Mander, I have been wondering if there is a dry shampoo that's dark instead of white for dark haired lasses! There must be, right? I don't brush my hair, so to get the powder out I have to try to shake it out of my hair which is kind of a pain and doesn't always work well. Dry shampoo does give decent volume, but the white drives me crazy because it just turns my hair ashy colored. For me it only works at the front and top though, nothing seems to unflatten my giant back-of-the-head cowlick once I've slept

Naturally curly person here. If you have a high-maintenance cut, you may have to spritz-wet it in the morning, and re-style it with a quick blast of the hairdryer. I'd use a curl-or-wave defining gel (just a touch) to set it. The key is the cut. When I have a good non-short-layered cut - and a precisely-done cut - I find the style holds until the next shampoo!

Scarlet, I just use a normal thick elastic band for the "pineapple", although if you want a scrunchie I've seen plenty of them in places frequented by teenagers (Claire's, etc.). I think I got the term from Lorraine Massey's "Curly Girl" stuff.

Aida, you should try dry shampoo for the volume issue! It might be a bit more of a pain to brush it out in your dark hair, but it is quite effective as a volumizer. You could try a homemade version with corn starch as an experiment to see if it works for you. I wonder if cocoa powder would work for someone with dark hair? *pondering*

I see, I must combine water and leave-in conditioner. I think I just find it tough with curly/wavy hair that the result is so unpredictable and weather-dependent.

On the other hand, since my hair is more wavy than curly, maybe it would be smart to touch it up with a curling iron, a la christyg. That had not yet occurred to me as a way to deal with the waves turning into wildly pointing curves.

AJ--more convincing me I need a cute hat like yours :)

Mander--I recall the “pineapple method” used to work really well for me as a teenager, now that you mention it (although I hadn’t heard the term before). I wonder where I could find a scrunchie these days, as that was my instrument of choice.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. They were interesting and helpful to read. I guess no kind of hair is really easy

We have super hard water too, it's not great My hair is very thin and very fine (boo), so by the second day I have lost ALL of the volume... from the ears up, where I want it. I only wash my hair twice as week-ish, and it's quite long right now.

On fresh wash day, I use Bumble & Bumble’s curl creme for fine hair which is the only curl creme I've found that's light enough for my thin/fine curls while they're as long as they are now (when short I can use a denser creme). Use a good dollop when wet and focus on the ends, scrunch and let air dry. Easy peasy!

But on the second day, I have to do a lot more work. I use a small amount of the creme and blend with water and gently work into the bottom half of my hair and use the excess along the top and inside near the scalp. More scunching, lots of it. I also have to tease the hair up at the back of my head because I have a head-sized cowlick back there -_-

On the third day+, I usually also have to use some dry shampoo along the scalp if I plan to wear my hair down so I start with that then do the curl creme only on the bottom half of my hair (and even more crown teasing). But usually I put it up by this day, either in a pony tail, a fanned bun, or half-up. My curls tend to behave themselves well enough with the curl creme, but nearly all of the work involved is me trying to get the volume back. If my hair was thicker it wouldn't be a problem.

I do what several others do: on the second or third day, I lightly wet my hair (stand in front of the sink wetting my hands and rubbing them into the top layers of my hair) then re-scrunch it. Sometimes I will add a teeny bit more leave-in conditioner, but usually the water is enough. In the summer, or when I am working at home and don't really care, I will just pull it back into a bun or ponytail on that 3rd or 4th day.

My scalp tends to get greasy and feels icky, so I usually clean my hair every day. However, I have had some luck with the "pineapple" method (putting your hair in a loose ponytail or bun on top of your head at night) for preserving waves, although my hair is pretty long so this is easy for me. Sometimes I try pin curls or braids overnight but these tend to give me strange kinks and frizz -- even on dry hair!

If I do go for a second day I mist my hair with water, sometimes with various experimental additions (a little salt, leave-in conditioner) and scrunch it up. Recently I have discovered dry shampoo which helps with the greasiness and also adds volume at the roots.

I wash my hair twice a week and in between use a straightening iron on the bangs and ends. If I leave my hair wavy I still prefer the bangs to be reasonably straight so I refresh with a leave-in conditioner spray and blow-drying.
My hair is ALWAYS frizzy to some degree, especially in damp weather!

My washing/conditioning routine is similar to Mo's, then on day 3, I often just wash with water (I usually use baking soda instead of shampoo, and follow with a vinegar rinse). If it's looking greasy by day 3, a vinegar rinse instead of just water sometimes --- though more often AJ's tricks of pulling back and/or flipping come in handy (I tend to pull up or back half the time most days anyway).

I have learned to accept a little bit of messy on the second day. If I can't wash my hair on the third day, then I clip the sides back or wear it in a side ponytail or part to the side and put on a hat. If I need to take the hat off, then I flip hair to the other side. (Smoother and some volume.)

I admit to being really lazy with my hair in general. I will blow dry the bangs off to the side and that's basically it. I let it air dry 90% of the time. I never blow it all the way straight, but will sometimes half way dry it to speed up leaving the house without having a sopping wet shirt from it dripping down my back. Day 2 I put it up in a bun in the shower and just wash the bangs and hairline. I either brush or comb it to sort of distribute the water further down the hairshaft, dry the bangs at least half way, and go. It goes more wavy on day 2, as opposed to curlier on day 1. I use CurlySexyHair detangler and leave in conditioner on day 1 and I guess it gets slightly re-wetted and reactivated day 2 with my comb through.

I fight my hair daily! When I flat iron it, I'm usually good for that day and the next without having to do too much touch-up the 2nd day (although I usually do have to run the flat iron through it again briefly the 2nd day). When I wear it curly, I have to style it each day. If I let it dry naturally, I still need to use a curling iron on the top layer because my hair is half curly, half straight. I might be able to get away with not getting it wet the second day, but I usually have to do some work with the curling iron again for it to look halfway decent.

I have to wash and restyle my hair every day. That's true even when I blow dry it because I get bed head with my short hair (not the sexy awesome kind). But even when it was long, I had to restyle my hair every morning (it took forever), which is partly why I ended up cutting it off.

I spritz with water from a small spray bottle to dampen it, then scrunch it a little and let it air dry. That normally perks up the loose curls. If I want to add volume, I then hairspray it from underneath. I don't use hairspray until it's dry or nearly dry, however, or else the curls will be crunchy.

So there is something I just don't get. A major reason I blow dry my hair straight-ish is because then it looks pretty decent for two or three days, whereas when I let it air dry (go wavy/curly) it looks good the first day and then looks progressively more and more appalling. If you wear your natural hair texture how do you "refresh" the next morning? Wetting my hair in the shower is out--the super hard water here just turns it weird and it takes hours to dry by itself.
