Reporting back as promised after consult with hair stylist this morning. We both agreed I prob. need some long layers cut into my hair and the ends trimmed a bit (less the 1/2 inch) along with a product that is sort of a cross between dry shampoo, volumizer and hair spray. Sched. appt. later this afternoon (happy she had appt. today) for the new trim/cut. Fingers crossed it is flattering...I finally realized that all one length was not flattering with a round face.

Side note I followed the video AviaMaria linked to yesterday and it def. did add volume and height so once the layers are cut in, will try it again and see how it turns out.

Again, my sincere thanks for your helpful replies.

Big thanks to all of you, its so nice to have such a supportive group to consult with. I have been very shy about posting pictures or outfits (keep hoping to lose weight before I do so) but maybe I will take a step of courage soon and post. I have been following the forum and blog for several years and feel like I know so many of you.

Lots of great ideas to try above. What helps me with root lift is to clip the hair on my crown when it is wet. I either let it air dry that way or else blow dry until maybe 75% dry, and then I take out the clips and finish blow drying. The link is for curly/wavy hair, but I think it would work for straight hair too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFLCD12RKbw.

Hi Rachylou...I watched the video from the Small Things Blog and realized I had not been using the amount of product she recommends...I got the Aquage Uplifting Foam (she uses) and am going to try her method in the morning...will report back. I stopped drying my hair upside down because I thought we were supposed to dry hair in one direction only ...down ... to prevent frizz... but she bends over and drys it. i will let you know how the consult goes tomorrow morning.

My hair is thick and heavy, so she thins it toward the bottom but doesn't layer - she uses those weird zig-zag scissors or a razor. I do a lot of scrunching the top with my fingers. After a few hours you can wet fingers and use to "refresh" the product. I don't blow dry my hair unless desperate, but that does work as well.

I have thick but very fine hair. I've had it layered for years but recently grew out the layers and have a lob. I found this product via the Small Things Blog years ago and have sworn by it ever since. I like a lot of volume in my roots. I'll link to the product on Amazon and also a tutorial showing how much to use.
https://www.amazon.com/Aquage-.....B000RUKR0Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=923Kaxm2v2Q

If your hair is thick and heavy it might be the weight of the hair pulling it down, and if in addition it is fine, then it may not "hold" product all that well. Good luck figuring out the cause and solution!

Thank you to all that replied. I do use a blow dryer/round brush and have tried several brands of dry shampoo on roots. I find though after a few hours it just sort of flops and looks flat which isn't a good look for my ROUND face. Maybe its the weight of my hair pulling it down? I think I will try some diff. products first (meeting with my hair dresser in morning for a consult) and if that doesn't work, may try a few layers in front on top...if she thinks it will fit in with rest of my cut, facial features, etc.

I use a round brush and blow dryer to add lift. I think you'll have to experiment with some different techniques and product to find the right combination that works for your hair.

My hair is a similar length. I use a spray product from my stylist that goes on wet or dry hair and flip the hair forward to dry it upside down. If it needs more, I use a flat iron near the roots on the dry hair...something my stylist does occasionally.

I think it would depend on a number of things. There are some products that are made to lift the roots up called root lift. I don't know how well they work but when I watch YouTube videos they seem to use them. Some people use hairspray just at the roots and back comb a bit.
If your hair is fine then that is how your hair is. Too much product might weigh it down but it might help. You would have to experiment.

No, I don't think mousse would be what your after. Too heavy and wet. I will venture into back combing and hair spray from time to time and blow drying with a round brush, lifting the hair at the crown up and aiming at the roots... Oh, and maybe a little dry shampoo at the top...

Do you style with a blow dryer? My stylist taught me a few things: hit with some product and blow dry my hair upside down, concentrating on just the roots. Then after the roots are dry and cooled, flip the hair back over and finish styling the rest. Works every time. I have long layers by the way.

I have a similar cut and use product. Depending on the texture and direction your hair grows, you can also chop in some shorter layers to push the longer heavier part up, but that can also alter the rest of the cut. Just a little dry wax underneath does it for me. I like my hair a little messy anyway.

I have a shoulder length cut that is between a bob and a lob...the front is just a tiny bit longer than the sides and back, side part and bangs swept to the side. When looking at a picture taken last night I realized just how "flat" my hair is on the top. I don't know if some layers are the answer or product? I have tried several different mouses but don't feel like I get enough of a lift, would that be because my hair is all one length? Thanks in advance for any feedback/suggestions.
