Wow Deborah!! I’m so impressed. I would have ruined that jacket. I’m so glad it worked out for you. Yeah, leather, we do have a really good repair shop but they are super pricey. Worth it though. With pockets I think the proportions would not have worked. Better money lost, lesson learned.

Oh yes I hear you on this. I have just experienced something similar with a ‘cropped denim jacket’. Denim in it self is a struggle for me but I really wanted one denim jacket to go with some dressy pieces. Finally I took the scissors to it and now it’s the perfect length, nips in at the waist and creates the right proportions for short waisted me. Obviously taking the scissors to a leather jacket would be a whole other thing but it works a treat with denim... I’m now rocking a more deconstructed look which works so much better. Glad you found your jacket... it’s fabulous!

Sharan - Sounds like both of us need to keep looking for the "cropped" or "shrunken" look to make jackets proportional. I can wear long toppers no problem, even most blazers hit me fine, but certain jackets just look frumpy on me and, like you, I'm thinking it's all about the proportions. The Iro Shivani swacket looks awful on me, despite the fact that it's beautiful, now I can finally part with it, because no amount of styling is going to change the proportions. Sad!!!
Suz - You obviously did an amazing job with the photos!! Knowing your sweet spots just makes everything so much easier. Funny it's the mid length for me. But I do have long arms and legs so that may be why that works easier for me.
suntiger - it's such a process!!! One piece at a time and can be so frustrating. I hope you find what works for you very soon!!

Great new moto! I can definitely relate and think one of the reasons I haven't been happy with my outfits has been proportion. Well the pants outfits at least.

OOooh! I love a happy ending!!

I know the longer looser jackets (denim as well as leather) have been trendier for the past few years, but I have resisted that trend and have stuck with my cropped versions, because I, too, am 5'3" (or 4, if I am stretching, LOL) and while long in the rise, am short waisted. The longer looser jackets tend to swamp me.

I LOVE the look of the new Elora -- gorgeous, and of course not as cropped on someone of our height as on the model, but still just short enough to make the proportion work.

When I first joined YLF I went through a phase of photographing outfits precisely to figure out proportions and measured all my jackets to see which ones worked best on me. It was enlightening, for sure. And I did learn that when an outfit feels "off" it's often about the relative lengths and their relationship to my body.

Very enlightening! I'm glad you found the perfect moto, too. I think your analysis gets at the reason I don't have bomber jackets in my wardrobe (thinking of Angie's blog post yesterday), despite my attraction to the style. They usually don't hit at the right spot to work for me. I'm a little on the short-waisted side, but not actually a petite.

Yes, it makes so much sense! Happy you sorted all out! (my problem would have been exactly the reverse of yours, so I have a long torso, and always need +2" to the regular body/waist lengths....which is also very rare to find).

Zaeobi - it’s funny the rise was the first thing I figured. My sweetest spot is 9.5”. Depending on the contouring it’s mid to high rise. I can wear a 10” sometimes and only in VB can I get away with an 11”. On my I’m always going for the long torso. Certain brands like Paige and coh are particularly good for me. I think I usually just eye jackets but I’m prone to keeping close but not quite and that hasn’t been a good thing. Yeah tailoring. I have the VB Gemini lace pants now too big and I’m afraid a tailor will ruin them. Oy!!! Tough choices!! So sorry your jacket was not perfect. It’s such a roll of the dice and very disappointing when things don’t work out as expected.
Joy - It’s such a process!!! But you have an incredible. Your outfits are always elegant, polished, and interesting!! I think you could make a paper bag work. That’s an art!!

Sal, I only really realized the problem with wearing dropped shoulders at age 75! At about 51 I realized that full skirts were a problem on me. And long midi lengths. It is a journey.

@Gryffin The custom jacket sadly didn't end up being perfect, so I understand your hesitation around commissioning items from scratch, don't worry! Good point about the leather jacket though - I guess the welted hem *does* make it more of a bomber shape... ?

Don't worry, you'll get there eventually - I've only *just* figured out that 12-12.5" is my ideal rise length (high-waisted without swallowing my ribcage), so we're all learning!

Sal - interesting I used to love dropped shoulders and dolman sleeves but since I am always wearing a blazer or jacket I kind of gave them up. Sometimes I think it's just too many details and unless you have a natural or very trained eye, it can be all too easy to talk ourselves (ok just speaking for me!!) into the almost perfect. I know it's not right if I still want to be on the hunt. Always a bad sign...

Interesting thread! And it sounds like you now have the leather jacket.

I too have realised proportions and shapes that do and don’t work. I only realised at age 51 that dropped shoulders are awful on me.

Jaime - I think it’s, at least for me, what the supporting act it. Dresses usually look best w a cropped jacket. But the shorter the hemline the longer the jacket length. Because I favor skinny jeans I usually prefer a longer jacket but with a trouser I like a shorter jacket. But I could never have just one length jacket without limiting my silhouettes. But I really need to pay a lot more attention to the proportions to really make sure they work. Lesson hopefully learned!!!!

