Thanks so much everyone. Apologies if I don't respond to each of you.

I do love the teal blazer, even though it is a size or two too large, I can't seem to get rid of it. But I probably really should shorten the sleeve as Ornella and lyn67 suggest.

Sunee, thanks for taking the time to make suggestions. Truthfully, I don't worry all that much about traditional figure flattery. For me, the mix of textures up top was worth looking a bit top heavy - after all I am top heavy, and I'm fine with that (most days anyway).

Dee, glad I'm not the only sex/gender pedant. It particularly drives me crazy when used about animals - no, your dog is NOT gendered!

Catnip, the pin something I bought ages ago for $1 at a junk shop b/c I thought it was pretty. It lives on that blazer, and I actually didn't even take it into consideration as an accessory. I am particular to circle pins and wouldn't mind finding another ...

JAileen, Ha, I totally cracked up at the Donald Sutherland in Animal House bit.

I loved Suz's description of "richand a little bit androgynous and a little bit romantic," and BethAnn's of "a Don at Cambridge in the 1930's" and E's of a dandy.

I have long been attracted to androgynous looks but always figured I wouldn't be able to pull it off due to the boobs of wrath. When I cut my hair into a supershort pixie, I actually looked more feminine, which was a surprise. I might have another danydish look for you today though ...

Why do I love this on you though it shouldn't really work on your body type apparently?!! You look like a cool professor! Love the mix of colors and the tall boots with the jacket!

This has to be my fav look of yours! Mainly because its less boho and I am biased to that!

I *love* this on you! Seriously! I think this is the most fitted I've seen your clothes, and you look great. No buddha belly in sight. The textures & colours & details all work together beautifully, and I don't see any top heaviness.

It's got a bit of a dandy feel to it too, which I just love. It does look intellectual, I suppose, but that's a good thing in my book! I still think you look cute & casual, just in a more polished way. To my eye, the outfit reads a bit more timeless/past era than trendy though.

Great idea and some great stuff here. What I wonder about are the sleeve lengths, the jacket seems too long, which makes it look overwhelming to my eye. But it's a great jacket in lovely fabric and colour, with beautiful lining, so maybe you might consider an alteration to shorten the sleeves and the shoulder line to make it a better fit.

With the jacket off you might try scrunching the sleeves and show off some skin as in the inspiration outfit. I find that the very trick instantly lifts many outfits.

Finally, I'd add the belt for the semi tuck. Ever since Angie drew my attention to it I've been feeling that the pants with belt loops are meant to have belts through them, otherwise it feels a bit unfinished. However, I am firmly on Team Polish which explains this preference, so take this with a pinch of salt.

I can see how jacket plus button front collared shirt under v neck sweater would read to people as very traditionally professorial. (Am I the only one whose professors dressed like slobs?) it's the addition of the jacket, in comparison to the inspiration picture, that does it, as well as the more traditional fit rather than the oversized sweater in the pic.

I really like it and the colors, in any case.

I love the color of this jacket, and the outfit looks like it works quite well to me! The link you posted is a little slouchier in terms of the sweater, which I think dresses it down a bit compared to your take. That said, there's nothing wrong with looking a little more put together than you intended, right? You're making a good impression for grad students everywhere.

Of course you look Professorial! This has a little retro-professor look, like a lovely feminine Don at Cambridge in the 1930's (there's some gender bending and time travel for ya). I love it to pieces. It's more minimal than your typical look, but the layering, earrings, and velvet add a bit of luxe, which is terrific on you.

I don't see an issue with lighter tones on top at all. The structure of the jacket and the softenss in the sweater are perfect -- I think the boots and dark jeans balance it beautifully.

I love accessories too, and will never be accused of minimalism. I am learning that I enjoy editing these elements, so each item gets a real chance to be noticed. The simple pin and oh-so-you earrings add interest and draw me in to your face. Perfect!

As a stylist, I'm always wary of giving blanket advice like the look you copied. The reason is that it doesn't always work for multiple body types. In your case, you added multiple layers AND heavy fabrics to essentially the wrong half of your frame. Looking at the original outfit, it streamlines the legs with dark monochromatic colours in the boots and pants making them look thinner. The look highlights the top half of the body with lighter colours and heavier fabrics. You will want to do the exact opposite in order to achieve more balance for your frame.
Hope that helps!

I copied this outfit, thinking I would look cute, casual, and trendy, like she does. Instead, I look a like professor (which is not a bad thing, mind you, I'm just perplexed that my take came off so different than hers). I thought the addition of the groovy teal velvet blazer with the funky paisley lining would take me into casual boho territory, and maybe it did, but it was casual boho professor territory. I ran errands this morning and then attended a seminar this evening and had people asking me all day where and what I teach. (Of course in the evening that might have had something to do with me explaining to the seminar leader that no you can't tell gender from a skull, although often you can tell sex.)

Also stop the presses, I semi-tucked. And wore it that way, at least for my morning errands when I had the blazer on. I untucked once the blazer came off; my buddah belly doesn't appreciate that much atention. Also, stop the presses again, I didn't wear a scarf or a necklace! Just these dangly enamel earrings that I got a good 20 years ago at the Smithsonian.

Thanks for looking, comments and suggestions welcome!
