nicoleb, i think being between hourglass and pear shape is a *very* common body shape in young women, possibly the most common one? So you're not alone.

ETA: I'm also in this between hourglass and pear category. I carry most of my body weight in my thighs and rear.

Bran - thanks for the link! I'm going to have to read more in detail and take a shoulder measurement when i have more time. I dress my body to balance out my main pear shape and over time and with this site's help i've learned what really works for me. Thanks!

Mo - that's really helpful too thank you! Which leads to me conclude that you and Angie are correct in that my secondary shape would be hourglass. Because...

When i'm at my target weight or when in the past i've been below it my waist and hip measurements will decrease but my bust really does not. While i don't think it's physically possibly for me to ever have a 34" hip measurement the balance is closer to being even. Where as when i gain weight (hello winter!) I turn predominantly more pear shaped as i will add inches in my hips and thighs making me less balanced.

So hopefully that makes sense and thanks everyone for helping out! I have learned something new about myself today.

body typing is tricky...maybe it would help to put on some fitted workout clothes and look in the mirror. See if your upper body and lower body look visually balanced, or if your upper body looks smaller (measurements are helpful too, but I think that sometimes people with similar measurements carry their weight a little differently). I think that the main purpose of knowing your body type is to know where you're off balance (if you are) and to dress to bring your body back into balance. Basically making yourself appear more hourglass, not long or short waisted etc.

From your measurements, it sounds like you have a defined waist. From doing some reading, I learned something that was helpful to me -- some people have high hips, and a "shelf" like curve from waist to hip, while others have lower hips and a more gentle curve from waist to hip. If you check out this blog:

http://www.insideoutstyleblog......pes-x.html

It's the 8 versus X shape. I figured out that I am an X shape (not the voluptuous archetypical hourglass), maybe that's the case for you too? It depends on whether your shoulders and hips are of a similar width, not on your bust to hip measurements.

BTW, I love your WIW's, you have such great style and always look great! So it seems like you're already pretty good at dressing your shape

Nicole, I have similar measurements to you and always thought I was a pear. Nope - hourglass! I was surprised. But I also seem very straight from the side, in my eyes anyway.

Interesting ladies thank you!

Bran - that makes a lot of sense!

My measurements are 34-27-37. I gain weight in my thighs and hips and i believe my shoulders are pretty narrow. So those are all pear things. But i'm not curvy. I've always thought of my body as like, um, one of those flat pieces of lumber lol. I have wide hips for my body but if i turn to the side i don't have much of a chest or butt. Lucky me! x.x (that was sarcasm.) I also don't really feel my waist is really all that well defined even though it is obviously the smaller measurement.

Angie - i'm going to have to go back and read your blog post all about body types now!

I also think a secondary type may come into play with variations in weight. Because I have fairly broad shoulders, I think I qualify as hourglass, but with extra weight, I become more pear.

I echo the ladies. People can be spot on one body type, or rotate between a few. I am slap bang in the middle of hourglass and rectangle. Not quite straight enough to be a true rectangle - my little curves allow me to bat for Team Hourglass half the time.

Nicole, I think your secondary body type is hourglass.

Hmm, when I get pudgy I start seeing some apple tendencies and that's when I know I need to lay off the cupcakes. But right now and most of the time, I am an hourglass through and through. No other body type comes even remotely close.

hmm no I don't think so...I think that some people are "in between" body types, and others might change body types when they gain or lose weight, but some people fit the definition of one particular body type very well. I think that you would be a solid pear shape if your shoulders and bust are noticeably smaller than your hips, and you have a defined waist, small midsection.

These are just my thoughts, so take them with a grain of salt:
If you tend to gain weight in the middle, you might have some apple. If you appear to curve in and then out at the waist (instead of only out to your hip), you might have some hourglass. If you're slim and your hips are the largest part, but not really very much out of balance, and your waist isn't super-defined, you might have some rectangle.

You could always post a photo and ask for body-typing help if you're unsure

I agree with QM. I do have a secondary (and possibly tertiary) body type, but I don't think everyone does. Some people are "classic"!

I would say no.. Many people are very solidly one body type. I'd guess that most people have a variable though.. I'm an hourglass but short-waisted/high hip so belting isn't a simple no-brainier for me as it is for many hourglasses.
