Suz, you are presented with so many different surface conditions! The surface I deal with is water and oil, not snow and ice. So my report was more for those conditions, not yours. I can't even begin to think about all of the different surfaces you need to plan around in the Great North.

Those Blondo soles look fairly good for slip resistance, I will consider that brand.

This is fabulous, Denise! Thank you so much!

FWIW, I think it's also worth pointing out that what works to reduce slips on wet and slick pavement may be different than what is needed for snow, and what's different on ice, and some treads work well for one, but not the other.

Take my new Kinetic sneakers from Sorel. These work great on wet pavement. No problems. But try them on slick ice -- as I had to do in freezing rain the other night -- and it's a different story. I was "skating home." But -- wait for it. Yesterday, I walked in them on a thin scrim of snow over top of that same ice. And they performed MUCH better than my friends' fancy hiking boots! I wasn't slipping at all. So slip resistance has much to do with specific conditions.

Re Blundstones -- be careful. Styles vary. The Chisel toe dress boot is super slippery especially on snow and ice -- it's no good for winter conditions. However, some of their other styles work pretty well. There are some with lug soles that are said to be a bit better. I am also wearing these, below, this week, and again, they are working quite well on very icy, snowy roads.

I do not find Ecco sneakers slip resistant at all. The 7s are a bit better than the 8s, but definitely not good for truly slippy pavement. And the 8s are slippy for sure.

La Canadiennes tend to be pretty good in wintery conditions, for obvious reasons. But styles vary. The three below (different levels of dressiness) have all worked for me.

As for the Uggs -- well, they might be good in wet conditions -- and they are "okay" in new snow -- but the Adirondacks below are (for me, at least) pretty much useless in ice or slippy snow. I am frustrated with these boots. They are gorgeously warm but not safe. And they increased my plantar fasciitis. I still have them but don't really choose them except for deep snow.

My Blondo Elvinas are excellent for wet rainy conditions on pavement. I have not tried them on snow or ice.

And -- sad to report -- my Paul Green's, which are super comfy and decent on slick pavement, also cause me to fall the other day because a stone got caught in the sole and made it wobbly and I tripped. I wasn't hurt badly enough to want to get rid of them but I am going to step carefully in these shoes for sure.

I like my trail shoes for trail conditions (and maybe snow) but they can be a bit slippy on pavement.

I'm required to wear athletic or other slip resistant shoes at work. Which is mind boggling, since many many athletic shoes actually have slippery soles. I think my dress code at work (all black except for a red craptastic polyester shirt, non slip shoes) is why I've been gravitating towards extreme heels and whites/creams for off duty

Another thanks for pulling this together. I love my Uggs for dog walking and plane travel. I have the ones below that are slightly more refined than the classics. They truly are ridiculously comfortable and I have not slipped even when my darling dog thinks there is a dangerous squirrel about to attack us and lunges out towards it.

I agree, YLF is the best ever.
The Birks are Boston super grip. I read reviews from kitchen workers saying that they were non-slip even when walking through oil. As I said, the soles were squeaky but I will try them again if I can find them. They also have the Tokio in super grip.

Thanks Denise. I recently had slip resistant soles and heels put on some Frye boots. At $75, it really adds to the cost of the boots. But I’d much rather not slip. I’m amazed at how many good shoe makers (like Frye) insist on using slippery leather soles.

Wow, so much good information! And I thought it was just going to be a few of us who would be interested.

JAileen -- I too wear the clogs with backs. But the Swedish Hasbeens are calling out to me... as long as I can confirm they are slip resistant.

Kellygirl — You are right that we need to pay attention to falling when we get older. But young and 40s aged people fall too. Of the slip and falls I’ve had among my workers, the first was early 40s, the next was mid 20s, another was mid 60s, and the last was mid 70s. All of them female. Our bones are fragile. One man had a slip and fall, mid 40s, he was a customer.

Vildy — I had forgotten about Shoes for Crews, I knew they had a catalog. They have a good website. Thanks so much for the suggestion — they are reasonably priced so I can afford to buy shoes for my 20 employees (way cheaper than a workers comp claim and missed work, having to hire replacements for injured workers, etc.). And — those Safe T Step slip resistant shoe covers are interesting! They remind me of those shoe covering rain “boots” of yore.

Angie — That is so sweet of you to thank me. It’s really my pleasure to pontificate about slip resistant shoes, as I said I’m obsessed. And yes you need Uggs. I love my Uggs, on my second pair. Remember the Uggs I got in Seattle at the outlet center, November 2015? That was some crazy rain!

Inge — I usually wear the classic Uggs, which aren’t described as slip resistant, but Uggs have a new sole called “Treadlite” which is described as providing “increased cushioning, durability and traction on both wet and dry surfaces.” I feel quite secure in mine. The ones you linked to look even better.

