Haha the hijack is all good - I don't think we'll get more comments on this post unless someone tries out the SS 'trouser jeans' & reports back.

I think I only ever received such catalogues (in the UK) if I had shopped with a particular retailer & forgot to until the 'marketing by post' option. Your items you linked seem like nicely elevated basics, but I suppose what counts as 'missy/ mumsy' will depend on not only how you style an item, but your preconceived notions around particular clothing too (including trouser jeans & 'mom' jeans - to bring it back to the thread topic lol).

Oh my yes! We get tons of catalogs we don’t sign up for. There are lots of jokes that revolve around the solicitation to join the American Association of Retired Persons that arrives on, I think, the 60th birthday. Peoples’ demographic info is bundled in lists that are sold, just like companies sell your data after you visit their websites. But you can sign up to not have the random catalogs tossed your way. I always did that to conserve resources, but I occasionally flipped through my mom’s stack when I visited my parents’. She saved the good ones & spared me the hassle.

I’m glad the Soft Surroundings bit made you laugh. Some might call it ageist, but it is pretty clear that what she is laughing at is not the women at all, but that the catalog authors have such a specific set of expectations. I do agree with others that SS items rarely have natural fibers any more. I’m not shopping them anymore, because of that and now I realize their labor practices probably aren’t good. These are the last items I got from them. The striped shirt gets lots of positive comments when I post outfits with it in the forum. The tunic is now my pool cover-up. The belt was for a nephews wedding.

I think the author of the article you linked to uses “Mumsy” for the look I think of as “Missy”.

This thread hijack is over. You may now return to your previously scheduled discussion of the SS jeans.

Oh @Angie I think the link you posted is incomplete/ broken?

@cjh sure, I'll take a look! I only used the term 'trouser jeans' here because that's what the brand uses - we called them 'denim trousers' growing up in the UK

@fashintern Haha the one thing that worried me in that article - do American women really just get clothes catalogues they never signed up for in the post? Your article reminds me of the author mentioning in this article declaring UK certain brands to be 'mumsy' (I suppose that means 'frumpy') - I've always dressed in more comfy & soft clothes though, despite not having any children lol: http://www.thomasinnewtonimage.....ing-mumsy/

@rachylou @Joy I'm not actually personally familiar with the brand at all (seem to be USA/ Canada based) but when flipping through I did find the price to be quite high for what appeared to be mostly synthetic fibres. I'm guilty of shopping from 'comfortable' brands like SeaSalt, but that's because they offer 100% cotton at reasonable prices. As for silk pillowcases @Joy I've had surprisingly good luck on Etsy!

LOL. I bet their catalog only because I order gift certificates for a niece that loves Soft Surroundings. Too many leggings and polyester for me. The silk pillow cases I got from them have been replaced by their brand with something inferior that is more appropriate for a pillow cover under the case.

More like jeans than trousers, but lovely nonetheless. Thank you :)

I own and enjoy wearing several pieces from soft surroundings. I am “a woman of a certain age”. I own that too, and I enjoy this parody of the catalog, even while I sigh over that cozy white gown being all sold out. These captions just crack me up. https://suburbanturmoil.com/th.....013/01/14/

Found this pair of trouser jeans on my internet sleuthing adventures & thought I'd share them here, for those of you looking for a new pair:
https://www.softsurroundings.c.....ser-jeans/

I haven't tried them myself but reviewers seem to like them for the fabric, fit & colour range (a plain mid mid wash, mid & darker blue washes washes with fading, & white).

They do however, seem to have quite a long rise/ high waist (even in the petites sizes); at least this means full length jeans for those of you that want them

If anyone does try them out, please do report back to help others decide whether to get them too They're not quite a dark enough wash for me (still looking for my own trouser jean replacement), but I'll be more than happy to admire them on others!
