Aida is brilliant! Thanks for the shoutout Lisa.....I never imagined my casual weekend look would *inspire* anyone, but this just goes out to show us all that inspiration can come from anyone & anywhere!

I really like all your finds. I think A-line skirts have a lot of potential, though I have to admit that I have only a couple of those. Most of my skirts are pencil/straight cut, though I do have several knit options that are very comfy to wear all day long.

I also think you should take a look at Ginger's WIWs. She wears A-line skirts as well as flared skirts more often than me.

PS: Coincidentally, this is what I'm wearing today. It's not luxe, but it's polished and comfy enough for all-day-at-home.

Lisa's- love this post. Your summer plan is perfect. I need a plan instead of let me buy all the cute shoes and stripes I can find.

Lisa - I can't do long shorts either, I don't know why in particular but they look all shades of wrong on me. I think it must be something to do with being short waisted?

I love an A line skirt, in particular with a heeled sandal. Because I prefer not to tuck I then prefer a top designed to sit over the waist but not too long.

My recent major YLF realisation was regarding short sleeves. On a thread looking for dresses Janet showed us sleeves straight across at the bust versus shorter angled ones. It made me realise what to look for and what not to look for.

Suz - you do the long short look brilliantly ! I just feel fat in them . Not sure why. Proportion thing likely , and too specific for my abstract eye

Like Brooklyn, my long over lean in summer is tube skirt with tunic or longer top. But I agree, the proportions are totally off somehow with shorts. On my body, anyway. It's not impossible; it just doesn't give at all the same effect.

That skirt Brooklyn linked to is so fab!

I'm going to give A lines another try. Fabrication might be key.

Una - lol, fallíng out of our tree. That's me , alright. Jeans don't really happen for me between May and Sept - it's usually too hot, and I appreciate the break from them. Must look for tunic-ish tops though .

Brooklyn - you are one person here who wears this silhouette perfectly . Actually, you're just perfect, period I hear you about fabrication , and denim is not one fabric I'll entertain for this look. Doesn't tend to lay flat down the front etc. I really love the skirt you've pictured above, and how perfect is it for spring , summer, and right into fall! I need one , asap!!

unfrumped - you're absolutely right, and for me it will be neutrals and maybe one or two patterned pieces, max. A lot of colour , or even a variety of a few colours makes me feel uncomfortable. But switching the perception of high and low contrasts is a very good idea .

Yes, long over lean can be frumpy in summer if the Bermuda shorts are the wrong length - to my eye at least. I guess I don't really wear true Bermudas - mine are like 7" in length, above the knee by a few inches at least. Or truly just above the ankle bone crops (I can't wear the shorter versions). But they must be slim, not gaping or flared at that spot on the thigh. For me at least.

This is great Lisa. I am also inspired by YLF - I am wearing cuffed jeans today in the same style as you and Aida!
Just a couple of thoughts on the A line skirt. I had some success this year with sports skirts. They are a skirt with short tights underneath. I buy mine from an Australian franchise but the U.S. Site is here (I know you are in Canada but I could not find a Canadian site). I got the happy skirt in black. It is a lightweight poly. I am usually anti poly for summer but I find it quite wearable in the heat (and no chafing with the tights). It is comfortable for dog walking, gardening and household stuff but still looks nice.
http://www.skirtsports.com/pro.....d-dresses/
I would be careful of denim and heavy cotton fabrications. I bought a heavy cotton utility skirt at the beginning of last summer as a shorts alternative and it ended up feeling stiff and uncomfortable and creasing a lot. I recently bought the A line skirt in the find below (this is for our fall/winter). It is viscose and it feels a lot more fluid and comfortable than the utility skirt. I would have thought cotton was a better choice than viscose for summer but I was wrong. So just something to keep in mind. :)
Good luck with your summer uniform!

Suz - this type of skirt really works for me. I can wear it down low on my hips, which doesn't always work with a pencil skirt - which also tends to skew too office-y for me. I also have that body shape that works with an a-line; I just "forgot" about that silhouette and it never registered in my small brain as a good option anymore. Well, it is!

Great musings!

