I wouldn't spray anything on the bag but clean it with a soft damp tissue after each use to ensure there is no colour transfer. It only takes a few secs, I do this on my white handbag and it's in great condition

In my experience, color transfer from denim to leather is a more likely problem with very dark denim and light suede. Smoother leathers seem to resist staining more. And denim that is a bit faded doesn’t seem to bleed color so badly.

If you want to test a protectant, I’d try a section on the underside or unobtrusive part of the bag, just to be sure the spray doesn’t affect the color. I’ve not had any issues with protectant sprays discoloring or changing the texture of my bags, but granted, I do not carry a lot of light bags. Good luck!

I would not spray it..if/when it gets dirty use some leather cleaner to clean it….I own 2 white/cream leather bags, one 10+ years old, one 2 years old, I own/wear a ton of denim and I’ve never had denim color transfer on either one…i don’t know, maybe I’ve just been lucky or maybe my leather bags are pretty resilient.

My advice, bags are meant to be used, just use it and don’t overthink it

I have a hand made white leather Italian bag. It is a very stiff leather. I never sprayed it and it has not deteriorated in any way. I have had it for many years.

Thanks @firecracker @Jaime - I rang a second shop and they said that they don’t want anything to ruin the finish of the handmade leather so that’s why they don’t recommend spraying it. They said to just wipe it gently if it gets dirty!! Clearly don’t understand the very real denim colour transfer issue. Sigh. Do any other luxury bag owners have ideas? I’m guessing it’d be the same principle across all the brands right? Thanks so much for replying!

Gosh, that's a conundrum. I might call the shops back and ask what they recommend to protect it, especially from denim dye transfer. I had a taupe leather bag (by Hobo, not super expensive, but it was nice leather) that got discolored after some time from carrying it with jeans.

I wonder why they don't want you to spray it. If you have a shoe repair person you trust I would consider taking it in for advice.

Hi lovely YLF community! I have been given a beautiful luxury handbag (Max Mara) in a beige colour tone. When I rang the shop it was gifted from, they strongly advised me not to spray it with anything at all. I even called a second shop who had the same advice. But I’m terrified of colour/denim transfer and other marks and stains so what should I do?! It was very expensive (for me) so I don’t want the stress of not having it protected preclude me from using it!
Thanks heaps in advance!
