I think, as Sarah mentioned, that it has to look intentional. For me, this means, not too much of a length difference between the front (tucked) and back (untucked) parts of the top, and I always wear a belt to finish off the look. It's easiest with low rise pants IMO.

I don't do the half-tuck thing (with a button-down shirt, where you tuck one side of the front but not the other) because it always looks contrived to me.
I do a semi tuck. I just jam in half of my shirt and walk out Easy style.

I don't semi tuck either - it's just not my look. I feel unpolished, and polish is important to me. I FULL tuck, or FAUX tuck my tops. You need a welted top to faux tuck.

It's very possible that your shirt length is putting you off at the moment. So as a stepping stone to the look - try the semi-tuck with shorter shirts. But really, very fashionable and stylish people are semi-tucking gigantic shirts and it works.
Thank you. I'm thinking perhaps I'm using shirts that are too long. I will play with length and see if I have better results. I appreciate your advice.

I dont know if I am an expert, but I always try to get a nice drape from the center of the tuck over to the hip to make everything look intentional. There is a window of shirt length that will drape well semitucked, too short or too long is hard to have it look right. Id recommend practicing with different lengths of your shirts until you get a look you like then observe the hem length on the shirt. Also, drapy-er fabrics seem to be easier to work with than stiffer cottons, although they can work too... just can be harder to get just so.

I am perplexed by the semi- tuck. Whenever I attempt it it looks as if I was in a rush and forgot the rest or accidentally got some fabric stuck in the waistband. What is the key to getting it right?
