My observation from playing with this proportion so far is that the top and topper need to be different enough in length to look intentional. (When I try a combination that doesn't work, it's often bc the top is not longer enough, so it just looks like it's kind of sticking out below the cardi iykwim.) I think your combo here works -- it's just different enough. Somehow the cropped sleeves and cutaway/bolero cut of the cardi also help.
