I agree with your husband. The top of your head is a lighter brown than the lower portions. I think the dark brown would be more flattering if it was uniform and the purple color would be more striking. I agree with Gracie that highlights can be very flattering if they are framing the face.
I'm curious as to why a professional stylist would give you lighter roots without adjusting the remaining color. It almost looks like she chose a warm brown range for the roots and a cool brown range for the ends.
In terms of the purple color, perhaps some thinner highlights framing the face and then some highlights uniformly on the sides and back would be stunning.
I like alaskagirl's color on the ends for a contemporary look.

Wow, I love what your husband said! He is smart! But you look great already. I think it looks amazing in all but the last photo where I am in agreement with Mr. Gracie. But I suspect that is because the exposure is so high. I would consult with your stylist in natural light. I just LOVE the purple effect on you.

I can see what your husband is saying, and I think the effect would actually be a bit more pronounced if you went darker with the rest. Kind of like in the photos Una posted, especially the last one.

I love your hair as is too! I'd also love a “beautiful iridescent pigeon feathers” look. Clever husband

My hair is very dark brown and I am not good at warm or cool but I think it's all neutral? Anyway your stylist should help with that... If you are on Pinterest there are loads of pics.

Thanks, AG! I also am aiming for face framing, maybe I'll add more to the longer strands on each side of my face... is your base color a semi-black, dark-brown? cool? warm? Just pondering which way to go.

I have dark hair and a purple ombré effect - the top is my natural color (minus the grey!) and the bottom is purple. It's fairly subtle, like its been dipped. I would say to add bits in places you would most like - for me it's face framing.

Last summer I enjoyed purple highlights for a few months. Yesterday I had them added again but I think they need improvement and I need your advice please. My stylists had been touching up my roots with a medium brown (a bit lighter than my natural hair color) at my request because I read that dark hair is harsh on us women of a “certain age.” I went pretty subtle with the highlighted strands to start with and knew I’ll be adding more soon.

Before I had a good look outside with a mirror, my DH studied them and declared them ok. Then he gave me a detailed analysis (he’s usually pretty reserved!): That I need to darken my hair all over instead of having the medium brown half-way down. That the purple will look brighter, shinier, silkier and more like “beautiful iridescent pigeon feathers” with the darker color next to it. I was speechless at his immediate assessment of the color and laughing out loud. In his defense, he used to raise pigeons as a teen.

I made another appointment with my trusted stylist tomorrow. What do you see in the color? How can it be improved? are there any terms that will help me describe effect to her? Where should she add more purple, on top, middle, under? (right now it’s mostly under). The first two photos are with natural light from a window, the other two, with overhead fluorescent, with different exposures.

Thank you in advance!
