Hurrah Sounds like an excellent cleanout. Same problem here with being too hot at night. The house seems a lot hotter in the middle of the night then when i go to bed! Gremlins must be playing with the thermostat...

Diana, I will be saving some of the warmer stuff. All our family members' homes require much warmer pajamas in the winter, for one thing! I've had the clear vacuum bags before but they tend to break (because I overfill them, probably), so I'll just keep a few items in the clear bins for days that are cooler inside, and the rest in our basement storage unit. This is where I keep all out of season clothes, anyway. I have some warm PJ sets that I hope to be able to break out again some.

Windchime, thank you! It feels really good.

I know want to purge my entire overstuffed wardrobe, but I think most of the glut is in warm weather items, which are now all in storage. I take some out usually in April, then the rest in late May. I like all of it too much, really, so a simple "spark joy" type of test doesn't help much.

Congratulations! I did a big purge of these items as well right before we moved. I have kind of the opposite problem as you with the PJs/loungewear - we moved from an overheated top floor apt like yours to a house with a more normal winter temperature and a thermostat that actually works (yay modern HVAC system!), so now I find myself wishing I had more warm loungewear! I want to buy all the fleece hoodies and soft pants these days. Literally in the old place I could wear sleeveless dresses as loungewear year round and sleep in shorts and I was fine. Now I actually have to have separate summer and winter loungewear!
So if you have the storage space, and you think you might be moving soon, it might not be a bad idea to keep some of the warmer loungewear. Maybe in those vacuum sealed bags?

The “little” things, such as well-organized drawers that open and close easily, really contribute to quality of life, don’t they? Congrats on a good sorting!

I may want drawer dividers. Thanks for the input, Jane. I have one drawer with socks, undies (not bras) and workout clothes, and the first two often get lost under the latter.

Thank you all! Feels awesome, Angie and TG. Just need to maintain it by putting things away properly. Not my strong suit.

Cindy, the struggle is real! Our bedroom has an a/c bolted into it, as per Nyc law. If we removed it, we’d have to store it till summer and that’s nearly impossible. It’s the only window we have in that room, and it gets so hot and dry at night. I bet some other units are too cold, though.

Jules, wonderful! Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Janet, I demoted some tees as well, to loungewear. They wear out so quickly in many cases. I expect I won’t be wearing sleeved pajamas much in the future even if we do move, since if genetics are an indicator I’ll expect an early menopause. We’ll see!

Great work! That sounds like a big accomplishment, and it must feel so good!

I went through my PJ/loungewear drawer and got rid of some old worn things, and demoted some tees that I was no longer wearing to the PJ drawer, so I’m feeling pretty good about replenishing it from my existing wardrobe.

I can’t wear warm PJs anymore ever since menopause —even though I don’t get hot flashes anymore, I stay warmer at night than I used to. I often wake up a little too warm, even with the thermostat set quite low. That’s ok, it means my pajama wardrobe spans the seasons pretty well and doesn’t take up as much space as it used to!

That purse organizer is a great find, thanks for sharing. This past fall we finally got decent dressers for our bedroom (free from the side of the road at the cottage!) and I did a whole drawer reorg then, it feels great. Today I got 8 new pairs of underwear including 2 new-to-me styles, so I’m looking forward to purging some very tired and uncomfortable ones.

FashIntern, thanks for those links! I love Container Store, and that happens to be where I found the purse hanging thing: https://www.containerstore.com.....;q=handbag

It's in the extreme back of my closet, or else I'd share a picture. It's hard to hang, and I needed to remove the chains from my Minkoff purses, because the whole thing was too heavy otherwise. The purses slide out the sides. It would be better for a closet that's easier to maneuver in, but given that this is in NYC, I'm lucky to have the closet space I do have, even if some of it is hard to get to.

I should have been clearer (ha) - my airtight bins ARE clear. But they don't live somewhere where I can easily see every side of them, so it's a moot point, really. I folded or rolled things up to make items easier to see, anyway.

Sounds like a great clean-out, and I think you're smart not to purge pjs for a home you don't expect to stay in. I'm familiar with the fight to clean and keep air at the right humidity level to deal with asthma--ugh!

