Fab - thanks ladies! I'll try it with pins first (great idea Jem) and then if it works, can sew the placket closed by hand myself.

I agree with leaving some at the top and bottom open. It's pretty easy to hand sew a button placket closed on the inside. I've done it several times and it works well to avoid gaping.

I was going to suggest the same with Jenny. I would probably try it first with safety pins to close the middle sections (hidden from the back, of course) first, to see if that works. If it did, I'd probably just leave them. It would be easy to sew part of it closed, though.

I agree that it makes most sense to sew closed what isn't needed for on/off... If some fun tional area needs additional closures I would probably choose little wire clasps like they put at the top of zippers instead of snaps since I think these take the potential sitting strain better (but I am not an expert here either)

I was going to suggest the same thing. Figure out how many need to be functional to get it on and off and have it sew shut from there to the last button. It is a cute skirt but I know what you mean about button front skirts. When you sit, they can pull in an unflattering way.

That's a great idea JennyAnne - thank you!
I also thought about just adding a couple of hidden snaps between the buttons that make me nervous - what do you think?

It would be simple to sew the front closed but I think adding a back zipper could be quite costly. Have you considered having it sewn closed in the middle area, leaving the oppening at the bottom open and the top part that you need to unbutton to get it on/off. Then you wouldn't worry about gaping around the hip area.

I thrifted this denim skirt a while back and love it. I've worn it once to work for Denim Days and would like to get a lot of use out of it as it fits perfectly.

My question is how difficult would it be, or is it even possible, for my seamstress to sew the front seam closed so that the buttons become merely decorative, and instead put in a zipper in the centre back? The buttons don't gape but I worry they will and so then fuss with them throughout the day. This would eliminate my concern.

Photos of the front and back of the skirt are attached.
