Runcarla, I love your hair in pic 1!!! This is my dream/holy grail hair I wish I had every day ... I can achieve it but seldomly and there's nothing easily repeatable.

Here are two (older) pics of me with similar effect. In both, my hair was cut shorter than it is now, so it curled easier due to lighter weight. This seems to be a common factor. The longer it gets, the less curly.

Pic 1 below, I made tiny braids all over my head while hair was wet, and let that completely dry (took hours) before unbraiding and then fluffing. This is just not practical on a daily basis. Even sleeping in braids does not work, as I mentioned, they were tiny braids, too tiny for barettes etc to hold the ends. Would come unbound in sleep.

Pic 2, I had blown out my hair and flat ironed it but then got caught in a rainstorm. Which happened to have just the right amount of rain -- not too much not too little. Not shown because I can't find a pic but similar to pic 2 is the rare "beach/salt water" day.

As I said on another thread today I have done okay lately with the "flop" method: after 4 or 5 days without shampooing, I wet my hair in the shower, wrap in a turbie, then flop it out. Important NOT to comb it, not even finger comb. Just let it dry. This works okay if my hair is shorter. It works longer too, but I get more of a Rosanna Dana triangle head thing going on.

Question 1: occasionally I'll pull the front & top into a do-do-ball if I'm trying to concentrate on something and the hair is in my face. When its longer, I do a lot of ponytails with those black elastics because I'm lazy and black is the very color DH prefers for his mohawk ponytail so we just buy a bunch and share

Question 2: I use a blow dryer in winter, because my hair is stupid thick and takes for. ever. to dry. I sometimes use the Chi iron, sometimes I go with a more textured/messy look and let it do what it wants.

Question 3: I can do french braids on somebody else's head, but not my own. I do change my hair quite a bit, although less now than when I colored it. I was always tweaking the color formula: just a little more auburn, or more of a strawberry blond, or koolaid red. These days, I sort of switch between that sleek, flat-ironed look and a textured look. I've recently cut off the length and have a bob, but I'm already letting it grow back out. I'll probably keep it inverted for a while longer before I switch it up and have it cut so it frames my face better.

Carla, I love the curly style in your second pic in comments.

I use big barrettes to pull the top half my hair back or to put it up in a kind of twisty messy bun. I have several nice headbands waiting for the right occasion to wear them, also some prettier barrettes than I wear every day. I don't want to wear them all the time--generally don't like to worry about misplacing things like that. I also use elastic bands for pony tails and bobby pins (medium and large) for buns, etc.

I don't use any heat on my hair, or any leave-in products (mousse, gel, hairspray, etc)

I can do a French braid from front to back, and the buns I mentioned above.

Fun topic but I don’t have much to add! I’m a hair minimalist.

I have long, straight, fine hair that I have highlighted and cut every 15-16 weeks. I wash my hair every other day. On a wash day I usually air dry if: it’s not cold out or I have the time (weekends). Otherwise I roughly blow dry it. If I’m going somewhere I’ll put in little cc cream or something, blow dry and put up in jumbo Velcro rollers for 20-30 minutes.

Yes, I have a few styling tricks because I’ve almost always had long hair and my daughter does as well: French braids, fishtails, buns, rolls ...

For some reason I feel weird about braiding my hair in winter but not summer ...

I have some hair ornaments. I can’t wear hairbands because they irritate the spot behind my ears. I do have elastics, scrunchies, large barrettes (to hold all of my hair).

You’re inspiring me to figure out a couple of ways to better style my second-day hair than just a sad ponytail!

Normally I dont use any hair ornaments, with the exception of fabric hair ties for the gym and a feather barette or chain mail headdress for renfaire. In summer sometimes Ill twist it up and clip it with a tortie or dichroic glass clip.
I blow dry after each wash and flat brush, or flat iron it, and use bobby pins on uncooperative bits. I use heat protector, dry shampoo, and color spray to minimize grey between proper coloring.
My hair is just about shoulder length now and layered, so I can do much with it, but when it was long I did all sorts of French and Dutch braids and buns and french twists. I love the look of herringbone braids, especially with different colors, but never mastered it. I should try to come up with a better style for the gym, instead of my sad little ponytail with layers that arent long enough to tie in!