Rachylou — I have had a number of my employees say their Payless slip resistants were great! Too bad they couldn’t make it.

April — I couldn’t work the link, are you talking about steel toe shoes? And yes, I don’t mind a mannish shoe, I wear Docs!

Laura — Yes, I’m going to try Shoes for Crews, thanks for the suggestion.

Joy — You point out something important — how there are shoes better for water slip resistance, and those for ice. I’m talking about shoes for wetness. We don’t have ice here anymore, it was 78 today, and it’s still February.

Sterling — Thank you so much for your kind words!

MntsoftheMoon — Yay for Uggs.

Rebekahphoto — Ah yes, Blundstones! I have heard they are good. I kind of like their chunky vibe. As for Eccos, I was hoping they were slip resistant but I don’t think so. Here’s some information I found on an Amazon page about Ecco sneakers like those you are showing.

“While tested to posses normal slip-resistant qualities, ECCO does not officially rate them as slip-resistant footwear.” By ECCO MANUFACTURER on June 22, 2018

Style Fan — Off to check out Saute Mouton with built-in ice grippers! Thanks for the suggestion.

Joyce B — Birkenstocks — interesting, never thought they made work shoes. Thanks for the suggestion, and I really appreciate you saying it’s nice to have me back. YLF is simply the best social media environment there is.

Glory — Rate My Treads is a great resource for snow and ice slip resistant footwear. I spent some time on it, thank you for introducing us to this site.

Zaeobi — I hear you on the lack of slip resistant sandals. Have you tried Naot? I thought these were cute and the soles look good.

https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/n.....%20leather

Here’s another brand ”Bionica” I had never heard of, and they claim slip resistance. Good price.

https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/b.....ch-persona

Avicennia -- I will be on the lookout for slip resistant pumps. If you add "slip resistant" to any search term in Shop.Nordstrom.com or Amazon.com, you will get quite a few results. Haven't tried this at Zappos.

I have had soles added to leather soles and they apply well, even when not new. I tried adding a new sole to a rubber soled bootie that I loved and it didn't work at all. And you need to hunt for a cobbler that has the right slip resistant soles to add on.

This is incredibly useful CocoLion. I need to avoid slips as much as possible. As I write I’m sitting on the floor of my closet going through my shoes. Many of my shoes are OK to quite good. But not my two favorite pumps which have leather soles. However I just ordered duplicates of those pumps. I will immediately take the new duplicates to the cobbler and have them resoled. I’ve been told that worn shoes don’t take new soles well, so the older shoes will have to go to the trash. My light weight Clark’s travel sneakers will also have to go — all my other Clark’s seem OK. Most critically from now on, the tread of shoes will be as important as comfort and style. I’m very grateful to you Cocolion for providing this information and to Angie for raising the issue.

I have tried to DIY a grippy sole in the past by scoring it with surface level incisions (not all the way through the soles, of course) with varying success. Angie's post made me realise that adding slip resistant soles to shoes is apparently a thing (who'd have known?) but I haven't tried it yet.

I've had good luck in my FitFlops & Hush Puppies so far, but we don't get snow here. It's very difficult to find SANDALS with grippy soles to deal with hot, subtropical typhoons (let alone shoes) so I'll be duplicating my Hush Puppies Bodyform ones forever, lol!

What a great thread.
I can also recommend Rate my treads - they have researched and tested quite a few boots. They may include shoes as well but I’m not sure.
Living in the very snowy north this year I purchased a pair of yak tracks. Not a thing of beauty but excellent for walking and hiking.

This is a great thread, very useful. Thank you for sharing the non-slip shoes.
Birkenstock makes some slip resistant mules for kitchen work. The soles have small repetitions. The reviews are good but they are squeaky when you walk. I returned mine but maybe I should buy them again.
I am glad you started this topic. It is very nice to see you back on YLF.

Thank you for this information. For the winter my Saute Mouton boots have built-in ice grippers. I can flip them over as needed. The trick is remembering I have done this when I come inside. They do work great. I am going to look at the Dansko ones for non-winter wear.
You are so right about how hard it is to find a shoe with style and a slip-resistant sole.

I have Merrell hiking boots and sneakers with Vibram soles. Both were bought at REI and are not supposed to slip. They come with a warning not to wear them indoors because the grit in the soles that keeps them from slipping on ice can scratch floors. By now the Vibram sole is supposed to be available for a cobbler to put on any shoe.

If you don't mind a heavy, mannish black shoe, the ones that chefs are required to wear in culinary school are slip resistant and will also protect your foot should you drop a knife or spill boiling water. Bonus. :)
