I also think Angie said to go with your size if you have a straighter figure and to go one size up if you have a curvier figure. Mine gave me a muffin top in my size so I went one size up.

I was in the same position, so I did an "Ask Angie." She suggested that I go with my normal size because I am straighter shaped. I took the same size as I take in Sloans. They are fitted, but I wouldn't feel uncomfortable wearing them without something covering my rear. So, looking over my answer, I don't think I'm actually helping you decide, but that's where I wound up. She did say that they shouldn't fit legging tight. Maybe that's helpful?

Thanks Lisa. Since I posted that, I've tried them on again, and am leaning towards the larger pair. It helps to know yours aren't snug at all and you obviously like that fit.

I have these, and just wanted to briefly comment to let you know I've read your post

I don't have anything to contribute here but will be following with interest. I only tried one size on and was happy with the fit. I never wear anything exposing my midsection or crotch area so I haven't considered any of those issues. Mine are not tight fitting at all ,and I'm happy with that. I plan to layer over them with longer tops anyways...
I can't say I've ever noticed ponte pants bagging out in any notable way, so I assume/hope these won't either.

I could post pics, however I'm pretty sure it won't show well given the black.

How are people wearing their flares? Snug or looser? I ordered two sizes, and both seem to fit equally well, just different. I wouldn't wear the smaller size without something covering my butt, as they are a bit leggingy looking... ie snug. The larger size is still pretty form fitting, so I may also keep them to be worn only with longer tops, but they definitely have a slightly looser look... some extra fabric in the top of leg/crotch area. While these ones are a bit more comfortable "out of the bag", I'm a bit afraid they'll stretch out with wearing, and look baggy. Do we have any info on if this is likely to happen yet?

In case this helps, I'm almost always an 8 in pants, but sometimes will take a 10 if it's a slim fit.. 8 in Sloans. 29 generally in jeans. The sizes I'm going between are the 8 and 10.
