The result of a broken wrist year ago i must keep my wrist aligned straight as well to avoid pain. My favorite is to turn the bosu ball (the 1/2 exercise ball on the piece of plastic) upside down and grip the handles on the sides then do my pushups. It elevates the upper body making the exercise slightly easier and also is mobile so you tilt to the side if you use one arm more than the other encouraging balanced strength.

I do them on fists when my wrists are bothering me, like pil! Push-ups are great, as are pull-ups. If you have gymware handy you could do benchpress instead...If you check on bodybuilding.com here and scroll down it lists "alternative exercises". But, pushups work your core in addition to your chest and triceps, so they're really best (and you don't need a bench or weights).

@ Isabel - I think the pushing motion makes this bone chip dance around; I think I should get it x-rayed. :p

@ Gracie - I do flys to work on my chest often; but it's mostly the gym teacher/pride thing to do push-ups

@ Runcarla - I was over at a friend's house and saw a ball and kicked it. Nearly broke my toe. I learned what a medicine ball was that day. Good idea though; I think it can take weight off that annoying wrist.

@ April - I don't think I had very good teachers as a kid; but now I do! I will watch my positioning in the mirror.

@ Pil - My sister is more of the yoga guru; I have trouble going to studios and things, I don't like exercising around people too much. I may pay for private lessons in the summer.

Yep -- when I was growing up, "knee pushups" were called "girl pushups" and they're still what I do. Straight back, make sure your bottom isn't either arched into the air or sagging downward, and put your wrists roughly shoulder-width apart.

And thumb your nose at that gym teacher with each repetition. No teacher of any sort should ever make someone feel so badly about anything that they still remember it as an adult.

I do knee push-ups still, but with one hand holding a medicine ball, and the other on the floor, then switch up. Don't know how it would work on your wrist, but it doesn't aggravate my wonky shoulder.

Ha, ha, I was also ready to read about push-up bras.

If the push-ups are still uncomfortable after you try the above suggestions, may I suggest you work your chest with the dumbell press or fly exercises? That way, you can use the weight that feels comfortable for your wrists without having to put all your body weight on them. Then again, maybe you do want to conquer those pesky push-ups...

YES ! They taught me this at LiveStrong. Push ups on wall ( at an angle ) and then on an exercise ball as you advance. But the wall pushups were great starts for me. You might want to look it up on youtube. You need to be sure that you don't sway your lower back. This is suppose to distribute pressure on your wrists differently. But go slowly and be careful...I am NOT a doctor. : )

I don't have any modifications to offer, but I did want to say that it's possible that a massage therapist could help you with your hand. Sometimes the muscles are injured too and keep the bones from moving back into the right place. Scar tissue can be broken down by massage, and then new muscle grows. I'm really sorry that you had to stop your piano career--that sounds emotionally devastating.

Or try some of those grips you can get. They are a handle that sits on the floor that you grip when doing a push-up.

You also might try doing them against the wall and then on the stairs (stand at bottom of steps ad reach up to edge of a step, gradually standing farther and farther away to angle you down) to increase the angle and the percentage of body weight on your hands and allow your body to build up the little muscles.

Lyn, try clawing the floor with the mounds of your palm and finger-tips to elevate your wrists. This takes the weight off the wrist. Another option would be to come to your forearms instead of full arms (google forearm push ups) These are the modifications my yoga teacher gave me for my carpal tunnel wrist issues.

So, I have increased my workouts to the point where I can easily carry my groceries (including 16L of milk in 2L cartons in recyclable bags), and I wanted to try to do some push-ups.

I remember in my gym class as a little girl, the mean gym teacher yelling at me that I was worthless unless I could do at least one push-up. Unfortunately, I was the only girl in the class who couldn't do one, so I received quite a poor review that year in gym. There was one girl who could do 150, the gym teacher quite kindly (not) pointed out.

I am quite sure I am physically able to do a push-up, however, I only got to two when I tried; there is quite a bit of pain in my right wrist when I try to do it. I have had a dislocated bone in my wrist as a result of a poor heal job after a tumble from my mountain bike. I have had to cut short my piano career because of this injury. It seems to have resurfaced whenever I try to exert too much weight on that one hand.

Although I can do pull-ups just fine, pushing motions seem to be quite difficult with my right hand.

To make a long story short - aside from pushups, what else can I try to test my mettle (and shut up the gym teacher in my head?)
