With two weeks to go, I’ve started checking the weather abroad!

@ Jules - thanks for the update on Amsterdam. Not staying over this time. I did spend 2 weeks in Amsterdam and Rotterdam (with a side trip to Bruges) fall of 2017. I totally understand your affection for the city.

Oh, Carla, that sounds like such a fun, charming and romantic trip!!! So exiting!
I have not much to add regarding the travel capsule. You’re far better at it than I am.

Just returned from a trip to Amsterdam with 3 days’ side trip into small town northern Germany. I fell in love with the city and hope you have a few days there at the end? But the river cruise is also a dream trip for me and I look forward to your report :)
I had the same thought as Angie about dinner - personally I enjoy having a reason to change for dinner, especially when it’s the main activity of the evening. Show off the dressier side of your style!
In terms of outwear, wool coats were very popular (puffers definitely also around but much less ubiquitous than in Paris in March 2023) so I’m assuming there’s a good reason for that, comfort wise. If your puffer goes under the coat I think you’ll be sorted for warmth. Street markers (and shops) have tons of big warm scarves so you might find yours there (I travelled with the one I bought in Paris and it was a winner). Similarly the wool beret I got in Paris was very practical although not on trend (tuques were favoured but not too many people in hats at all yet - I needed the extra warmth for walking around all day when weather was damp).

Amsterdam seemed like a Mecca for coat shopping actually - wool, puffer and trench/rain poncho options. It makes sense given the walking/biking lifestyle that was very apparent - the city is relatively compact with few cars on the road. I wish I had the time to commit to coat shopping there and it’ll be something I plan on next time!

Have a wonderful time! I’m already dreaming of my next trip back, hopefully for Christmas market season

Sounds like a wonderful trip! Just came back from a few weeks in Spain—including a week on a boat. Two things to consider as the weather can be extra chilly on the boat—a silk camisole/heat tech layer from Uniqlo (looks like you shop there) and a merino cardigan (also available from Uniqlo). Unlike the other sweaters, you can easily take on/off the cardigan as the weather changes. Both items add warmth without taking up much space in the suitcase. Oh, and compression cubes for packing.

And no, I don’t work for Uniqlo! Their merino is great and seems like few people know about it. Have a great trip!

Olukai makes an identical (to the one in your inspiration photo) leather sneaker . Very comfortable with great arch support. Available on line and in certain stores. Not that I'm an expert on river cruise wear, but I'd be adding a 1/4 zip sweatshirt (see Aritizia or Lululemon ) that looks casual or dressier with a scarf at the neck. Also a cashmere sweater - Uniqlo? - to go dressy or casual. I'd also have an elevated rain topper of some sort - like a mac or even a bomber to wear on the boat. But that's just me. A friend just did a Danube river/cycle cruise in September and while she loved it, it was wet a LOT.

How exciting, Carla! Very exciting :)

My 2 cents:

I think your capsule is a great start, but there are too few items. You tend to change for dinner on this type of trip, which is a fun thing to do too! May I suggest bringing a few dressier items, and a few more casual ones rather going the "everything can double-duty" route.

Only one silk scarf? That does not sound like "Carla"!

The boots and flats look great! The Chucks look very Summery so I greatly encourage another type of sneaker or oxford.

You will need hosiery to wear with the flats and skirt :)

Ouu.. how exciting, looks like you’ve got a good handle on your wardrobe, however my only concern would be if its raining a lot, I only see a cloth coat and a lightweight puffer with no hoods. Will the wool coat really be sufficient enough?

Love the capsule -I can see it working well for you in the cold. I would take at least one or two merino vests to wear or heat tech or similar.

Love the beret as a personal touch. And what a fab trip -how exciting! My parents cruised the Rhine and loved it
- they said there was no shortage of food.

What a fun-sounding trip! I'm sure it will be fascinating for you and DH and a great change!

If it were me, I would be wanting to add a few less casual looking tops -- a shirt or blouse, perhaps, or a velvet top, perhaps? I'd also go for leather sneakers vs. Cons but then Cons don't fit me and I would want the warmth / weather protection of leather in winter temps, whereas I know you have been less comfortable in leather sneakers in the past. So your mileage will vary! All in all, it looks cohesive and sensible. Does the puffer layer under the wool coat well? The colours don't look super compatible in the picture, but maybe in real life they do work, especially if you use a patterned scarf to tie them together?

This is a good capsule, I like the idea to sub canvas converse for leather sneakers. I’ve had a lot of success with Ecco’s over the years. And my latest green sneakers are waterproof and by Spring step.

Do you need a cover up and sandals or flip flops for the swimsuit? Or will you be able to change at the pool?

This looks like a practical and attractive packing list. I do like the solid sweaters and versatile pants selection. Even though looking for chilly and possibly wet weather, I’d probably add a presentable cotton button shirt or even a short sleeve tee or top, just as an added layer or if it happens to be hot in the sun while you’re outside, which could also provide a cover up for swim wear. Perhaps this is what you intend for the heat tech items? But I am very guilty over overpacking, and panic-mode packing with the idea of “but what if I want to wear This One and I don’t bring it?”

A month from today I’ll be embarking on a whirl-wind 10 day vacation. DH and I will fly from Toronto, Ontario to Geneva, Switzerland, than move on to Basel for a couple of days before boarding a riverboat for an 8 day cruise up the Rhine ending in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The theme is ‘Christmas on the Rhine’ and we will be visiting villages/towns/cities along the way. We have at least one moderate (guided) urban ramble everyday as well as some freedom to explore on our own. There’s a dress code of ‘smart casual’ for the evening meal, with specific mention that there are no formal nights. Weather and temperature looks to be similar to what we experience here on the northern shores of Lake Ontario - temperatures hovering around freezing or a little above. Possible drizzle, or chance of snow.

Below (in Finds) is what I’m planning to wear/pack. 5 warm sweaters, 3 bottoms (1 faux leather, one corduroy, 1 denim) a skirt, a puffer, and a light weight wool coat, sturdy broken in boots, my favourite Converse sneakers, and a dressy flat. Accessories are: two scarves, three berets, a voluminous and light weight quilted bag.

I figure I’ll wear each top twice, and the bottoms 3-4 times. Everything is mix and match and I can add or subtract layers and choose footwear, based on the activities and the conditions. The pleather pants are especially versatile. They are soft and pliable, and even more comfortable than the green ones that have been such workhorses in my closet. From experience, I know they will cut the wind, repel any precipitation, and keep me warm when out of doors, and they are dressy enough for evenings. I can switch out of the jeans or corduroys and wear the red skirt to dinners as an alternative.

I’m not worried about bringing a rain coat, since the coat has a high wool content and sheds the wet quite well. There’s room in the suitcase for my collapsible umbrella - just in case.

I’m showing a bathing suit, because our hotel in Basel has a pool and spa! Not shown - pj’s, underthings, including some heat tech items, wool socks, a pair of gloves and a pair of shearling lined leather mitts.

I’m keeping my eyes open for a voluminous scarf/wrap that will double duty as a blanket on the plane and a neck warmer. I might sub out the Converse for a pair of leather sneakers (which I don’t have at the moment) though I’ve been plenty comfortable in the Cons when paired with my Darn Tough wool socks.

I run cold, so my goal is to keep warm, followed by comfortable feet!

Have I missed anything?
