We love Quebec. DH and I have gone to Montreal a few times for vacations and always found lots to eat. We are both vegetarians. The food is amazing in Quebec. It is like Europe. Yum yum. We are thinking of going to Quebec City and Gaspe Bay in a few weeks.

Check the weather. It could be warm, cool, rainy, who knows. I agree that comfortable shoes are needed. Cobblestone streets are hard are the feet. I found the men and women very stylish. Lots of scarves. French influence. We always went in the winter.

Even my dog loves Quebec. Maybe we will move there.

I spent the summer there 20+ years ago and absolutely loved it. No advice except relax and enjoy. You'll feel like you're in Europe. Have some poutine

My dh and I spent last weekend in Quebec City for our first visit. We had a great time. We are not vegetarians but do not eat meat. We went to 3 nice restaurants and none had vegetarian options (we had fish) and two didn't even have salads as appetizers. I would suggest you look at menus on line before your visit, or email the restaurant and ask questions, or read menus as you wander the old town and find a place that will work.
As far as clothes...gear everywhere on everyone. It was warm but very few dresses or shorts. There were white capris on almost every woman over 50! I would wear what you like but casual was typical even in the restaurants at night.
Check out the via ferrata parc de la chute montmorency a lot of fun and a beautiful waterfall. We also did a bike ride with http://www.cycloservices.net and would recommend them highly if you want to see some of the countryside!
Really a fun city to walk around and find cute cafes and art galleries.
Have a great trip!

In Montreal, for vegetarian (vegan, in fact) try ChuChai. My DH went with stepdaughter (who is vegan) and totally loved it.

Go to Simons in the old city. Fun shopping. Also many cool boutiques there. Read "Bury your dead". By Louise Penny. Pretty quick read, a mystery and really makes the old city come alive. Have fun
Sorry-posted twice. Havedouble the fun.

Very fun! I echo Suz on the temperature. I spent several days in QC the third week of August last year and it was quite warm - even hot. It was around 30 degrees every day, plus some humidity. I did not wear pants or a jacket for the entire 2 weeks I was on vacation. Having said that, I would pack both just in case because you just never know.
I wore shorts and a top every day but you could easily be comfy in a summer dress. In QC, the old city, there are loads of steps so make sure you bring your walking shoes. I had sandals and runners with me. I opted for runners and still my feet ached at the end of the day. Even with socks I had blisters.
In the old city there are loads and load of wonderful cafes and restaurants. I do not think you will have trouble finding a vegetarian option.
I am just up the road from Suz so our climate is similar.

How fun! I don't have much advice for vegetarian eating but there are some lovely restaurants in Quebec city. Check the long range forecast. It may not be as much cooler as you imagine. We have had a cooler than usual summer where I live (Eastern Ontario) but it's warmed up recently. And on my recent visit to the Maritimes it was warmer there than at home. I would say temps of about 20-26 would be the kind of range you are looking at. But it's quite windy there, which might mitigate the temps.

Montreal is usually hot and muggy in the summer. Much more similar to what you are used to, maybe a few degrees cooler, but not necessarily. Humidity will be high, as you are used to.

Hi all. My dh and I will be heading out to Quebec City for one week vacation and can't wait. I'm looking forward to cooler weather and warm clothing.

I know there are many Canadians on this wonderful YLF board so I'll need your advice on what to wear (different temps down here in the NE USA at 85-90 degrees/28-30 celcius), places to see, what to eat (+1 vegetarian). I've visited once back in 1995 for a long weekend but barely remember it and now I get to share this trip with my DH. We may also do a day trip to Montreal.

Would love to get your input.
