Thank you EVERYONE for your input on this issue. I have found these attached camis to be horrendously awkward in a store's dressing room and those items that I have purchased with these camis are a real beast to get on without going into an advanced yoga position! Talk about a wrestling match...

So I am going to remove these built-in camis on most items and, when the day comes that I make a purchase of a higher-end garment or a top that has a dyed-to-match cami (a la Angie's citron blouse, see her post above), I will wear a separate, better-fitting cami of my own choosing. Whew. Now I can take a deep breath and get on with it!

I remove the loops but often keep the dedicated slip. Sometimes I do switch it out for a change, but not usually.

I find many dresses and tops fit a little differently on me than they are 'meant' to on an average-height person, and often the difference is different in the cami and the main garment! (if I'm making any sense). Detaching the two lets me adjust them independently, which helps. Especially as I sometimes end up shortening the cami straps (short height, high full bust means I often want coverage to start higher than offered).

Also, I find it easier to turn each garment inside out and back (for washing, ironing etc), rather than struggling with two layers together.

It depends on the quality of the cami.

Sometimes, I wear the cami itself, if its cotton made only as I tend to get hives after itches if they happen to be polyster or other non cotton. And also I have a top with the cami so thin, I just replace it with a nude cami or some cotton soft cami.

Although I've purchased sheer dresses with attached slips, I've never purchased a top like this. All of mine require ones own cami. I have a huge cami wardrobe now, all purchased for around $5-10 in every color. I like the nylon one size fits all kind.

I usually detach the tabs and wear the cami with the blouse, but also find that I can often wear the cami with other shirts that need one.

The only shirt I have that fits this description actually has tiny little snaps on the loop so that I can choose to wear the cami or something else. I really like that.

Seems like all I could find for blouses this weekend was sheer fabric and half of them had those little camis. I didn't end up buying one but I would replace with a cami that had a strap wide enough to conceal my bra strap (my straps are in particular very ugly though lol).

In the past, I've replaced them with my own black cami's. If it was an odd color, I guess I would wear the one that came with it, not sure as I've not faced this before.

It depends on the cami. For example, my citron blouse comes with a citron satin cami and I use that one instead of my own.

If I decide to wear the cami that comes with a sheer-ish blouse, I always snip those little loops that hold it in place. I think the loops are more meant to keep the cami and blouse together as a 'set' in the store, more than it is to keep the cami 'in place' on the wearer.

Sometimes I like to wear a different cami with the blouse too. For instance, I have a green/blue-ish paisley-type blouse that's sort of sheer, and it came with a royal blue cami - which I'll wear sometimes, but then I also like my navy cami and my green cami with this same blouse. If I left the blue cami 'attached', I wouldn't be able to do this. And besides, I can't imagine trying to launder the two if they were still attached...I'm sure it would drive me crazy! ETA: it already drives me crazy trying to try on these types of 'sets' (cami/blouse combos) in the dressing room. No way am I going to fight with that.

Hope this helps :)

PS - ETA again: I also like to make a point of making sure that any cami that comes as a set with a sheer-ish blouse has adjustable straps. My Mom has bought blouses that came with a matching cami, only to find that the coverage wasn't where she wanted it.

Generally I find that the camis included with see-through tops are too skimpy to function well anyway, so I almost always replace them with one with better coverage. That said, I don't generally buy see-through tops.

No idea -- I've never bought a see-through top! But I think I'd be inclined to use the cami as is, with the see-through top, if it fit right.

When you buy a see-through top and it comes with a cami and the straps of the cami run through a built-in loop (to keep the cami in the right position), do you usually keep the cami "as is" or do you remove the cami and either replace it with another one or wear the original cami unattached to the top?

Yay = I KEEP the original cami exactly "as is"
Nay = I either REPLACE the shell with another one or wear it unattached to the top
