I agree Elly; and so does Kelly's stylist. That's why she is giving Kelly the longer of the two styles first. If any problems crop up like you mentioned, the second cut may require a re-think.

I wouldn't count on her hair staying stick straight-- my whole life I had hair like the model in the picture. However, in about 2 years I've developed a tiny bit of wave that wasn't apparent until I cut my long straight hair. At shoulder length it falls straight, shorter than that and layers don't want to lay right unless they work with the wave. The weight of long hair can hide wave, and hair can develop very subtle wave even after years of having none. I would probably cut the bangs and the short hair in stages so if some wave appeared I'd still have other options. (I.E. start with longer side bangs then chop the blunt bangs, start with a longer bob, then a chin length before I chopped it to a very short bob).

She went for her consult this morning. Her hair is stick straight, so the style will not be a problem. She is aware that the bangs will need frequent trimming; about every two weeks, and is OK with that.

The stylist is familiar with the two photographs, too. They are very recent and from Europe. Both styles are current. The short style in the second picture is indeed a different cut. The stylist pointed out that the layers around the face in the first picture could not be pulled back into a ponytail.

So, Kelly is off to the stylist this weekend to get the cut in the first picture. The stylist suggested she have the shorter cut done in about six weeks.

Kelly is super happy, (and a whole lot nervous; poor girl), and asked me to thank all you from YLF who offered up your opinions and advice. I tried to talk her into a picture for the group, but she's quite shy. Maybe this new hair will help her with that.

So, thanks from Kelly, and big thanks from me. You're all the greatest.

Cheers

Total agreement with Diana and Katiepea.

I also have a very strong preference for #1 over #2. I'm getting serious flashbacks to those really awful bowl cuts of the 70s. Thankfully, my hair was way too curly for that and my mother never inflicted that on me.

I think her best bet is to talk to a couple of good hairdressers first. Getting your hair to look really sleek like that can be really high maintenance!! I find that I am better to have some soft layering, so that I can either straighten it for a sleeker look, or add some wax to the ends and have it looking more like messy bed-hair! If she is used to long, straight hair that she simply ties up, a lower maintenance haircut might be better!

I agree that bangs can be tricky. Neither my sister nor I can wear them successfully, and one of the first things my hairdresser said of my oldest girl even as a baby was, "No bangs for her!"

I think there are so many wonderful hairstyles a young adult with shiny dark hair could wear. I wonder if the best way to help is to either look at hairstyle pics with her or even suggest your hairstylist if she's someone who could work with her.

I really like the first photo, but am not sure about the second as a cut. I also had the dreaded bowl cut as a child and struggle to get past this as a look on an adult.

My biggest concern for this particular style is that if her hair has any curl or wave in it at all (or if she is cursed with cow-licks like I am), having a really blunt fringe (bang?) can sometimes require a *lot* of styling each morning to ensure it sits nicely.

When I tried a fringe like this a couple of years ago, every morning without fail I had to wet my hair, apply product, blow-dry and then straighten to ensure my hair wasn't an uneven mess. (Yes, my hair IS impossible! ;-)) It was also amazing how often my fringe needed to be trimmed. One day it was the perfect length, the next it felt like it was in my eyes!

Please don't think that I'm trying to talk your friend out of this look. I just want to make sure that she's fully considered whether she is prepared style it every morning and have regular trims to keep it looking great. HTH.

I had the dreaded Hamill Camel (were all girls of my age in the 70's made to wear this??) too. Not coincidentally, I have had quite long hair ever since . . .

Not sure of the question - but without knowing the young woman's facial features, bone structure, hair-type, and style it is difficult to determine if this would or would not be a good look for her. As far as the hairstyle in the 2 pics - I have major poison eye for this style, so can't really give an unbiased opinion of the hairstyle itself!

Diana nailed it. The second cut looks like a pony to me. I have the ULTIMATE poison eye for this hairstyle, having been forced to sport it (Iliterally by having a bowl put on my head by my dad to cut it) for a good deal of my childhood.

I agree with Zap and others who say that #2 is essentially the bowl haircut. IMO this is a REALLY hard look to pull off unless you have amazing bone structure and a lot of attitude. Otherwise it is a very childish look. (And, literally, I had this haircut when I was 3 years old. I think every Asian child my age did.)

I prefer the haircut in photo #1 by about a million percent.

(Also, I personally find bangs, especially of that length and thickness, SUPER annoying, always getting in my eyes and making my forehead itch, and you have to get them trimmed every other week or so, so you should ask your friend if she is OK with that.)

Any reason why your friend shouldn't cut her hair short? It's a cute look. And plus, hair grows back.

I don't think is a ponytail. The shape is too round behind the ears but who knows? I actually have quite a poison eye for this haircut. It looks as if some has put a bowl over her head and trimmed the hair to the outline of the bowl. Not fab IMO. I vote for something more dynamic.

A young lady who works for one of my clients has come to me for advice. She's quite a bit younger than my usual circle of friends, but she looks up to me, and I feel she deserves the best advice that I or the YLF crew can give her.

She's looking at a change in hair style. She has shiny dark brown hair that hangs past her behind. She wears it parted in the middle, no bangs, mostly in a high ponytail. The other day she showed me a couple of pictures she found online. They appear to be from a series, probably of a makeover. She can't remember where she found them.

She would like to have her hair cut like in the first picture, and then a few months later like the second picture. They are clearly of the same girl, and look to be a progression in a makeover series. I looked at the pictures, and I think the second picture shows the hair in the first pulled back into a ponytail. I can't be sure if it's a completely new cut. Hoping those who chime in will give their opinions and maybe shed some light on where the pictures originated.

Cheers
