Thank you for the reminder! I went through this last summer and had to replace a handful of shoes that became too tight. I am maintaining a smaller set of shoes now since a couple pairs that I purged had rarely been worn

Yes, and if you happen to have pleather shoes, and haven't worn them in a while, definitely wear them a bit around the house before wearing them out and about. Two! pairs of shoes my mom had and hadn't worn since before the pandemic literally disintegrated in the meantime. She took them out of the closet without realizing this and wore them to the doctor's office. She had to be given a pair of hospital slippers to return home in! She said the nurses were cool about it and said it happened to more than one person. :)

Ditto what April said. Expensive comfort shoes can be great for a while but become unwearable as quickly as any others when our feet change. One hopes for longevity but there's no guarantee. Good reminder to bite the bullet. One year I had to get rid of almost all my shoes and start over!

Haha I hard agree - I envy people who say they can hold onto the same pairs of shoes for years, then rotate them back in whenever they feel like it. Even if that style of shoe is back en vogue once more, my feet likely wouldn't agree when that time comes, lol...

Same goes for your clothes (I firmly believe a closet cleanout isn't complete until you've tried *everything* on - yes, even scarves)!

Yep- I finally passed on my snow boots that were tight but doable before. Luckily my mom's neighbor fit them and loved them!

Ugh, shoes. I LOVE shoes but have grown so frustrated with them.

Why aren't expensive "comfort" shoes always comfortable? Why are the comfort shoes that made me happy last year now awful? Why doesn't any manufacturer understand that MANY people who need a wide size up front due to foot issues still have ordinary width feet everywhere else?

Love the idea of revisiting ALL THE SHOES every year. Seems to be the only way.

Excellent suggestion, Lesley. My comfort level has changed drastically over the last few years. I have kept a couple of pairs of boots that I love but can't wear. Not sure what I think is going to happen.

Jenn, I got through three pregnancies with the same shoe size and thought I was safe--my youngest is now 9! But suddenly I find myself at least a half size up and with an arthritic big toe. I found myself suddenly worried at Runcarla & Janet's stories (should I keep them around then, for when my feet shrink?) but I think the correct answer is definitely Angie's--our comfort level changes too. When we have shoes in our closet that don't fit or feel good, time to pass them on, and don't worry about future theoreticals.

I’ve noticed what Janet identified - and recently a half size down from my long term regular size is a more comfortable fit.

I did a major shoe cull a couple years ago, maybe at the beginning of Covid. As I worked more from home, I got rid of all but 1 pair of heels/pumps, which were workhorses for years for me as a professional woman who came up in the 1980's and 90's. Mostly the pointy toe, stiletto's (and when I say stiletto, I mean pointy heel, not necessarily a 3 or 4" high heel) were banished from the closet. Painful workhorses it turns out, mostly because of changing feet with age, and a decreasing tolerance for discomfort. I won't wear an uncomfortable shoe any more (thanks Angie, seriously your "permission" to style up in comfy shoes? world changing.) Now my shoe capsule is comfortable, contemporary, and outfit appropriate.

I am having the opposite problem. Shoes and boots that were comfortable a few years back are now slipping off my heels worse than ever. I guess our feet can lose padding/volume as we age? But again, that just reinforces the point of trying these unworn items on!

YES! This is not uncommon. Feet change, and so do our comfort levels.

I try on all my shoes at the start of each season to make sure they are STILL comfy.

This goes double if you’ve been pregnant since you bought some of your shoes. Our feet definitely change shape with age, but mine went up a full size after my pregnancy.

This will likely be a "duh" for many of you who keep up with your closets.

I have long prided myself an excellent closet editor, although this weekend I realized I never really pare down my shoes, with the exception of when a pair obviously wears out or I am just obviously done with. This is because I like to think of the shoe collection as a lifetime collection that I have built over decades, and I like to trot out an old pair every now and then.

Well, this weekend I was rearranging my closet and tried to decide whether I should keep a pair of shoes I haven't worn in years. In thinking about it, I slipped into them. Lo and behold, I couldn't even get my foot in there! This led to trying on several other pairs from that era, and none of them fit! Easiest clean-out ever.
