Late to answer, but I did Susan Garrett’s Recallers program 8 years ago with my GSD. It was the course that changed him. He was almost unmanageable by the time I started and not my first GSD. You’ll get a lot from her online courses and when she opens enrollment I recommend signing up for the year long Recallers. We still play some of the games on rainy days or at the big box hardware stores and implement her training daily. Have fun.

I found a Canadian trainer, online, Susan Garrett. I binge watched her videos and really loved her method of working with dogs so I invested in a 4 month trial of something she calls “Home School the Dog”. She also has a program called “Recallers”, which was closed. So far I am loving it, puppy is learning, and I am following everyone’s tip to train recall as a priority.

Good advice, Brooklyn. The first thing I taught Garth after house training was recall. He is a pro now.

I think the most important part of training is recall training. Especially if you ever plan to let your dog off the lead in a public place. Being able to recall your dog instantly can save her from injury. We do lots of it with any new dog. Start with small distances and work your way up. Always make it fun: reward recall with a treat or toy or game. It helps with bonding too.

VERY EXCITING! :)

You must take your puppy for socialization classes. Can't stress enough how important that is!

Can't wait to see pics!

I only use positive reinforcement when I train my dogs. I like Pupford, Zak George and Kikopup.
When we got Garth he was 9 months old and had not been trained. Not even house trained! It was during the pandemic so puppy classes were not running.
I worked through the Zak George YouTube channel and it was so helpful.

Next week we are adopting a female Standard Poodle puppy. She comes from a family farm, small breeder, who had two unexpectedly large litters (8 pups each dog so 16 total). The breeder has been doing a great job of exposing the puppies to noises, car rides, touching sensitive areas, cuddling and holding, children, adults, horses, cats, and lots of other interesting types of ground surfaces both stable and a bit wobbly, plus puppy has had some swimming lessons. She will be 9 weeks old when I pick her up.

It’s been a long time since I’ve worked with a puppy and I am seeking good online training resources. I will eventually bring puppy to classes once they have updated vaccines complete, but believe it is a good idea to train basic skills first in a non-distracting environment and then they can practice them in the class with distractions.

Any suggestions for online resources, training programs, general advice and tips? I prefer positive reinforcement without negative if possible.
