I am happy it feels natural to want to share this day with you.&nbsp;</p> </p> <p>The more I think of it, the more I'm mesmerised by the tradition of the school cones. I hope to share a few more things with you later, it's interesting how many non-Germans did not know about this tradition, while our lovely Astrid did not know it was German-only :-)&nbsp;</p> <p>Speaking of that, my new neighbour,&nbsp;a Spanish lady who moved here a few weeks ago with her family&nbsp;and whose son started different school on the same day - knew nothing of the tradition. She was so grateful I pointed out the school cone tradition to her so her boy did not feel left out on the day on his ceremony.</p> </p> <p>My son's was certainly distinctive and cheerful. Apart from those in the shops, I only ever saw one school cone IRL, so it was quite a challenge to design and make ours, but I wanted to make it and it was actually quite cathartic process for me personally. And the start of school - after turbulent couple of years before and after our move - was a sort of climax. When those cones have grown large enough it is time for the child to go to school. My sister is a principal at an elementary school, and the new year was beginning whilst I visited a few weeks back. It is quite like you described. Did your son's entry class have their class photo published in the local newspaper.? Your son is super cute. &nbsp;My baby, my second child, started school last year as well, also at only 4 because his birthday is late in the year. &nbsp;I also had mixed feelings -- joy but also&nbsp;melancholy, you know? &nbsp;And apprehension because he seemed so <i>young</i>. &nbsp;(He managed just fine. &nbsp;Loves school. &nbsp;Is super social). &nbsp;I'd been waiting all these years to have some measure of freedom, but it comes at a price. &nbsp;It means that part of your life, with its frustrations but also its delights, is over.</p> <p>In Canada, though, there's a lot less fanfare! </p>