I'm late to this thread, but runcarla I think my hair is very similar to yours in terms of curliness (mine is thinning though and might be finer), and I've been growing it lately after wearing it ear-length or shorter for several years. I have AT LAST reached chin length when dry, hoping to get it around collar-bone length when dry if the thinness allows for it. This is probably my 4th attempt to grow it because whenever I'd get to around your length I'd lose patience and go shorter again!
Anyway, to actually answer your questions... I do not use hair ornaments on a daily basis. For styling I have a few products but I think I've narrowed it to Ouidad curl activating styling foam. It's like mousse but without the stickiness. Must put on when hair is very wet, scrunch through to distribute, then do not touch my hair at all for at least 15 mins. At that point I either just let it air dry or if I have time or if it's cold out I use a hair dryer with a prong diffuser. I do get some frizzing if I do this but much better volume so it's a trade-off. In either case, once hair is 100% dry, I scrunch again to soften the texture (doing this redistributes the product or something? IDK but it gets rid of any crunchiness).
Finally, for exercise I swear by these headbands that are like combs, with teeth all the way around. All other headbands pop off my tiny head within minutes, but these not only stay on but can handle layers. I don't know if they have a special name but I got them in the hair section of my local drugstore, less than $5 for a pack of 3.

I have a few large barrettes that I use when my hair is longer. I'll pull back the sides and pin them in the back with the barrette. But since I got my hair cut shorter a few months ago, I haven't used them because the sides aren't long enough.

When I do have longer hair suitable for a ponytail, I just use very thin polyband elastics. Nothing fancy. And then lots of bobby pins to hold the pieces that are too short to make it into the pony.

I also have a few headbands, but I don't wear them too often because I think I look very Pollyanna-ish.

I will sometimes clip one side of my hair back with decorative bobby pins (I have some bronze-colored ones and some pewter-colored ones, both with roses on the end).

For styling tools, I use my blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. I have wavy hair, and diffusing helps emphasize the wave. I sometimes flat iron my hair if it is dry and not holding the wave very well (this is usually three or so days after washing).

I really don't know much about hair styling and am not very good at it. Like Shiny, I have extremely fine hair that is difficult to work with. Keeping it shorter looks best on me.

For workouts, I use a fabric elastic band thingy to pull up most of my hair on top of my head, kind of like a preschooler. I just work out at home and not in a gym, so it's OK to look dorky.

1. Mostly, I use elastic hair bands to hold my hair in a ponytail or messy half-bun. Sometimes a scrunchie but it doesn't hold as well. I have a couple of vintage barettes and rhinestone embellished bobby pins that I will sometimes use to accent an updo. I have a couple of clips but rarely use them -- my hair is just too thick.

2. I blow dry my hair after almost every wash. In my climate it takes 4+ hours for my hair to air dry and I just get too cold! Plus, I don't like the way my hair looks (slightly wavy, but weird-wavy not good-wavy) or feels (just too thick and in the way) when it air dries. No other styling implements and NEVER EVER EVER any product!!! (Every product that has ever been put in my hair -- note the deliberate use of passive voice -- has made it look super dirty and greasy within a few hours.)

3. I can do a Gibson tuck but it's hard to get it to stay. I would LOVE to know how to do milkmaid braids etc., in some ways I think that would advance my style more than any piece of clothing I could buy but I just have never mastered braiding my own hair at all. Oh, now I'm remembering that was one of my new year's resolutions last year and I totally never followed through. :-(

For workouts, it's in a messy half-bun and then tucked into a swim cap.

I SUPER love the idea of that "Italian Cut" for you, Runcarla!!!

