Hi Laura

I'm really so to hear about your friend. To me, it looks like your outfit is entirely appropriate.

I'm not sure about other countries, but in Australia, people do not always wear black to a funeral - I'd say about 50% do, the other 50% would wear a conservative outfit in generally darker, neutral colours.

In fact, I actually wore white and navy to my own mum's funeral. (She had loved visiting Asia and I felt comfortable that in Asian countries where white is the colour of mourning. I also felt incredibly uncomfortable at the thought of wearing black for some reason and felt that this was a good compromise.)

I'm not sure if this would be taboo in another country or not (I'd be interested to know). I guess I'm just saying that if the black dress doesn't work out, you could always consider wearing a darker neutral outfit (ie, navy, dark grey etc) and it is more than likely that it would be equally appropriate. (Well, at least here and the funerals I have attended, it would be.)

One last thing to consider--if you know you're going to be going to the gravesite, wedges and flats are more grass-friendly than pumps.

I think that the first dress looks perfectly fine (unless it's satin or something and too shiny, as greenglove said). I think it would work well with nude pumps. I think that the second dress would be too casual. And although I understand about the heat, you can never go wrong in a suit.

I think the black dress is appropriate, so long as it's not too low-cut in the front. Generally, business-casual clothing (skirt, trousers, dress) in subdued colors (black, brown, gray, navy, dark green or deep purple perhaps) is a safe bet. In the summertime, I've also worn a black cotton sweater and tan pinstripe pants. Keep the shoes sedate as well (read: perhaps not the 4.5" platform peep toes) and no one will notice what you're wearing--definitely the goal.

I'm not experienced in dressing for funerals, but I'd say the first dress would be a good option and I agree that the second is a bit casual.

I have this dress in black... do you all think it would be appropriate?
