Thank you for the suggestions everyone! I really appreciate it. : )

I do take a lot to the dry cleaners, especially silk blouses with satiny finishes and sweaters. I don't really like my local dry cleaners because they just press everything on high heat in a giant press, no matter what the material. They ruined the finish on one of my blouses because they used too much heat in pressing it. Plus they put pins in my clothes with the little tags unless I remind them every time not to. So I've tried to hand wash and iron most of my own things because honestly, I think I do a lot better job and I take better care of my things than I see them do. I'm still looking for a dry cleaner I'm happy with, though.

VC, I hear you on the ruching around the waist. I don't have a steamer, but I have hung some things in the bathroom and turned the shower on hot in a pinch and it worked to get some wrinkles out. I will lay the top flat on my ironing board to dry as well. I think that will help.

I think you can wash that and hang it to dry. If you hang it up right away, you may not even need to press it. I very, very seldom need to iron things I hang to dry - but I am RATE, so you may still want to touch it up if you're not.

I'd hand wash it or run it on the most delicate cycle on cold in the machine-the setting I use for my bras.

It looks hand-washable to me - just lightly in the sink or something, then hang to dry. The only concern would be wrinkling after it dries ( I find cotton wrinkles even if hung to dry).

It does not look like a blouse that would be easy to press. Do you have a steamer if needed? I might be a tiny bit concerned that the ruching around the lower half of the blouse wouldn't look right after washing, no matter how delicately. Hmm...lay it out flat on a towel on your ironing board to dry. Straighten out/smooth it out on the towel. I do this with sweaters and it works well. Another thing you could try post hand washing, air drying ...is something called Downy Wrinkle Release - you spray it on, and smooth out wrinkles. It works fairly well. You're not going to be able to iron this thing very easily is all I'm saying.

I've been resisting taking things to the cleaners too. I used to take stuff there at least once per week, but my lifestyle is different these days. Thing is? There are lots of cleaners close by, so I should just start dropping stuff off again.

Do you have other 'dry clean only' items that are just hanging around? A cleaner that is conveniently close by?

Hmm. I hand wash some "dryclean" only blouses in the machine. But I do take things to the cleaners a lot too.

Depends on how devastated you'll be if it gets ruined. I'd be tempted to hand wash cold/drip dry, because it seems like the fibres will be able to take it.

Here's a similar situation: I buy a lot of stuff from a local retailer and they put "hand wash/hang to dry" on nearly everything. Most of it can in fact be put in the washer on delicate (or even regular) with no ill effects. I asked the sales assistant about it once, and she said, oh, Trish (the owner) puts that on everything just to cover her butt.

Thank you so much for the responses and advice, everyone!

I've attached a photo of the top, in case that makes a difference. It does have a lacy overlay, but it's not too delicate since it is nylon/cotton. The lining is 100% cotton.

VC, I'd like to actually wash it in water if possible, because I plan to wear it this summer and I know it's going to get sweaty. I use "Forever New" powder wash on all my hand wash items (underwear and delicates), if any of you are familiar with that brand. My washer doesn't have a hand wash cycle, so I plan to hand wash this top.

Laura, thanks for the tip on "dry clean only" care tags. Interesting!

Weird factoid from when I worked at a dry cleaners: clothing manufacturers are legally liable for whatever care labels they put in their clothes. So basically some of them put "dry clean only" in so that if people wash something and it shrinks or warps, they don't have to replace it.

Cotton/nylon *should* be washable, especially with that high percentage of nylon. Unless there's some kind of trim that could get messed up, I would try washing gently.

What kind of washing machine do you have? If it's one of those HE front-loader fancy things, there might be some settings on it for 'hand wash' and/or even something approximating dry cleaning.

Have you tried Dryel? I have a Dryel kit hanging around, but it's been a long time since I've used it, and I've got a few things that need "dry cleaning". I think you just throw a moistened cleaning pad into a dryer bag and toss it into a dryer? Like I said, it's really been awhile!

With your tops, I'd be inclined to turn them inside out, wash them by themselves (together if they're similar colours) on delicate or handwash in cold water, with a very gentle detergent and hang to try.

That's weird. I would think nylon would make the fabric pretty stable--not likely to shrink. The Loft skirt I thrifted is 80/20 cotton/rayon with a 100% viscose lining. It was DCO. Usually I'm allergic to DCO but for $5 I was willing to give it a go. Washed it on gentle and air dryed it with no ill effects besides a ton of wrinkles. Is it fragile? If not, I'd be tempted to hand wash it.

Hi Everyone!

I just got a couple of tops that are 70% cotton, 30% nylon. The tag says, "Dry Clean Only, Do not use trichloroethylene." I'm not sure why it would be dry clean only if it's cotton and nylon. Has anyone come across a tag like this? Do you think it's okay if I hand wash it and line dry instead?

Thank you!