If you ever decide you care about folding clothes, take a look at this. I wouldn't expect it to make you want to do laundry, and it probably isn't Kondo Mari, but it is pretty neat, imo. https://www.containerstore.com.....lder/12d?p https://www.containerstore.com.....lder/12d?p I actually used ours for some of our packing, and found the uniform stacks surprisingly easier to deal with. Note that there are (at least) 2 sizes.

And why not clear bins? If you can use your current bins for something else (holiday decor? prepacking for the move, like out of season clothes once you're less than a year away?), I highly recommend you replace them with clear bins. I have my tights and sox in a clear zipper bag (can't remember what comforter or sheet set came in it--it's almost a cube) and I love it. I pull it out, turn it around til I see what I'm looking for, and then they're simple to pull out. They're rolled/folded Kondo style (as suggested on the forum), but the bag is at least 2 layers deep.

I'm very curious what the "hanging object" for purses is. I'm picturing a statue of a horse, or giraffe, with your bags around its neck.

You guys, my bureau was in sad shape. It was bursting at the seams, and I am terrible at folding due a combination of poor fine motor skills and massive indifference.

Today, I had a day at home for once, and I tackled the following:

1. The bureau drawers were coming apart. That was the first thing to fix, and fortunately it was fixable. It's an Ikea model that needs replacing, as it was one of the cheaper ones. But we're moving in 2 years or less, and I don't want to replace until I find out what the new space will need.

2. My loungewear and pajama drawers were too full because too many pieces in the drawers were TOO WARM. For some reason, they've cranked up the heat in my building this winter (which is relatively mild so far), and it's not only bothering my allergies, but it's also rendered my warm loungewear and pj's obsolete. We live on the top floor and get the worst of it, and in particular, the radiator in the bedroom has no valve for us to turn it off.* I put aside a few pieces to purge, but many will go into less accessible bins in my bedroom (mostly hold heavy knitwear) until I decide how much to retain for a future home and for visiting relatives who keep their homes much, much colder. Some is also needed for the times in shoulder seasons when the heat is not on or only barely on. The main thing is that the most accessible items are now the tees, tanks, shorts and light pants I'm actually wearing right now; I've ordered a few more light sleep items that I now have room for (don't need them as much in the summer because of a/c, ironically enough)

3. Socks, undies and workout gear lived in the same large drawer. It was bursting, of course. I purged some socks without mates or that are worn out, though I kept a lot because I have many cute ones. I did have lots of no show socks that don't work and no longer had mates. Out they went. As for undies, I removed a fair few. I have some that are too low cut for me, as I like my belly covered, so I got rid of some of those, as well as anything looking past its expatriation date. Exercise clothes are a small capsule but I purged two items for being too tight.

4. I purged lots of bras. I had some in my former size, even! I need a new bra solution. Third Love thinks I'm a half size, so I may try that out. This capsule is badly in need of more items.

5. I tried to KonMari fold the items in the drawers with all the knit tees and tops I wear out of the house, and my jeans drawer, with good results. I did this to the other drawers as well, but these are the most important ones to try to keep tidy.

6. Next I will try to fold or at least roll the items in the large bins. I resorted to using airtight storage after some bedbugs made storage under the bed in plastic drawers undesirable. Everything I owned went through the dryer multiple times, ruining some items, but it's the best way to kill the suckers. So the bins are not ideal, since I Have to dig around in them but they feel safe to me. I will try to organize them as well as I can. They store the warmer lounge clothes and my bulkier knits.

It's nice that my drawers no longer feel like a war zone! The drawers clothes without forcing them! I also recently found a hanging object to store some of my smaller purses hanging in my closet, which has helped with that overflowing capsule (I put aside two to purge, including one to pass to my mom, but this is a tough capsule for me to reduce.). I'm feeling pretty accomplished, overall. Are drawer dividers the next thing I need? Anyway, I'm not posting any pics because my storage needs are so unique to my tiny space, and I didn't get before pictures, but you get the idea!

* No advice needed on this front, as I deal in my own ways and will soon contact management to complain; the heat has been more moderate in prior years but kicked up suddenly before Christmas. I fear the reason was that folks on other floors were too cold. We are on the top floor and heat rises. If that's why it turned up, then I'm pretty sure nothing will be done, since it's illegal to keep tenants (some of whom own, as we do) too cold, but not illegal to make them need to use a big fan at night during the winter. City living, folks! We need to try to find climate control in the future, for the sake of my asthma.
