@Sally that makes sense - yeah, it reminds me of something my uncle would wear lol, so perhaps not the look for me but I'm not averse to it.

Looks like it would work for others without the desi cultural connotations, though!

I see this quite a lot as I live in an Indian/ Pakistani suburb and a lot of men dress like this around. I don’t think I would wear it myself but I don’t mind it.

It seems most folk feel positively about these proportions. I can see the practicality behind them for sure (especially for a layered look)!

@RobinF
Good point - now that it's been trending, I've been thinking a more maxi coat would solve that issue. But maybe I need to think the other way too! Only thing I'm worried about is the lighter material of the shirt dress (as @suntiger mentioned) flying about - like a less risqué Marilyn moment haha! Though @olive makes a good point about it tempering the volume a bit anyway.

@bonnie
Agreed - it might work well on a static mannequin but I'd need to check all angles in the mirror first.

@unfrumped
I look like I just rolled out of bed in such looks too, don't worry - I usually have to add some jewellery or clip up my hair (or something!)

@Inge
I'm sure they've seen much more on the shop floor than they ever bargained for, the poor things!
Yes, a CoC could work to dress it up a little. But I think part of what makes the Japanese streetwear iteration of this work (Muji is Japanese, after all) is the mix of inherently more casual fabrics & silhouettes mixed together - the sort of thing I usually see here is like a slub grey t-shirt worn with an open chambray shirt, then a plaid shirt tied at the waist, with an olive puffer over the top & maybe a hoodie layered underneath (I guess there's some Japanese influence on the HK scene too). But the version you saw sounds slightly more refined - that's the sort of middle ground I'd go for.

@runcarla
Good point - that might have been why I was subconsciously not drawn to the look for myself (the more masculine connotation (in my culture) of the 'Nehru jacket over kurta' look). Though it's usually dressier too.

@SF
Sorry, the brain fog is real - for some reason I read what you wrote as 'blue shirt' at first! I see what you mean now - yes, just the tails/ hem sticking out reminds me of that slightly 'dishevelled preppy' look that was popular in the 90s & 00s (deliberately sticking your shirttails & cuffs out from underneath a long sleeved jumper, anyone?)

@Jules @sloper
Yes, I'd prefer a more cropped jacket on my frame instead - but stopped myself from buying a khaki one I saw (from Zara) for exactly the practical reasons @Jules mentioned. Though @Angie has a good point that it could be perfect for my climate - yesterday was still 27C (even in 'winter') lol!

@kkards @suz @Jonesy
Do you mean people would wear this sort of look under a bigger coat (e.g. whilst commuting) then peel off the outermost layer once they're inside (e.g. the office)? I can see it being practical that way - especially if you just wanted to nip outside for a coffee run/ break in between, without having to get all 'suited & booted' up again.

@rachylou
Does that mean you wouldn't try it again? Never say never!

I like it fine but I think I would actually prefer something more cropped and boxier! Hip length over long feels a bit middling to me rather than trendy statement. However in real life I think cropped boxy puffer styles don’t actually provide much warmth due to cold air getting up underneath, so it becomes form vs function, and how did we get here with puffers of all things? Lol!

(I was looking at an ll bean cropped, wide, open cowl neck styled puffer to go with my new proportioned outfits but saw a review saying it was $300 worth of uselessness due to it not keeping cold air out at all…)

I once saw a Japanese couple rocking this look: navy relaxed fit ankle-length pants, navy crew neck sweaters over a crisp white shirt, black combat-style boots, tailored navy trench coats (knee-length) and short navy puffer vests. They looked soooo good!

I like some of those combinations but think it’s likely trickier IRL to have items that work together just right, or fir me to be less picky about which ones work together, as there are since people who can just throw these things together and look great. Then one might have just a one- outfit look.
Also like many outfits, I wonder if some of these have “ best views” and don’t look as good in back or elsewhere.
But , I’m all for trying out different combinations especially SYC to get something fun or interesting. If it’s things I already have, then even if I come up with one new combination I like, that’s a win, for fun and feeling creative.

I agree with Helena, this looks intentional and that makes a huge difference. I'm quite surprised by how much I like it actually. I hate on me when my coat doesn't cover my longer sweaters. Maybe the coat needs to go shorter rather than longer :)

It looks good to me ... I think the extra long length of the shirt makes it look intentional vs just the vest falling short. I think the tonal look helps too ... If it was highly contrasting I think it would be less forgiving visually?

Just saw this Puffer Family in Muji on my way home. What do we think of the lady's short puffer vest over a longer shirt dress?

I'm used to seeing shirt dresses over (flared & cropped) trousers out here but the puffy on top is a new proportion to my eye.

Will be interesting to see everyone else's thoughts - would you try this yourself?