Very enlightening! We are the same height but I am fairly evenly proportioned and don't generally wear petites or like petite fit. But have realized - ever so slowly - how important jacket length is and the benefits of cropped jackets.

Not surprising to me! I have different proportion issues, but as someone with all my height in my legs and a short curvy torso, I find that a difference of an inch or two in a jacket hemline can make a huge difference. Glad your found your perfect jacket!

Indigoprint- sing it sister. It’s so hard to find everything on the wish list abd when you do find it how can it still not be perfect?!! Whah….!! But then you find the magic piece and yeah, the earth moves, the angels weep…. It’s incredible. I need to cultivate more patience and if I need to talk myself into it’s rightness it’s wrong. I’m so happy you found your slouch jacket!! Wonderful! Enjoy it!!
Unfrimped - I so agree. Nothing works for everything. I vacillate long or short but both are needed for different pieces. I’m a bootie girl but sometime you need refined and sometimes chunky, higher or lower vamp. I love the idea “there can be only one” but it still doesn’t work all the time. I’m happy with my workhorses, works with most..
Bijou - you have such a discerning eye. You were actually the inspiration for trying cropped. Your jackets always hit just right, fit just right over dressy pieces. So I kept trying to figure out proportions. You are a good part of the reason I got this one right! Thank you stylish girl!!!

Oh, Gryffin. YES! The right LENGTH of items is soooooo important. I am absolutely pedantic about it. Lengths are my thing ;)

Sooooo, it makes perfect sense that you need a petite moto in TORSO LENGTH, but your long limbs require otherwise. A cropped moto sounds perfect, and I'm glad you found it :)

To your first question, the answer is Yes! YLF has been so good for me to really take the time to analyse why two items, that are seemingly similar, can end up with one a complete workhorse and the other barely worn. Proportion has a massive amount to do with it. Most clothing that requires heels to look good are worn far less frequently than clothing that works with flats and stompy boots.

I get it!
It’s one reason I have to be careful about “ trends” and certainly any “ lists”.
One change in proportions and suddenly you need more stuff to make it work. But even “ classics” have to have the right tweaks- length is one.
A good try- on with any intended target pieces & outfits is essential.
I’m not trend- averse per se and also am comfortable understanding which ones work for me - mostly I think I’m in the zone of being ready to occasionally update a winning silhouette so there’s a bit of freshness in wardrobe.
But I’m a sucker for things like beautiful colors, fabrics, good sale on higher- end garments, and may fail to listen to my gut.
I think I’m also a proportions snob for my own outfits and so end up feeling like, this outfit works with these shoes but not those, this jacket is too long with these pants, whatever. I don’t seem to be able to have that breezy approach that you see in fashion blogs and capsule wardrobes of , here is my jacket that goes with everything in my closet. so keep trying to figure out the occasional holy grail items that work well across several silhouettes or other types of what I call “ reliable versatility “.

I think it could be because when we find the style/color/size/hardware color that is right, proportion seems like it should be automatically right.
I had never been drawn to moto jackets because they hit right at my waist, and I do not typically draw attention to my waist. But I found a slouchy, longer length one that hits at my hips, and I wonder what I wore before I got it!
As Lana said I am seeing cropped pieces show up a lot lately (they go well with high waists) So you may be able to find many things to your proportional liking.

Lana - yes!!! Let’s stock up on the best cropped styles ever!! I bought the Iro shivani boucle swacket years ago. Looks so wonderful on everyone else. That is also too long!!! At least I can finally let things go because I understand why they will never work to my eye. Off for a long torso to treasure!!!

Nemosmom- yes we are built the opposite but same problem. So I think it’s easier to focus on the proportion to pieces, to the actual fit but then the third part is does it hit us at the seer spots. How difficult is that?!!! But I now understand more about my epic flails. Laughing. Ultra High rise jeans would make me look like Urkel!! One size does not fit all!!
Rachy - I think there’s also a kibbe element. I’m all Yang, straight lines. And the madewell jacket had such soft fabric, creating less structure that it was very yin and the wrong proportions. But why did it take 62 years to figure this out? I guess better late than never….
Zaeobi - well congrats on your custom jacket!! I’ve always been afraid to try that because I’ve had some bad experiences with tailors. That’s awesome on the bomber. Sounds like you are more petite in the torso than I am but have such a better command of the fix. Kudos!! GL on the hunt!!
Stag - IKR so many details…. Yes skirt and dress length, pants hem, the 1/3 to 2/3 rule. But I think this gave me a flash of why so called “perfect pieces” fail. Also the danger of ignoring your gut. The Dalby has incredible reviews and really looks good in photos. I talked myself into it with my head but my heart never bought it. The Elora-we. Come to me precious. Basically we all just know. I need to listen to my inner voice and get rid of stuff that works only in theory.
Brooklyn - Oy!!!! When you change a template of proportion you have to add a whole capsule to make that work!!! Big job!! But you have the best eye. Your pieces always hit most flattering points. I stand in awe!!!!
Jenni - agreed. Being proportioned like a “regular” but having the real estate of a petite is a slippery slope. But I’m hoping I will be smarter going forward if I pay more attention to this.