Janet, I was wearing my SqHair bands quite a bit before winter hit full-force. Now I'm in a hat every time I go outside and that makes the logistics of headbands kind of complicated. The other drawback -- also just a logistical headband issue more generally -- is that when you do want to wear your sunnies (or glasses) the real estate around your ears gets pretty crowded. Does anyone who wears specs also wear headbands regularly? I can't imagine. For me, they're a really good solution to keeping not-quite-grown-out bangs from falling in my eyes all the time. I really don't like the look of tight headbands on my small head; I absolutely need something looser that leaves my hair with some volume and movement. So yeah, they're useful. I picked them up because sunglasses-on-the-head was becoming a noticeable signature.

I love the classic look of Alice bands and pearl barrettes; it suits the preppy part of my Gentlewoman persona. Say since I have started wearing glasses all the time, such hair decorations seem to get in the way or look like A Lot Going On. I used to do a lot of scrunchies and hair clips when my hair was longer, because I didn't like to wear it down and loose for work. Now that it is mostly grey it also has more body, so I wear it in a shorter-for-me Lob or Long Bob, which is actually too short in the back to stay up, even in a ponytail.

I air dry my hair because I am lazy (and styling it never makes a substantial difference in how it looks anyway). For the past 5 years at least, I also don't brush it--I just run my fingers through to get out the tangles. It looks better this way; brushing or combing kills the little bit of body that I do have.

I know all kinds of tricks for braiding, French braids, Dutch braids. I also had long haired dancer daughters to practice on. My own hair is too fine for anything halfway complicated; a French twist slides right out. But I can do a Gibson girl; don't do it often, though, because it's not particularly flattering with such fine hair.

What a fun thread, RunCarla! Thanks for starting it.

I use large barrettes—I have a fair-sized collection—to pull my long hair back in a ponytail. I wear it like this the majority of the time. I used to love to wear it in a French braid, but can’t do it myself, and had to rely on my hairdresser to do that for me. The only styling product I use is a dry oil spray (Alterna’s Kendi dry oil spray) that I spritz on after I wash my hair. It’s good for detangling and protects hair from heat tool damage. It can also be used on dry hair but I rarely use it that way.

I wash my hair once a week, and often just put it up on top of my head with clips and go to bed with it that way. It takes a long time for me to blow dry it, and I’m lazy. When I do blow dry my hair, I use a large round brush, similar
to the one my hairdresser uses. Years ago, I asked my hairdresser to give me a lesson in blow drying and styling, and that sure helped me. I’m pretty much a klutz when it comes to styling. If I blow dry my hair, I wii usually then use a curling iron on it. My hair is coarse and thick, with lots of body, so anything I do to it will last for the bettter part of a week.

I'm mostly a minimalist, but I have a little stash of hair-styling bits and bobs: a pack of black Goody bobby pins, some black Scünci elastics; a few larger barrettes (to hold back bangs when growing them out); a set of Grip-Tooth combs, a couple of "SqHair" headbands (designed to fit loosely like sunglasses!), and some stretchy cloth yoga-style headbands (which look terrible on me but for some reason I keep them anyway). I like to go back and forth between a pixie and a bob, and having a variety of hair holders is useful for the growing-out phase! That said, my hair is very slippery and doesn't much like being confined! Bobby pins in particular just seem to slip right out.

I only run outside, not in a gym, and I'm either wearing a cap, a visor, or a beanie, so I never worry about putting my hair back when it is long enough to do so (which is rare!). The only time I wear a ponytail or half-pony is at home sometimes when cooking or cleaning. I don't like the "camp counselor" vibe I give off when wearing a ponytail, so they are not really a part of my look. There's a reason why I prefer short hair! My hair hasn't been long enough to braid in... ever?

In terms of product, the only thing I've been using lately is "beach waves" salt sprays. I've tried a lot of brands but the scents tend to be too much for me, so I prefer to make my own. I use a slightly modified version of this recipe. I probably have some mousse lying around, too, from past theatre productions. Theatre is also the only time I'm willing to heat style. I find heat puts a lot of stress on my hair since it already tends toward dryness.

I am not much of a minimalist in many ways, but I guess when it comes to styling my hair, I am.

