It's incredibly hard for me to purge tshirts even though those are the fastest to get stained, stretched out and blotchy. What helped was looking up Pinterest and other guides for creative ways to repurpose these tshirts into things like cleaning rags, tshirt yarn and sanitary pads.

Ditto what Suz said. It's a good idea to purge worn-out items from your wardrobe. Dressing better will improve your self esteem and more than likely affect the way others perceive you.

Thanks ladies im frantically looking for a coat or jacket to replace my current one it's literally falling apart pockets having of lining torn etc. Finally figured I'm a tatty old thing last night when dropping of a lovely coat that had never been worn to a friend and I didn't want to go in and meet their guests because of my tat so time to change even if I've to force myself to wish me luck it's so easy to get stuck in a rut

I regularly toss my worn looking items (or donate if they still have life in them.) Life's too short to wear hideous clothes. You deserve better.

If I look shabby, I start to feel bad. If you are home with very small children, consider getting a not-frumpy apron and wearing it to protect your (cuter) clothes--easy to whip off when the messy moment has passed or lunch is put up. I have a darling black one with a monogram and ribbon ties that doesn't look like Mrs. Santa loaned it to me.

You are worth it. You are worthy of looking nice. My compromise at home is to wear an apron virtually all the time. It protects my clothing from getting ruined and the public from seeing rag bag clothing if/when I don't want to change before running to the store.

I love that you are going to get rid of what you don't want to be wearing. It's like keeping unhealthy food out of the house so you aren't tempted.

I have the hardest time giving myself permission to wear "better" outfits as most of my time is spent caring for boy/pets/home. I'm trying to get out of that rut myself, right now. And I followed your model by getting rid of all the tatty and worn out items and also all the "good" things that had grown dated while sitting in my closet. That necessitated a few new purchases as there wasn't much left. I'm reading this blog/forum and hoping to be inspired by those who take joy from making outfits--doing so doesn't/hasn't seemed possible for a long time. :-)

Pick me!! I have had to throw things out more than once because, as long as they were in my closet, I would keep wearing them. Not only that, because I wore them at home I wore them out as well because I couldn't be bothered to change. Small children make life very busy and often I would be running late so I went just as I was. Not good. The best solution for me was to get dressed in clothes fit for public consumption when I got dressed in the morning. This is not always practical but most of the time it is. This is an ongoing struggle for me although my youngest is now 11 so that is no longer an excuse:-/ I find one thing that helps me is knowing what day(s) of the week I will be doing chores that actually require 'not for good' clothes. I have a capsule of pieces for those days and I try to wear them only then.
ETA Having a wardrobe that is easy care also helps. So even if the good clothes get dirty you can just change, if needed, during the day and get in with it.

I have ugly tatty clothes and one pair of trainers that get worn almost daily like a uniform but this weekend all the ugly must go finally I do have some nice clothes that sit in my wardrobe unworn but for some reason I've never plucked up the courage to wear them the fit is nice I feel good in them but once I bring them home I seem to stick to the old tired uniform maybe because I'm home with two toddlers. Last weekend I donated 4 full bags of clothes now just to get rid of the worn ones that weren't good enough to donate but I seem to have no problem wearing regularly out of habit perhaps. Has anyone else done this?
