In the original set of pics, I think that top would work fine untucked if you either added a wedge heel for a bit more height OR you hemmed the top about an inch or two - to hit somewhere at the hip bone. I'd have to see to compare but I'm guessing low hip bone would work with a looser top, high hip bone for a more body con top.

The striped tank works well with the clams because it's a "skirt length" top - hitting at high hip bone.

LOVE the red tunic + white clams. So cute! Red is totally your color.

Also for the record my proportions are pretty average overall, but even I have struggle with the long top + clams with flat heels. I normally have to size up in tops to fit my chest, meaning that even if the top is petite, it'll be just a tad on the too-long size. Usually adding a bit of a heel is all I need, or semi-tucking like you did in #3 -- but I find semi-tucking works even better with a slightly lower rise for some reason.

Your're right - those trousers are hard to find. I saw a picture of a pair I wore in the early 90's recently that had a sort of cumberbund waistline, and I wore quite a bit.
Thanks for the thoughts on proportions Eva - having someone like you with some similarities, who has really thought this over, is very helpful!!

For me, tucking into trousers works best when the trousers hit my actual waist. I've got such a long rise that I rarely come across trousers that manage that! If I'm going to tuck into a medium rise (on me, like the clams are for you), I have to keep the top more in the tailored/body con territory for it to work, and even better if I wear a jacket open over top, which somehow mitigates the rise emphasis from the tucking. Another option might be to wear the top untucked, but belt it at your natural waist.

L'Abeille mentioned the 3:2 proportions which is the ratio I use as the 1:2 ratio does not suit at all. My three parts are usually on the bottom and the two parts on the top but I have a few skirt and top ensembles where the ratios are reversed and they too look flattering. Perhaps the 1:2 ratio is not the most flattering for you and you may like the 2:3 ratio better.

While I was trying to perfect my proportions I found my tape measure invaluable as some of my tops looked "off" simply because they were an inch too short for my skirt lengths. Best wishes for your quest.

Late commenting here but I might have some insight onto why your original outfit take 2, fully tucked, didn't look right. From a fellow long-torso person. That tucked version draws attention to the length of your torso--because you can see how much space there is above the waist (in a short or average person, that much blouse above the tuck usually goes with a low-waisted bottom). Yet your bottoms look like they are full-waisted ie have a high rise. The same proportions might look less intense if the top had a lower (V?) neckline or a smaller/no print, to de-emphasize the bodice half.

With tucking into a skirt you get a totally different effect; because you can't see where the torso ends and the legs begin, the impression it gives is of longer legs.

I think what Rachy says, aiming for a 2/3-1/3 proportion (or a 3/5-2/5) between top and bottom, in either direction, is most classically pleasing to the eye. You get that with your untucked tops over capris, and can try tweaking with semitucks or rolling hems to see what your eye tells you looks best.

The clam digger outfits are super cute in my book, 'specially the first with the horizontal lines. The second one is good because I think it makes use of the thirds principle - you're 2/3s red, 1/3 white. There's something pleasing about visual thirds.

#3 is the best proportion wise. #2 - I think the tucking + belt, belts having a constrictive nature, is arguing with the relaxed natures of your top and bottom. The top is great, btw. I totally think you rock the daisies.

#1 isn't bad proportion-wise with the capri-length jeans.

I think the semi tucked is my favorite, proportions wise. This looks great for a casual outing.

If we're going to get picky though, I might prefer a different shoe. I find flat Mary Janes difficult because of the horizontal strap which is a little leg shortening. So it's not the pants or top so much as the shoes here. Do you have any nude sandals or shoes with something like a 1.5 inch heel? Or a ballet flat if you're going with a true flat.

My preference is for the untucked version, because loose over fitted seems more flattering to me. I also think there might be something about why you wear the looser crops more; perhaps a looser bottom is easier to wear generally speaking?
I wear just-above-the-knee shorts in summer with long tunic tops over them. Most of the tops cover the crotch area, which is my preference for this look on me.

Anne, I think it was you who helped me understand this issue when I first joined YLF. I was commenting that I found clams rather leg shortening or somehow unflattering on myself and I didn't understand this, because I find skirts at that length quite flattering, even with flats.

And you explained that unlike a skirt, the clams show the rise....so the illusion of long legs is somewhat broken by that. I think you were really onto something with that comment. But I also think the cut of the clams makes a difference. Slim and tapered is good, but maybe not "skinny" slim, if you know what I mean. Maybe more like a cigarette pant style. I'm not sure.

In any case, I think you chose the right way to wear that outfit; it looks great with the semi-tuck!

In general, if I wear clams, I like to wear them with a wedge sandal. It just makes the proportions easier for me. Otherwise I roll to the top of my knee and on me that seems an easier length. Everybody's sweet spot is a bit different, I suspect.

I've heard that a long top can shorten the legs but I think you can compromise. This is a casual, at ease look and untucked top seems appropriate. Waist definition helps lengthen the legs and the top looks a little shaped at your waistline. I like the first version best.

I think you chose the right one of the three. I agree tucked is not right.

I also wear knee length shirts, pedal pushers, capris - never sure of the name. It is hard to get the right top. I now either wear matching as in a black tank with a black pair of shorts, or I wear almost a long tunic with mine.

I think it will be because the top and shorts are similar and it is more flattering to have 1/3 to 2/3 proportions.

I have trying to pay more attention to my vertical proportions recently, as I try to deal with having such a long torso and short legs.

Here are three variations I tried out the other week

1. Top untucked

2. Top tucked - should have been my best look proportion wise but I thought it looked awful - can you help me work out why?

3. Semi-tuck - what I went with, thought I don't think it look great either.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Number 4 is a bonus picture of where we went - to see these Giant marionettes - it was a HUGE event for my city.