1. I have almost none of this. I keep a couple of old barrettes and I have simple ponytail holders — that is it.

2. I usually use a blow dryer after washing my hair, but I try not to dry it all the way to prevent damaging it. For a night out or something, I will sometimes attempt to dry it straight, so occasionally I’ll use a flat iron. But that’s rare.

3. I have zero styling tricks. LOL I cannot remember a time I’ve had my hair braided. I don’t even think I have had a updo since my wedding almost 16 years ago.

For workouts, I put my hair back in a low ponytail. Takes two seconds.

I used to have a pixie cut and I used more product on my hair than I do now with a graduated bob (mid jaw length). The only products I use are Rusk Radical Creme after I wash and before blow dry. It gives my hair extra texture, body, and condition ( I just use a quarter size amount, rub both hands together and work it lightly through my hair). I wait for my hair to air dry a bit before putting on the texturizer and blow dry using a vent brush or I use Kerastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti Frizz Spray (This stuff is phenomenal! and I only use it when I need my hair to look its best)

When I had a pixie I did not have to tie or hold my hair back when exercising. Now I pretty much use a cooling headband (I have a couple) https://www.banibands.com/collections/cooling. This is great to wear outside in the summer when gardening!

The Rusk Wired Flexible Styling Cream I believe is better for curly hair (bought this by mistake once and later gave to my curly haired friend and now she uses this all the time) https://www.ulta.com/wired-fle.....od10111258

I do have some “tortoise” barrettes. And those fabric ponytail holders. Having a lot of hair I only buy hair products labeled as good for thick hair
Also should note a have zero curl..which for my family is unusual ...

@Jessicams - well, I've always had a longish fringe so I use a long barette to hold hair out of the way when I'm working out. I'm growing my hair longer, and may need to do more to keep it out of the way. It wants about 3 inches to be a stubby ponytail and when I swim it slips out of my swim cap. I don't know how to French braid (popular with longer haired folks in my sports set.). I'm obsessing over a short curly cut from the 1950's called the 'Italian Cut'. (Maybe it's the eyebrows?) My hair is naturally curly, but the style is shown with roller set instructions. For some reason I have a set of velcro rollers in my hair supply drawer that I never use. I think I just like looking at their cheerful colours!

And, it's cold and the first real snowstorm of the year is imminent and I'm missing the old school makeover magazine special editions that don't seem to be published anymore, and I have no idea what is trending for hair and beauty...so I'm tapping into the YLF hive mind!

Right now I have my hair cut into a bob, and the texture is very fine but thick. I wash it a couple of times a week, then styling product, blow dryer, curling iron, then pin the “curls” with hairpins while it cools, then hairspray. On the in-between-wash days, I use hairpins to create pin curls on top of my head before I go to bed. This allows me to finger comb and go in the morning (more or less and with hairspray of course.)

I recently cut my super long hair for no other reason than I was feeling like it looked a little “granny clampett” (FWIW I am on the cusp of 60 and indeed AM a granny) and needed to change it up. When it was long, messy buns, French braids, French twists - I did it all! Rarely just wore my hair down or in a simple ponytail! I miss it -am thinking about growing it out again because I like having my hair out of the way. Of course, there’s the money savings from only going to the stylist twice a year....

ETA: I wear headbands when I need to (cooking, bad hair day) but don’t care for the look, so I about it.)

Question #1: do you use hair ornaments to style your hair? Barrettes, Alice bands, scunchies, clips, pins, ribbons, etc?

It's been years since I did any of that, as I keep my hair shorter. I do think barrettes are cute, and I remember trying out fancy barrettes but my hair is so fine they just don't stay in. The only barrettes that work are baby barrettes and I'm too old to go there. I do remember a long scrunchie period in the late 80s/early 90s. Scrunchies worked when my fine hair was longer. I tried to grow my hair out recently and it was just not a good look, so even if they are back in style, I'm not going there again.

