fallen in love with Felina, and own the Felina 'Sublime' and Felina 'Aubrie' Bikini styles. They are super soft and have a cotton liner. I do not like non cotton liners in underwear.

For less coverage days, I find the less material the better. Also the amount of elastic makes a difference. I prefer Felina 'Lush Lace G' Thong and Felina 'Sublime' Thong.

I don't like any synthetic underwear (bras are an exception) so all those "invisible" and "vanishing" styles are out. I don't mind a thong sometimes, but the ones that don't show above your waistband are often so tiny that they're uncomfortable.

I got a couple pairs of the Commando brand cotton "boyshorts" but I don't love them, for a couple of reasons. One, they are cut more like a panty than a boyshort. I thought the whole point of boyshorts was that they come down slightly onto your leg, eliminating the line produced when a panty edge cuts across the fullest part of your bottom. These do not do that. Two, the sizing seems awfully small. I'm a small person with narrow hips, and the S/M size is plenty snug. I think a M/L would be too wide, so I can't really size up for better coverage.

If anyone has a recommendation for good, invisible, cotton underwear -- boyshort or thong -- please post! My favorite Barely There cotton boyshort has been discontinued and I'm desperate to find a replacement before my current pairs fall apart.

I didn't know the difference between a thong and a g string (we call them all g strings in Australia) so I googled it...Bwahahahaha!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T.....nd_variety

Then I found out about C strings.

This journalist road tested it: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/fem.....tring.html

This Indian website says it's the most preferred by women:

http://reviews.in.88db.com/ind.....d-by-women

The last line say "It's also funky" :D

BTW I do wear G strings quite a bit as they ride up much less than normal undies!

There must be some other better way to avoid VPL. I would try some different styles and cuts and see what works for you. I tried nordie's shimera boyshorts, and though I don't LOVE them on me, they definitely do the no VPL job. I also like some of the victoria's secret cotton undies, there are a few different cuts that are pretty good.

I've had to wear them a few times, and the only things that kind of work for me are: 1) only wear G-strings. The smaller amount of fabric does make a difference (for me); 2) sleep in them the night before you have to wear them, and your butt will get more used to the wedgy feeling than otherwise.

But I haven't worn any in ages now since I found several comfier pairs of undies that don't give me VPL.

I didn't start wearing thongs until I was in my 40's or so. I have gotten used to them, and brands do make a difference. I can't find a pair of boyshorts that I like, but I do own a few pairs because I wear them with skirts. I like them better for coverage when wearing skirts for some reason.

Funny story about wearing thongs. The other day I noticed (while in the bathroom) that my old jeans had given out in the rear, along the pocket line. The only problem with thongs was that they didn't offer any extra "coverage" in this time of need! LOL Thankfully I work at home with little toddlers so I ran upstairs and changed my pants, and went about my day. But it did get me thinking about checking my rear side before I go out in public...LOL

GP - too funny! Yet we all know exactly what you're talking about :-\

Occasionally I try to get used to thongs, but always give up and go back to my Jockey hi-rise (or something like that).

But expat Tish Jett on her blog ( http://www.unefemme.net/ ) commented on French women and their commitment to thongs:

"OK, as you know by now I swim and do aqua gym classes several times a week. In my classes there are women ranging in age from their early 20s to one who is 80 plus -- she's remarkable and has been exercising all her life. Because I'm surrounded by women who tend to be "comfortable in their skin," as one says in French, I see them in their underwear on a regular basis.

And this is what surprises me: No matter what their age, the majority are wearing thong undies. Magazines constantly warn against "unsightly panty lines" and clearly this advice is being taken very, very seriously."

So, maybe there is some reason to persevere??

I'm a retro boy shorts gal.

Never wear thongs.

Although I pop my clients into hanky pankys - if they want to wear thongs.

I've tried thongs a couple of times over the years, and you can count me among those who hate them. I also dislike boyshorts -- I think they look awful on my thick-thighed body. I don't wear too many outfits where VPL is a big concern, so I stick with bikini styles.

They say boyshorts only work on butts of a certain shape. I've also had good boyshorts and bad ones -- the bad ones definitely end up all bunched in your crack, where they're ten times worse than a bad thong.

I have not gotten used to them. I only wear them when desperate, or else I just try to buy stuff that doesn't let the underclothes show through. OR, I'll wear my spanx. I also hate boyshorts, they end up wedgified on me no matter what.
