Ah, yes, the massaging of statistics is a well-known issue. Very few people even understand what medications mean when they advertise a certain percentage reduction in something. And then whether that something really affects disease in a meaningful way (say, cholesterol levels and heart attacks or stroke).

And I absolutely agree that eating disorders require a mental component. Not everyone exposed to X, Y or Z will develop an eating disorder, but those who are susceptible would be more likely to. Likewise, abuse alone is not enough to trigger schizophrenia in the average individual, but with certain genetic components (which we still are struggling to define), it increases the risk.

That said, abuse isn't good in ANY scenario, whether it triggers schizophrenia or not. And neither is photo-shopping to the extremes we see today. Even if it cannot be proven to contribute to anorexia or bulimia, it is not good for anyone to be constantly exposed to unrealistic images of what a certain group of people should look like. At the very least, it promotes poor self-esteem by people never being able to achieve certain body proportions, airbrushed skin, vivid eye color, etc.

So my question is, does it matter? It seems rather pedantic to be arguing about whether photoshopping directly causes eating disorders when the overall harm it does to people in general is fairly well-understood.

Oh... but I do think ‘reading is dangerous.’ One only ever reads what one is interested in... the echo chamber so exacerbated by the advent of the Net. Your mental landscape defines your choices... not in your landscape, not an option for you... Makes me think of Toni Morrison’s ‘Bluest Eye’ - and fixating on having blue eyes...

The problem of interpreting studies and statistics runs very deep. You can have had quite a bit of education and still not get it. If I run a study and say I found a 30% genetic component to X disease, but I have no idea what the genes behind disease X are... lots of very educated people will think everyone with disease X, that 30% of their condition is genetically influenced... which if you think about it has no meaning at all. What it means is the vast majority (70%), there was zero evidence of any genetic influence. A lot of people don’t understand the difference between correlation and causation either. Also, ‘everybody,’ including dogs, dies of heart disease... going way back, to ancient Egypt even...

I’m not at all for the photoshopping. It’s misleading advertising. But to say it’s the reason people develop anorexia or bulimia is ridiculous. That said, I think they need to seek out models who have a healthy body weight and quit the photoshopping so people see what’s real, not what’s cooked up. I think that would be a step in the right direction.

BC, I really liked that article.

To me the point is that by usuing perhaps the wrong terms, we actually under-appreciate the harm done— because the harm is done in a “ smaller” way to a larger % if people, or more pervasively, or subtley. It also lets defenders and advertisers hone in on the error and divert concern.
I like rachylou’s analogy and there are many others, where loose connections or poor “ science” may be well- meaning but can interfere with the real message or the real needs. For example, every day the news reporters use terms, statistics, percentages and other statements that just make me cringe, as a scientist, while the general public just eats it up.
Also you could see how lots of people would criticize this author as though she’s “ for” the photo- shopping and again, it’s , “ words matter”.
