I like Angie's list a lot. For me glam rock and rockabilly both have distinctive and different visual looks. To me glam rock is androgynous, 70's inspired and theatrical - lots of flared pants and metallic lycra - i.e. David Bowie and Marc Bolan. Rockabilly (on women) is 50's vintage, bombshell/pin-up sexy - i.e. Dita Von Teese. 'Rocker' is a broader term for me that encapsulates a lot of different elements so might give you more flexibility?

I definitely see 'Maximal' in that there is a lot going on, a lot of different visual elements in each outfit, and 'Alluring' or bombshell in the silhouettes.

One thing I found helpful when coming up with my own style descriptors was to put in one that was aspirational and specifically helped with winnowing my closet and new purchases -- for me that was 'contemporary': the descriptor I felt I wanted to focus more on.

I always love your posts! This has been fun to read! The umbrella sweater is so fun, and it makes me think of Spring. I love Angie's inclusion of Playful. I think it captures the adventurous part that you were struggling with. It also helps with the wonderful eclectic mix you have to your style. I almost want to add Joyful to the list, but Angie uses the word Fun. I really see you as someone who brings joy to the world with your look, and I have the sense that if we met you in person that would also be the case.

Glamorous instead of glam - yes I think I'd agree with that especially how it was explained. I think the same association of "glam rock" sometimes.

I'm going to side with Kiwigal and go for Glamorous over Glam. Glam to me sounds too hard (maybe because of the glam rock associations). Glamorous has more sex kitten AND more sexy librarian, which is really what I think of when I think of a lot of your WIWs.

I also like Rockabilly, but maybe just because that is a really fun word. And maybe it encapsulates Fun itself, so that would leave room for you to add Cozy?

PS That umbrella sweater is most definitely Playful.

Anyway, enjoying this thread.

Okay my two cents worth

feminine
Glamorous
Fun
rockabilly
Soft edge

I see your looks as quite timeless, you wear a mix of old and new, and vintage and rocker. And while they have a rocker vibe, they are often soft with textured and knits. I admire that timelessness about them.

So I've been doing some more thinking, and I think "refined glam rocker" might just sum almost everything up. The only thing is... there are definitely times were I don't feel as adventurous and just want to be comfy/cozy... like the two outfits below. They definitely aren't glam or rocker, and I'm not sure they are refined...? The brown top with leopard scarf could be, but the umbrella sweater isn't (to me). Angie's use of "playful" comes to mind... as it does when I think of my love and desire for more whimsical designs like this, with animals or flowers or insects. So maybe "playful refined glam rocker" could work? I prefer odd numbers, so if I were to put this in a bulleted list I'd want at least one more descriptor in there.

Texsyle - You make a good point about the "punk" aesthetic being very dramatic. I guess it comes down to what people associate punk with. Being in the midwest, and Chicago in particular, "punk" in my circles is much more subdued and viewed more as a lifestyle/community than outlandish wardrobe choices. The colored and spiked mohawks with safety pin adorned jackets are "image punk" and around here that is seen mostly on kids that everyone knows will grow out of it. Of course there is still the occasional older person who didn't, and everyone is absolutely fine with them too. It's a very open and accepting "scene" if you will. Chicago punk for the most part, or at least the people I know, looks a lot like late 90s grunge: tshirt and jeans. Right now there are lots of tattoos and beards on the guys, and either no makeup or lots of it on the girls, with a fair amount of pinup style thrown in there. Also lots of ink on the girls too lol. But not a lot of the "trying really hard to look PUNK AS HELL and piss my dad off" kind of stuff. Best example I could give are the bands Naked Ray Gun and Descendents (even though they are west coast) they didn't have an "image" they just are who they are. Yet they are totally punk - sort of the anti-punk if you will. So I guess I'm drawing my associations of punk with all of those factors, and not, say, Animal or Rancid.

AM - that is an excellent point! Glam could actually cover ladylike AND theatrical AND bombshell... That might be a really good one to keep now that you explain it that way

I think polished (or refined - whichever word resonates better with you), rock around the edges, and feminine are all good descriptors for your style. It sounds like you have a good idea of what you want to obtain on your next shopping trip. I find when I thrift I have to be careful of the "it's only a $1" mentality and really think about each item irrespective of price. It's a great way to experiment with different styles though without breaking the bank. Good luck with your purge - it's sounds like it's going well so far.

Chiming back in here. You also have this sexy bombshell vibe. Ladylike doesn't cover that. And rocker doesn't either. I think I included glam as a way of covering that part of your style -- that might not be the right word but just wanted to give you more food for thought.