I hear you on not liking color, but if you would like to focus on some tried and true silhouettes but look different, then one way to "work" a silhouette that you find flattering and comfortable is by flipping the color scheme rather dramatically. So say you have a black skirt with a white top but then "flip" to a khaki skirt with an olive top, and maybe flip the accessory colors as well. Footwear could have a similar effect--very different in nude-toned footwear vs. black (on bare or nude-hose legs). Then I think people "react" to the color more than realizing it's the same silhouette. This would be even more dramatic if someone wore red one day, for example, vs. soft gray neutrals another. I think that is one of the things Ms.Mary has going on--so much color, and great color.
I'm thinking maybe not even just color but color contrast--a low-contrast, tonal outfit gives a softer vibe than a sharp B&W even if you wore the exact same top & bottom style. So I believe you could do this with neutrals, but expand the number of neutrals and how you combine them.

Una - so what's your summer version of long over lean? Why do I feel like an extra in Flashdance in cropped leggings?

Fabulous, Lisa. I love skirt #2 especially. An A-line has such a retro appeal. I remember my mother wearing them so well in the 70s..she always looked put together and cool in those skirts.

I find them tricky sometimes on my body but I agree that a skirt is much more finished looking than a pair of shorts and more professional.

Love your realizations. Range for summer may be different than for winter. And Aida has good insights as usual -- what counts as range for you will be different than from Mary, who relies so strongly on colour.

texstyle - you're right ..long over lean can work in summer, but somehow I find it less appealing to me then than in winter. Somehow it loses it's edge in summer, I think . I'm also not a huge fan of slim longer shorts - because it brings me back to those horrible years when I used to wear them as part of a suit. Yikes! Just a look I've never been able to wear comfortably. I'm now also remembering a day a few summers ago when I wore a pair of bermuda denim shorts from the GAP - and my husband , who was with me, turned and asked " what the ---- are you wearing?" I like it on others though, and it appeals to me in pictures, but on me - nope. Can't rid myself of the frump factor.

Thanks for articulating your thought process. Aida is so insightful and I will now muse on the concept of "range" too.

GREAT skirts! I love this style, but alas have no waist anymore....I will look forward to seeing how you style this look in warmer weather.

Oh my what an insightful loud thinking lisap.

I echo alaskagirl 'a echo --- and Thankyou for being my brain too. Though I am JUST starting my journey here and from what I have read at YLF in last few months, I had a lot of information sitting and angled in my head. Your writings/musings/loud thinking is actually really really helping me sort my thoughts.

So I bow down to you, milady!!!

Great post lisap!

I wonder though - several people seem to say it was not possible but is it really not possible to do long over lean in summer? Why not do a long sleeveless or short sleeved tunic over slim Bermuda shorts or light weight crops? Couldn't that work? I think it would for me if I could just find the right summer tunics (I have the slim shorts).

Nicely done lisap. Reading this post comes at the end of a long day and my brain is mush, but I love that you have reflected back how you have become inspired, and I find the idea of range very very interesting.
Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Woohoo! This is probably all the analysis you need to move forward with this (which I know is a good thing ^^), and it's excellent. Thanks for the shout out, and I'm so happy that something I said resonated so strongly <3

That idea of "range" is going to manifest a little differently for you than it does for Mary, I think. Mary's range tends to be color/pattern. Since you're less variable there I think yours will be more in fabrication and subtler design details. So, say, a mix of cropped pants: tuxedo striped, sailor buttons, linen, silk, ankle length, kick-crop length, tonal pattern, one colorful pair for days you're feeling wild, skinny, slim BF, etc.

Really liking your summer formula. And the example skirts you've shown are a great illustration of how the same basic skirt silhouette can come across very differently depending on fabrication and subtle design details; and of course, color/pattern, will make the biggest change. In addition to the tees, maybe some linen button-up shirts and light rayon blouses would be a good mix-up for the top half when you want to go a little dressier.

I'm excited for you! I hope you'll share how the process progresses.

This is so wonderful! It makes total sense.

Those skirts are brilliant. This is pretty much how I dressed for 6 months of the year once I grew out of my high school denim shorts and hadn't yet discovered athletic skorts. Go you!

"Range" is such a great concept; I'm glad you picked up on that. I've had some similar nagging feeling that my short-skirt-over-tights look has zero range for warm weather. Just like your long-over-lean. Thankfully I have several other looks to fall back on, but it's a fact that that formula is cold weather only.
