I always think of chambray being light in colour - and consider this shirt denim - but it probably is dark chambray.

I love this shirt to wear with jeans in winter, I like that it is dark (pale blue is not flattering on me near my face) but because it is soft it sits nicely.

Chambray is not denim in my mind either. The plain weave versus twill weave makes the difference.

I do consider blue chambray and blue denim as the same kind of color.

I don’t have an opinion about trompe l’œil “denim” sweatpants.

Well, I once had a chambray shirt that looked like denim and was heavier in weight than the chambray dress - but it wasn’t as stiff as denim. Then I have a pair of jeans that are very soft and light weight, but denim. I’m like RobinF. I think denim adjacent is a good description.

I think of denim and chambray as being entirely different. I have a denim dress that I have never thought was similar to my chambray dress.

I guess I am an outlyer in that I would consider chambray denim but a lighter weight. I probably think of it that way because I would wear it in the same way as my denim items.

I don't have any in my closet currently. The last chambray shirt I had was SO light that it didn't hang nicely so after many years I finally got rid of it.

I used to think chambray was denim, just lighter. Then I’d buy chambray pieces and couldn’t make them work. Rinse repeat. I finally woke up and realized, chambray isn’t denim, and for me it’s not even denim friendly, but it is nice for warmer weather
The Trompe-l'œil “jeans”, i guess I’d say they are denim adjacent. Definitely not denim, but they can sub in most of the time.

Not denim but goes well with real denim - love lightweight fabric, especially if it's lyocell . I have couple shirts - one of those with short sleeves - great in summer!

Not denim, but a great fabric for summer wear. I do have a chambray dress that was long a mainstay of my summer wardrobe. I moved to shorts and skorts some years ago, but still have the dress. I’ll have to revisit it when the summer rolls around again.

I don’t have chambray but would not consider it denim.
I have trompe l’œil jeans, fabric is soft viscous, summer weigh. Although they look like jeans, I don’t count them as such.

Well I agree with Angie about chambray - not denim, too soft. Denim look sweats and the like are also not denim, but they are denim adjacent.

Chambray is different from denim in my mind -- lighter and more summery, which is why your dress works well for hot weather in chambray.

I like chambray but don't currently own anything in the fabric. I do have two denim shirts, though.

My 2 cents, Carla:

Chambray is not denim in my mind ;) It doesn't look like denim. It looks like cotton shirt fabric!

Fleece that looks like denim is by no means the same as a pair of pukka jeans. BUT! The pattern is soooooo good that unless you touch the fabric, you are 100% fooled into thinking it's real denim. That's why it made into the denim trends post :)

After Angie’s blog post on denim trends, I decided to create a ‘denim’ capsule with my Finds. That got me thinking about chambray.

Here’s a definition of chambray: Chambray is a cotton plain-weave fabric made with a dyed warp yarn and a white filling yarn. Chambray is traditionally light blue in color, but can be found in a wide range of fashion colors. While it may look like denim, chambray is lighter and is woven differently.

When considering elements of style, do you lump chambray items in with denim, or consider them something else entirely? Same for ‘denim look’ sweat pants or other faux denim items.

My denim items, below - including a chambray dress.
