Marley, I like the sound of Margarita Fridays to unwind! We often do champagne Sundays :)
Kari and Aida, have fun wine tasting! I did go to one little winery when I lived in northern OR, along the Columbia River many moons ago. And I've gone to the El Dorado foothills to a few wineries but never to the big daddy of Napa, which is only 2 1/2 hours from my CA house. Someday . . .

Hard to choose teams because I really like both tea and wine! My morning routine involves first - a large glass of water, followed by a hot cup of green tea (which gives me a caffeine jolt MUCH stronger than I ever get from coffee - I mean, it is an immediate HIGH! Followed next by a cup of coffee - and I relish every single drop of that cup of coffee! In the evenings however . . . red wine - a girlfriend introduced me to the red blends about a year ago - and I love them! Also, really like syrahs! Didn't have any tonight - boo! Also, in the summers on warm Friday evenings we always make a pitcher of margaritas and sit outside and wind down from the week - so, we don't drink wine on that night. I am pretty much a tea and coffee drinker every morning, but I only drink wine maybe once a week - i'd rather eat my calories than drink them!

ETA - Denise - May I join your team?

Team Tea! I drink loads of tea (mostly green and white). Though I do like beer, coffee, and wine (in that order) and drink those as well, just not in loads ;)

Kari, if you plan a winery tour I'd love to join! Have you done the tours at Columbia/Chateu St. Michelle down in Woodinville? I think Whidbey also has several small wineries which would be fun to tour. Columbia's Syrah's are delicious, especially if you can find one that's a few years old; they age very well. The 2001-2003 reserve Syrah and Pinot Noir from Columbia are some of my favorite wines ever. Columbia is my favorite winery in general

I don't like tea or coffee (unless it's coffee ice cream) so it's Team Sparkling Water with Lemonade for me! And I rarely drink much alcohol (maybe a few sips of wine occasionally just to taste) so I'm on Team Pina Colada, preferably on a tropical beach!

Elisabeth, I've also noticed that the caffeine in tea (I alternate mainly between black and white tea and herbal tea, so I don't always have caffeine) doesn't strongly affect me. When I drink the teas with caffeine in it, I feel a slight "buzz" from being a little more alert, but I'm not noticeably drowsy on the days when I don't have it.

When I do try to drink coffee - I can do it if it's a highly sugared/flavored coffee, like a frappucino or a pumpkin spice latte - and I forget to ask for decaf, the caffeine hits me like a JOLT. Within a half hour I'm shaky and anxious, and feel very similar to the shaky, heart-palpitating reaction I get after using an asthma inhaler. It's very uncomfortable.

I can actually compare the difference in my reaction from drinking caffeinated tea vs. coffee to the gentle, pleasant, controlled buzz I get from sipping a glass or two of wine vs. slamming back a shot of hard liquor and very quickly getting inebriated, which I hate.
(Needless to say, I am NOT a shot drinker. Yuck.)

Kari, I think you're right about the parental (and probably cultural) influence affecting one's tea/coffee/wine drinking habits. I come from an alcohol-drinking family, but they were all about moderation. Being drunk was considered foolish and embarrassing, but regular alcohol consumption at mealtimes, and an appreciation for nice wines, was completely normal. So it seems weird to me not to have a glass of wine at dinner!

Interesting to note the strong aversions that some people have to coffee, beer and wine, but not to tea. It goes to show what potent drugs caffeine and alcohol are. There was a time I did not like the taste of coffee either (although I've always loved the smell), but started drinking it anyway in an effort to remain awake while cramming for exams (a common way to start, I should think!). Now I LOVE it. I started drinking beer in much the same way -- I didn't like the taste, but it was what everyone else at the table was drinking, and we'd order pitchers, so it was just easier -- and I really like beer now too. I suspect your first taste of beer and coffee is accurate, but as your brain gets accustomed to the drug in them, it overrides your taste buds and you start to like it! Because no amount of exposure to other, non-drug-containing beverages (like herbal tea) could make me a convert.

ETA: I know there's some caffeine in black tea, but not as much as coffee. And people do get hooked on black tea, too, but not (as it appears to me, though I could be wrong) as strongly as they get hooked on coffee.

Marlene, let's do it!

Mo, I've wondered that too. I grew up with my parents drinking dry red wine, which I like, and having no soda in the house - and I still don't drink soda.

But both of my parents also have always started the day with a cup of coffee, and despite living in the Seattle area for my entire life, I still do not like coffee (except for the scent.) But I liked the routine of my parents sitting in the kitchen sipping coffee and reading the paper in the mornings, and having something brewing that smells good, so I suppose that's what led me to be a tea drinker.

My dad also drinks beer occasionally, and it took me a VERY long time to enjoy beer at all - and there are still not very many types of beer that I like. My mom generally does not like white wine so we didn't have it in the house very often, but I've found some dryer whites that I enjoy.
Like my parents, I really don't like overly sweet wine.

I used to be a strictly tea girl, but started drinking coffee with DH. Now I can't live without the stuff. I drink a cup or two of coffee in the morning, tea without caffeine in the afternoon, and wine in the evening. If it came down to tea or wine, though, definitely TEAM WINE. I am on a Bordeaux kick at the moment, after a long Primitivo turned Chianti phase. I go in phases. I do love white wine in hot weather or with the right foods, but mostly I prefer red. I like a dry rose too once in awhile. or dry champagne--nothing like it. Delightful.

Interesting replies! Some of you noted what your family drank growing up. I wonder how that affects our developing tastes . . . both my mom and dad liked wine and coffee but I did not live with my mother growing up. My stepmom does not drink alcohol or coffee - strictly Diet Coke. But I don't drink soda. Nurture or nature? Hmmm.
For the record, I had both white and red last night because my early evening sipping wine was the light pinot grigio and then we decided on pizza for dinner, which called for a red! I often do that - a glass of white for a salad course, say, and then a glass of red to go with my entree. What can I say? Food and wine make me as happy as fashion!

Team Tea most definitely. With milk and no sugar. Until recently I was possibly drinking 10 cups of this a day. A few weeks ago I went cold turkey on tea and have since resumed a much more modest 3 mugs a day input!

I drink wine rarely, a bit ironic considering I too live in a wine region! I'll have a glass if someone brings some over for a meal - maybe 6 times a year? My taste is very unclassy - I like the sweet wines and port.

I love white wine (red, too, but it tends to give me a massive headache) - and the Niagara region of Canada makes some amazing wines, but I'm on Team Tea for sure! Love all kinds of flavoured, spicy teas like Bengal Spice and cinammon for pure pleasure on winter nights, and herbal teas for health reasons (especially green!)

Can there be a team coffee?

Between tea and wine, I'm team wine all the way -- I have a glass most nights, usually shiraz or malbec -- but I drink a lot more coffee than wine. I quite like tea as well, but it has to be proper English black tea and not any of the herbal ones that smell so promising but taste like wet potpourri.

Between wine and tea there is no contest.... TEA! I hate wine... sorry. I've tried to like it and just can't.

Team wine all the way! We are big Pinot Noir fans and have been accumilating quite a cellar from all the wine clubs we belong to.

Hwever,I do love my Sweet and Spicey tea on a cold day or evening.

Team Tea as I can no longer drink anything with carbs. I used to like a glass of wine with a meal when we went out and liked both reds and whites if they were not sweet.
I've recently discovered chai tea but like everything from the smoke-infused black teas to fruity white teas and all in between.
