I am not a wear counter. Did it for a couple of weeks, confirmed that I rewear my clothes a lot and rely on a small clothes acquisition amount to keep up my wear numbers.

HOWEVER, one thing I have noticed on vacation / holiday time is that I am wearing my casual or lounge clothes for much longer than just a couple of hours a day that I would wear usually, and I find I need to wash them more often and can feel like I am running out of clothes if I don't keep laundry going.

Bit of a tangent there...

I use stylebook, so my pieces within outfits are counted rather than just pieces. So if I wore the same jeans, but changed my top, that is two outfits, so the jeans would be counted twice. I have no problem with this, because if I changed my whole outfit, for a different situation, and my jeans pulled their weight in both situations, then why not give them double credit? If I'd changed my pants two things would have been credited for the two situations. Plus, it's easier :).

The only way to give them single credit is to create an outfit with both tops in it, which imho isn't that useful.

Re the cardigan, I'd probably include it in the outfit, because it was part of the outfit, it worked with the pieces, and I like to record that for the future. I guess it depends a bit why I didn't wear it.

Back to add - totally agree with Sterling. Having statistics of what I buy, wear and create outfits with gives me so much insight about me and what to do in the future so my wardrobe and choices would be more effective. And have prevented some very expensive purchases which wouldn’t have gotten enough wears to justify them.

Like many of the commenters I too count an item which is part of two or more outfits for the day as one wear. It’s actually automatically counted by the Stylebook that way. If I had brought a jacket or cardigan which I didn’t use at the end - it’s not counted. I remove it from the outfit. My reasoning is that looking at past worn outfits I want to be able to see what I actually used, not what I thought I would need. These are two different things and often I think I would need more but the tracking shows the opposite. So it’s helpful for me to have past history of what got actually worn and use it when planning my future trips and daily outfits more realistically.
Another reason for counting that way - wear count is related to the physical life of an item. And this parameter is not affected by the number of outfits created with it but by the days in which it gets worn. So it makes sense to me to count how many days I’ve worn something. Knowing in how many outfits an item is part of is also counted by the app but I use that info much less. There are items which participate in less outfits but I wear all the time and have wear count between 40-100. And there are other stuff which I have created many fab outfits with but have worn only a couple of times.

Lucy, in your example I don’t count the cardigan or jacket I took just in case, unless I actually put it on.
I’m sure either method could be justified.

Lucy, I would count it because you bring it on the assumption that you might need it. It was part of your outfit.

I do what others do -- even if the wear is only for an hour or two, I would count it. But I generally count it as a single wear if I continue in the same piece all day while changing up some of the other elements. As others have said -- depends on your goals for tracking.

I agree with most - I count everything I wear in a day and night, but if I keep on the same jeans, I count them only once.

The one thing I’ve never fully decided on is jackets . I live in a hot climate but often carry a cardigan or jacket as aircon can be frigid . If I carry the jacket but don’t wear it, do I count it ?!? What do others do ?

Yes. My reasoning is that both outfits for the day fulfilled their goal, so they were both "worth" a wear. For instance, if I spent the day in jeans and a t-shirt because I was working at home, but then I went out for a nice dinner, I can't be expected to wear the same thing! A going-out capsule is important, even though not worn as much. So definitely count each as a wear.

Carla, I don't count wears all the time. But in connection with travel wardrobes I sometimes do--both when planning and when noting what I actually wore. If I wear 2 or 3 different outfits the same day, each of the items in each outfit will be counted as 1 wear. If an item is worn for 2 or 3 different occasions the same day, it will be counted as 2 or 3 wears.

Yes. I count the item worn if I put it on. It does not matter if I only wore it for a couple of hours for dinner or all day for work. It got worn. That means it was needed in my wardrobe.

Counting is liberating. You won't believe how much information you will learn about yourself.

I see, Sarah. No, I would only count the jeans once in your example, not twice, but I agree with you we are looking for different things out of doing it. I am so frustrated with my stuff taking too long to hit 30, and can only assume I have too much of it, which I am working on reducing over time.

Oh yeah, no half wears! Agree with that!

I'd count the jeans twice simply bc it's easier for me to do so. I have an Excel spreadsheet with a column for each outfit component (bottom, top, topper, etc) and do a sort alphabetically by column in order to count up the wears for each item.

Ymmv if your system is different e.g. Jenni's tick marks. For me part of the usefulness of tracking wears (which I've done intermittently but am currently trying to pick up again) is documenting outfits/combinations so I can remember to re-wear them. So the spreadsheet works best for me.

@SarahD8 - in the example you give, I would allocate 1 wear for each top, and 1 wear for the jeans. Today I am wearing jeans and mariner, but changing into crops and a sweater - so 4 different garments, 1 wear each.

(I didn’t know if I should be allocating .5 wear for something that isn’t worn all day, but that doesn’t seem fair or right.)

I think it depends on what your goal is with tracking.

Not sure I'm reading your post right, but do you mean that if you are wearing, say, a pair of jeans and a casual top during the day and then swap out the top for something sparkly for bridge, while wearing the same jeans, you would count the jeans as having been worn once?

That makes sense (you only actually put them on your body once) but they were part of two distinct outfits. If you counted the jeans twice you might get a better picture of which items in your wardrobe pull double (or triple) duty. But again, it all depends on what your goals are.

For fun (!)
