I think black sandals can have a place too -- I have some black sandals that I can't imagine getting through summer without, but I do have dark hair, and I wear some black in the summer as well, although not as much as I do in the winter.

I found that wedge sandals with black uppers and light cork wedges do nice job of grounding a look visually without making it too heavy. Not sure if those would be on your radar or if you're only interested in flat sandals.

Hmm, while in general I agree that gold/nude/tan is the most flattering, I think black sandals have their place too.

I have the same coloring as you and am extremely pale. I have a pair of black gladiator sandals (which cover even more than yours) that I wear very often to add some edge to the light summery outfits, especially in the evening. I also like to pair them with unexpected pieces like pencil skirts.

Could you get two different pairs, both black and gold?

I probably wouldn't buy them unless I only wore them with dark pants, which I rarely do in summer so it wouldn't be a worthy investment for me.

Yay for gold!

I'm with Rae here. I wear black all year, but have dark hair so black shoes sort of bookends my hair. Since you pointed out that you have blonde hair and pale legs, I think the gold sandals will be less stumpifying

Thanks everyone - some great advice and feedback here, and I really appreciate it!

Claire - interesting points. The pair that I wore into the ground last summer could be characterized as "Jesus" sandals, but I'm not sure? Just plain brown every-day sandals - but they worked with denim skirts, more casual skirts and a lot of my shorts. But like I said, I actually had to throw them out at the end of summer - I'd totally wrecked them.

I also had (have) a pair of fabric wedges that are insanely comfortable - they've seen better days, and I'm thinking I might replace them, because even though they have a slight heel - they are incredibly comfortable and work well with my very casual summer wardrobe. I get 'thrown into' dressy situations at the last minute, but I am covered when it comes to those kind of shoes. I am not covered when it comes to casual, everyday sandals for summer at all - in fact, I'm wearing these horrible cheap-o flip flops (not in public, just around the house) that I bought a couple of weeks ago when the stupid powder pink things the nail place gave me broke long before I'd made it to the car. (could use an embarrassed face smilie here). In my defense - these are the first pair of flip flops I've owned since I was about 12?

Kate - thanks for the suggestion of olive - I can totally see that working too - I'll look.

Ok - so black is out. Unless they're more delicate looking, but then...I'm pretty sure I have loads of fancier/dressier sandals. Way too many, even. They come in handy, but they aren't my everyday summer sandals that I can wear with shorts and denim skirts etc.

Still waffling on the gold. But then, I'm kind of chicken when it comes to something new.

Hi VC! I have been doing some deep closet-soul-searching and realized that my dark denim skirts and shorts want to be paired with a darker shoe to sort of "ground" them. I have metallic, and nude and turquoise sandals, but somehow a stiff denim skirt of heavy material needs something darker near the feet to my eye. So I totally get your idea of a black sandal. I think these particular ones will be stumpifying with skirts however.
Have you tried a dark espadrille-type fabric sandal? The fabric keeps it from having that hot feel. Also how do you feel about dark brown? I just bought some brown Jesus sandals today to wear with my denim skirts. Not everyone's cuppa, but my fussy feet loved them. They have a fairly high vamp, but nothing like an ankle cuff. Ya know what? Their vamp isn't any lower than the ones you posted so I'm going to shut up now! There is something about a black sandal with black trim and everything that seems like it would be harsh on a blonde. Just sayin'.

If you get the gold the thicker strap up top won't be nearly as shortening as they would be with the black since they will be nude-ish

VC, I have your coloring, and I that find black sandals in summer can be really harsh, especially if there is a lot going on strap wise. Lemonade's solution—black sandals with thin straps—is one work-around. I've also found that for me, black sandals with straps high on the foot or that wrap around the ankle are definite no nos.

My new black sandals have thin straps where it counts and a mix of metallic and leopard.

Have you ever considered olive colored sandals? I bought a pair on a whim last summer on vacation and I have worn the heck out of them. They seem to go with everything and are actually low contrast with my very pale skin and hair.

All very good points - thinner, strappier black sandals are probably more workable. I also took note of the fact that these have that wide-looking band right across the ankle.

I can't do straps across the foot...they make me look stumpy at 5'4.
But if you are tall with very long lean legs they would be great!

Yay for finding the gold!

I have black sandals, but I also have dark hair and wear black throughout the year - usually pair my black sandals with a black tank or handbag. In terms of stumpifying, since these straps go right across the ankle bone, they are going to shorten the leg more than a low-vamp shoe in the same color. However, the low-contrast gold should solve this problem.

With black sandals I think it's hard. I find that I only like those with very thin straps that keep them light, otherwise not only do they look stumpifying to my eye, but also too granny-like. Just my two cents here Ecco is a nice brand, but I'm sure you can do even better!

Black seems like a harsh color to me, in the warm weather. Especially with your fair hair...but if you do navy, denim, brown it could work....I just wouldnt pair it with any light bottoms- whether its a skirt or pants. Good luck!

Thanks everyone - yes they do have the gold colour. I'm looking on Amazon...just that my size isn't available. I will look around at some other sites and see if I can find gold in my size.

I must have known that these might be stumpifying for summer - hence my hesitation to just order them without asking here first.

eta: here's a link to the shoes on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/ECCO-Wom.....38;sr=1-86

I believe Angie had listed these as one of her 'picks' in the gold awhile back, if I recall correctly.

Thank you modgirl - that's kind of what I was afraid of. These come in metallic gold as well, but so far - I can't find my size.

I'm going to keep looking.

It's 92F here today (this is 'spring' weather). Summers mean 100+ temps. So I don't generally wear jeans (or even pants) very often in the summer. It is true though, that most of my summer bottoms are dark colours. That said, black sandals against my pale (practically glow in the dark) legs might not be so flattering, especially given light hair. Very little chance of book-ending, at least not without a lot of effort.

I have worn my denim skirt with black sandals and I think its ok, I paired it with black top though, I think it gives it some balance. Modgirl brought up excellent point also-metallic sandals. I have a pair and wear these all the time because I don't like light colored shoes in general but metallic goes with everything. Just another idea for you

Most of my shoes are black and I think I solve the problem by wearing dark/dark neutrals pants with it or jeans. I don't really care for the look of black sandals and light colored pants especially if you are "height challenged" like I am! I like the ones you picked a lot, I think its a great choice for summer and will go with number of things

I'm about to buy a bunch of summer sandals, as the 'go to' pairs I wore last summer were worn into the ground.

My question is whether black sandals aren't all that workable for summer? Especially given that I have very pale legs, blonde hair and blonde eyebrows/lashes. There wouldn't really be much of a bookending effect. Does this matter?

Amongst the sandal considerations, I'm looking at these Ecco banded sandals (in pic#1) as a good 'go to' casual sandal to wear with bermuda/clam shorts and very casual skirts throughout summer. I can't find the gold colour in my size. In terms of casual summer skirts, I have a few denim pencil skirts, a new mustard-ish linen blend skirt, a brown cargo skirt, a black cargo skirt - you get the idea. I also have black slim-cut bermudas, those Kut from the Kloth (dark blue) denim clams and so forth. Once in a rare while, I'll wear long light coloured pants, but this isn't the norm - it's just too hot for that. At a certain point, even the denim shorts become too hot, and I stick with casual skirts and lightweight bermuda shorts.

I'd prefer a lighter coloured sandal, but comfort and walk-ability are most important to me.

Are these too harsh-looking for summer on pale legs with fair skin/blonde hair? Are they going to be stumpifying or glaring somehow?

Thanks for any commentary/advice - negative or positive. I'm attracted to these because they look very comfortable and I've had good luck with the brand as far as fit and walk-ability.
