Things have changed since COVID.

Gill, I'm a yes as long as the trainers are fashion - and not athletic. They need to look clean, crisp and neat. Match your outfit, and look pulled together. I saw lots of people sporting this look extremely well in the Netherlands a few months ago. High style quotient there!

Whatever you call them, I vote yes to this for a smart casual workplace -- especially post pandemic when we are kind of smartening up to the need to keep our feet healthy and happy.

If your workplace is anything like mine, there will be certain days or events where you need to amp it up a bit and wear a dressier shoe, but other days when this will be perfectly appropriate with a pulled together outfit.

Hahaha I ran into this word conflict while living in South Africa (more like British English) vs Canada (more like American English)

SA: pumps = what I call running shoes (sneakers)
court shoes = dressy shoes with highish heel and low vamp

Cda: pumps = dressy shoes with highish heel and low vamp

court shoes (if used at all) = the kind of sneakers you wear on a basketball or tennis court

Funny it hasn't turned up here before. I'm sure Angie has seen it all though.

Ok. Well the history of the pump shoe (plimsoll) is very interesting (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plimsoll_shoe).

And my thoughts on the question are: converse, yes; plimsoll pump as below, no… not enough visual heft, too much like indoor/outdoor slippers…

I've tried to do a photo on here, but I think because I only joined today that's why is doesn't let me.
Think easiest way of describing the Trainer/Pump is, that they're more or less exactly like the Converse All Star Low Trainer, except that the ones I was thinking of wearing are all Black and in Leather.

Hope this kind of explains it better for you.

A photo would be really helpful! I’m still not sure what style you’re referring to (in the US).

ETA: if I am interpreting correctly, you’re referring to a sneaker style? Example below in my Find. If so, sneakers are trending with all kinds of trousers.

Hi Liz,

I'm in the UK, so your sneaker/trainer thought is exactly what I was meaning.

Your Find in the UK, is what we call a Court Shoe - amazing how we all have different names for an item.

I have no idea what a canvas lace-up pump could possibly be. Is it some kind of sneaker (trainer)? if so, yes, you could wear them with trousers.

Just so you know why I'm so confused, I'm in the US and we use the word pump to refer to a formal, dressy shoe with a heel and a fairly low vamp -- the find below is a pump with a block heel.

What does everybody think about wearing black leather trainer pumps with check tapered trousers?

Work in Office, smart casual dress code, have worn both trousers previously with loafer shoes.
But at the age of 42, my feet are starting to feel the autumn cold, was thinking about trainer pumps so I could wear sock liners to keep my feet warm.