I can't really even use elastics to make a pony tail. The elastics fall out because my hair is just so fine. If I try to make a bun with an elastic it stays a little better ... but it makes what those who know me IRL call my "nubbin." It's basically... very pathetic. Hence why I keep my hair short!

Question #2: what tools do you use to style your hair? Blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron, cimper, rollers (Velcro or other), ratts and other hair supports, rags, bobby pins?

At the moment just a blow dryer and a big old fat roller brush. I have in the past used a flat iron and still have it. And may use it again, but once my hair is completely grown out (stopped dying it about a year ago, still have some ends). I remember using a crimper just once when I was in my 20s, late 80s. Rollers we used when I was in high school, before I got my hair permed, heh. Rarely have used bobby pins because they fall right out. Have tried rags periodically to curl my hair with mixed success.

Bonus question #3: do you know any cool styling techniques like french braids, retro rolls, French twist, and such? Do you change up your hair (short or long) regardless of the length? How do you manage your hair during work outs?

Not really. I've always sucked at hair styling. I blame my hair. Heh. It's super fine! But not straight-- it's wavy. I have learned the "flip and flop" post shower. I.e., you don't wash your hair for days. I've gone lo-poo in the last year and will go 5 or 6 days between shampoos now. (menopause helps here). On 4th day after my shower (I still shower every day and wet and style my hair, just don't shampoo every day), I put my hair in a turbie towel, then when I take it out, I do not comb it at all. I just "flop" it out and don't even finger comb. Let it air dry and it curls like mad. It doesn't work as well on days 1-2-3; it waves, but with frizz.

1. No ornaments or hair ties needed. Short hair.
2. A little mousse worked into my hair with my hands which still have a bit of lotion from applying to my legs and feet after shower, then blow dryer, then freeze-it hairspray while hanging head down, then a little more blow drying, then arrange hair into place a little spiky, then more hairspray. When it’s a week or two after cutting and very short, I rarely use a round brush, but the longer it gets, I might tame down the ends with one.
3. No braids or ponytails for me, but my two daughters always had long hair when they were in school, and I braided or French braided for one or both most days, and we had baskets full of clips, barrettes, hair bows, scrunchies, pony tailers, and bobby-pins. So my little granddaughters who barely brush their hair and use no clips or barrettes to keep the hair out of their eyes drive me bonkers.

Let’s see:
1: I don’t use accessories purely for adornment (e.g., crystal barettes, bows) but for pure functionality I LOVE a product called *spin pins* made by goody. They look like a large spiral of metal and I use two at a time for updo/messy buns. They hold through yoga and dance class. No more ponytail damage!
#2: I used to use a dryer and flat iron daily. I got a major haircut last month, so now I use a cocktail of product (serum, styling creme, oil) and air dry or clamp hair into an updo before bed for wavy results. I will break out the iron if my hair is being stubborn/frizzy.
3: I’ll do a messy bun a few days a week, but I can’t tackle anything fancier!

Ooh fun! I don't use many hair accessories, but I use black or brown soft hairties for sleek ponytails, and those ties that look like old phone cords for pulling it out of my way when I cook and clean.

Styling tools - I use a blow-dryer, and round brush, and a flat iron or curling iron sometimes. Product wise I use a moisturizing hair oil when the ends get dry, dry shampoo when needed, and sometimes some hairspray to keep my ponytail neat.

I have gotten better at hairstyles now that I have a long-haired dancer-daughter to practice on ... Braids, fishbones, french braids, ballet buns ... I'm on it!

1. At the moment, I don't use accessories. In the past, with longer hair, I sometimes used barrettes, bobby pins, scrunchies, etc. It took a LOT of pins (more than 40) to secure a bun when my hair was just past the shoulder. I have very heavy thick hair. No wonder it feels better short!

2. To style, I use nothing other than a bit of product. Air dry and go. When my fringe is longer I sometimes would flat iron it.

3. I know how to French braid and can do it on others! Workouts do not present me with any problems, for obvious reasons, but if I were a swimmer I would need a good cap to protect from the chlorine.
