I like it Angie, but I'm kinda over rust these days! At this point I'm ready to chuck nearly everything that's not black in my closet.
But if I do that, I'll *hate* black in 6 months

Well...back to the drawing board :/ I tried it this am, and DH didn't like it. First he said it was rednecky (probably cause too much like a hunting vest), then he said it reminded him of the 80s. Definitely Not my favorite decade for- well anything! I remembered Marty McFly and looked up a gif and yup, dead on :/
Praying for a warm day!

Definitely no jumping- but yay to longer in the back as a rule for me!

I did get a rust one yesterday, at Kohls of all places. And believe it or not, the clerk didn't harass me about their credit card or rewards! It felt warm after a few minutes in the fitting room, so shoukd be ok. Really I would have preferred black, but they didn't have it in my size :/

I am wowed by this combination and also by the fact that you are about to perform it! In any weather. Amazing! I hope you get some pictures of the events! It sounds really fun.

I also hope you find your puffer vests. I think the main differences between (some) fashion or other gear puffer vests and the ones Angie showed might be the degree of fittedness; the presence or absence of hoods; and perhaps the fill type. The riding specific ones might have different pockets, etc. and some might also be a slightly longer length in the back because you would be leaning a bit forward for certain activities like jumping.

Angie, what's the difference between those and a regular puffy vest?
*ponders entire equestrian capsule...looks at farm real estate listings....*
I did check 2 farm stores and a thrift store this am. I tried on these:
https://www.tractorsupply.com/.....61655199-1
Kinda lighter weight than I want, but I did like it.
https://www.tractorsupply.com/.....85851799-1
This one is a maybe- but want to see other options.
They had a puffer vest but it was Very bulky. Didn't bother to try it on.
There is a tack shop out near Dover, which had some body protector vests but $$$.
As far as a hat- I will have a helmet, so that's sorted!

Today, a fashionable puffer vest would be a Summer's day item for me, when it's cool in the morning - like a denim jacket.

When I rode horses, I wore a body warmer in the Winter - what you call a vest! Absolutely standard attire and still is! See pics :)

Late to the party, but I would say a puffer vest will be warm enough given you are doing to be doing a physical activity ... but I would keep your extremeties as warm as possible too; warm socks, hat, and gloves when you are not using your hands to shoot!

We had a similar temperature last saturday for a dressage clinic. We were riding in an outdoor ring, under a very cloudy sky, and I ended up wearing only my lightweight puffer vest over a thermal baselayer.
I hardly ever feel cold when schooling a horse (activating one's core keeps so warm!) and I generally add a fleece jacket under the puffer vest when the temperature drops down to ~37F (I still mostly ride outside, the indoor ring at my stables being too small for my taste).
I wear a regular puffer jacket instead of a sleeveless one only in very cold temperatures (~25F) for situations when I'm a more passive rider - such as for trail rides.

Hope you'll enjoy your horseback archery clinic!

Instead of a scarf, for activity like this I wear a buff. Much more compact and stays in place. Bonus: it can double as an impromptu face mask, headband, or even handkerchief in a pinch! I always have an extra in my day pack.

I looked up riding vests, but don't think it would arrive before the event. Hoping to find something local today. Sounds like a puffer vest is a good option- so wish me luck!
I wouldn't feel comfortable with a scarf. It could be windy and catch on the bow string or spook the horse!
Re gloves- this is the type I wear https://www.amazon.com/JKER-TE.....#038;psc=1
The index, middle, and ring fingers pull the string. Fingerless gloves could be painful!

That sounds awesome!

I prefer quilted vests over fleece ones — but I’m often wearing them for hiking and the like, and fleece ones caught every little errand leaf and twig. I also feel like puffer styles are more breathable.

I echo everyone’s advice about lightweight layers. I’d wear a hat too. And I agree that temps in the 40s in the sun are a different animal than the same temps in cloudy/windy conditions or even just the shade. I’d come prepared with as much warmth as you need, and a little lightweight backpack to stow layers as you remove them.

Do fingerless gloves work for archery? I do find that they help keep my hands a bit warmer than no gloves at all, but hands and feet are the parts of me I actually need to be concerned about (Reynauds).

Boy that’s tough to me. Because sometimes 45 feels cold to me, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes I’m hot in my jacket and cold without it. If it’s windy, fleece wouldn’t work for me, I know that. Actually, I don’t own any fleece because it’s the wind that bothers me most…

Gloves probably not. I use a finger guard on my right hand (that could be awkward with reins) and an arm guard on my left. Plus I assume I'll have my quiver round my waist too. And my normal full sized recurve bow.

I'm not sure exactly what the event will look like/how many people/how experienced they are. I have lots of experience with both, just not in combination! It's all day, so probably some ground shooting, some riding, and some combined. The teacher has 2 horses (paso finos!!!!), not sure if some of the regular stable horses will be used- or if some of us will have to sit and watch sometimes.

Coat wise I could use a thin puffer or a fleece jacket- the fleece is shorter. I just don't know if they'd be in my way to shoot. I have a couple thermal tops too.

In my defense, I signed up for this a couple months ago (horse archery- Take My Money!) and I wasn't thinking November=probably cold. Maybe I'll get lucky and the weather app will lie and it'll be 75+ like it was today?

Horseback archery sounds so cool!!

I've actually never had a fleece vest, but have always had a down vest or two (my entire adult life anyway). A thin/ultralight puffer vest, something along the lines of Uniqlo packable down or Patagonia Nanopuff, should be comfortable as an outer layer in 40s-50s F if you have a reasonably warm layer underneath (fleece, merino sweater, etc) in addition to a baselayer. You can always shed a layer if you (or the day) start to warm up. A puffy does such a good job trapping body heat and blocking wind compared to fleeces and knits, it's nice to have on hand for an instant boost of warmth even if you don't wear it all day.

The thing I love about puffer vests is that, without the sleeve bulk of a jacket, they're easy to layer under just about any coat. And they don't look as out of place indoors as a puffer jacket! I fell in love with them back in my organic farm/produce department days, jobs where I was in and out of cold storage, but also often wrist deep in water, so jacket sleeves were a no-go. A hoodie with cuffed sleeves that would stay pushed up, plus a synthetic-fill puffer vest, was the perfect combo.

Will you be able to wear some sort of glove? When I rode horses, I definitely needed gloves for shoulder seasons; you can't just stuff your hands in your pockets to warm them up!

I would wear a vest in conjunction with other layers, such as a capilene fleece pullover and a shell, and of course long underwear. I have a 60/40 coat with a wool lining that is good for wind and some precipitation. Activities might be birding, hiking, or dog walking. If I got too warm, I could take the vest off. Plus some vests are warmer than others. Here it’s not just the temperature but also whether the sun is out. 45 sounds kind of cold to me, but I don’t know how warm you get horseback riding or doing archery. But it really sounds so interesting! I hope you post some pictures.

When do you wear (what temperature) puffer and fleece vests?

I'm going to a horseback archery clinic, and it's only supposed to be about 45 degrees that day There are both indoor and outdoor rings at that stable, not sure which it'll be in.

Anyway I'm thinking a vest would be good to keep my arms free, but is that warm enough? Normally I wouldn't ride (or shoot) when it's that cold out, but I may in the future.

If you wear gear type vests like that, what activities do you use them for? How cold is too cold to wear them?