Fun process! I think you are right to ditch classic and refined might be better than polished to keep your freedom. Ladylike or simply feminine is good. Vintage you sort of have going on already with your rock tees and some of your jewelry and other items. Kind of a crossover of vintage/rock I guess. Not sure about the punk - meaning I'm not sure how much of that you want in your look as I can't tell yet from your WIWs. To me punk is pretty dramatic over the top. And adventurous is probably not descriptive enough, unless you want something specific like the safari traveler or mysterious European spy adventure look or something.

Great points here. Of the more demure descriptors, I think I could ditch classic since when I do use a classic piece I tend to mix it with decidedly non-classic items. Refined and polished are very similar, I'll have to wrestle with those a bit to decide which one feels more "me." Ladylike seems very different to me than the others, because of the emphasis on femininity. And it could include vintage inspired, or maybe vintage doesn't even need to be mentioned... Although, I do want to keep that in mind when looking for new things because I really do want more vintage pieces in my wardrobe.

All of the Punk/rock/edgy, glam, or theatrical descriptors could probably be summed up into one or two. Adventurous I'd actually prefer to do away with, since this is what causes me the most stress and discomfort if I don't get it right. I'm slowly but surely learning that I'd rather have less variety and less stress than more variety and more stress lol

I think it's harder for creative, imaginative types to settle on something; everything excites you! So I agree with AM: Well done on refining. I think your bold spirit means lots of different styles look good on you, which probably makes it a challenge to refine!

I think you definitely need some idea of polished in there. I have picked that up from your posts for sure. There has to be something about layering too, because that seems like an essential part of your look, layering of textures or pieces together like that embroidered top you recently wore with all those great necklaces.

I'm running off to a meeting, but dropping in to say that a lot of your adjectives are similar (to my mind), such as ladylike, polished, refined, classic. So are they different ways of saying the same thing (and if so which feels most you)? Or are these really all different (and if so, what are the differences)? I could see "refined" as being a bit of a catch-all for those adjectives. Are you a refined rocker?

For the record, the "Punk Ballerina" outfit was a total fail in my mind, so that should not even be considered as a potential inspiration for style descriptors lol

Just the simple fact that I remember so vividly how odd and uncomfortable I felt is enough to steer clear of that outfit and not wear anything like it ever again!

The phrase itself is great, but the outfit was anything but. There, I think that's more clear :)

Initial purge planning post here.

Around the time of that post, I made a list of all the items I own, and it was a bit ridiculous:
99 tops, 48 of which were graphic tees
12 jackets
42 layering items (tank tops, cardigans, sweaters and camisoles - I think that might be a bit low, as I didn't actually list out all my sweaters, just guessed)
35 pairs of pants
23 skirts
13 day dresses + 4 formal or cocktail dresses
6 coats
30 pairs of footwear
I didn't count loungewear, just got rid of things that were stained or had holes.

So far, I've gotten rid of about 3-5 items from each category. I plan to get rid of one or two jackets, and a lot more tops. Right now I have about 15-20 items that have not yet been worn in the last 3 months, so I'm pushing to wear those each at least once and see how they feel.

Looking back at my style prior to this, it was all over the place. Not very defined, to the extent that the only descriptors I could come up with were:

Punk/rock/edgy

Eclectic

Scattered

Looking at outfits I've worn in the last three months, I'm finding a lot more sense of what I like and how to achieve that. These are a combo of both single-word descriptors and phrases I like when someone used it to describe me (or someone else whose style I admire!)I suppose you could say these are my aspirations:

Classic/vintage inspired

Adventurous

Refined

Polished

Edgy

Ladylike

Punk/rock/edgy

Glam

Rock Around the Edges

Sexy Librarian

Obviously there's a lot going on there still, and could be better refined. This is where I'd like your help! If you were to pick 4-5 words from that list, or even other words that aren't on my list, to describe my style, what would they be?

I also took some time to think about the physical qualities of items I really like, or what I want to obtain:
Texture - sparkle, leather, soft/fuzzy

Embroidery, beading, sequins

Large print designs, graphic patterns

Anything depicting animals, insects or flowers - particularly jewelry and/or cardigans and sweaters

My main goals for spring and summer are:
Light weight denim jacket or button shirt to use as a layering piece
2-3 pairs of shorts (I don't really have any I'm comfortable in, they are all a bit too short). I'd like colored denim.
Some loose, flowy tank tops to wear over leggings or shorts
Something leopard print, maybe pants or a top
Some lighter weight and color tights
Espadrilla wedges to replace my white strappy sandals that were old and stained and pretty much my only summer heeled shoe

So that's that. I think we are planning another trip to my favorite thrift store for the 3/$1 sale, and I feel much better about finding things I know I'll love this time around. The last trip was before all of my conscious development and planning, and I definitely got some things I shouldn't have. But hey, for 33c you can't go wrong right? Right!

I look forward to hearing any feedback, comments, opinions, suggestions etc. Thanks in advance!
